This was to be the first of many trips to the area, where he would often holiday for long periods of time. Whilst in the Lake District, he spent much of his time sketching the views which were to be seen from the various hills and mountains. He wrote, "For concentrated loveliness, I know nothing that can quite compare with the lakes and mountains of Westmorland, Cumberland and Lancashire." Holiday also spent a lot of time at the studios of Sir Edward Burne-Jones . The influence of Burne-Jones can be felt in Holiday's work – the artists working in Sir Edward's studios discussed, exchanged and pooled their ideas, thus causing similarities between them. He accepted the job of stained glass window designer for Powell's Glass Works in , after Burne-Jones left to work for During his time at Powell's , he fulfilled over 300 commissions, mostly for Americans . Media release - Thursday, 24 May 2007
Elevated on a plinth on Mrs Macquaries Road opposite the Royal Botanic Gardens is a bronze statue of Australian poet Henry Lawson. He is standing next to a swagman and his dog, characters from his stories. The statue has been there for 76 years, but that's about to change.
The Botanic Gardens Trust is loaning the statue to The National Gallery of Australia for a retrospective exhibition of the work of sculptor George Lambert.
For the next four months visitors will see a Maori bouncer on Henry's plinth. The contemporary sculpture by New Zealand artist Michael Parekowhai is a temporary replacement loaned by the Art Gallery of NSW with assistance from the City of Sydney. The modern fibreglass figure is a striking contrast to the Lambert bronze and is expected to attract many curious admirers.
International Conservation Services will send a crane for Henry at 9:00am on Tuesday 29 May. After a polish he'll be heading for Canberra. The bouncer will assume the role of minding Henry's plinth until mid September

'Henry Holiday'
Henry Holiday was born on 17th June 1839 in London. In 1855, aged 16, he made his first journey to the Lake District. Throughout the rest of his life he was to make many more trips, often holidaying for long periods of time. In 1908 he designed his own home, Betty Fold, near Hawkshead. He often stayed at Brantwood , home of John Ruskin , who introduced him to Edward Burne-Jones . From 1872 onwards, he was a regular visitor at Muncaster Castle
Henry Holiday was a frequent visitor to the studios of Sir Edward Burne-Jones at his home in London, and Burne-Jones' influence on him can be felt in his work. At Burne-Jones' home aesthetic problems were discussed and exchanged by a group of artists, who pooled their ideas, and whose work had much in common. He died on April 15th, 1927, two years after his wife Kate (who did embroidery work for the William Morris Company Walker Art Gallery - Liverpool One of the South windows at Rydal Church

Blind Man's Holiday by O. Henry
Alas for the man and for the artist with the shifting point of perspective! Life shall be a confusion of ways to the one; the landscape shall rise up and confound the other. Take the case of Lorison. At one time he appeared to himself to be the feeblest of fools; at another he conceived that he followed ideals so fine that the world was not yet ready to accept them. During one mood he cursed his folly; possessed by the other, he bore himself with a serene grandeur akin to greatness: in neither did he attain the perspective. Generations before, the name had been "Larsen." His race had bequeathed him its fine-strung, melancholy temperament, its saving balance of thrift and industry.

    The Rose Window
The Rose Window, displayed over the entrance of the present library building, was designed by Henry Holiday for Drew's first library, the Cornell (1883). Below: the Cornell Library, with the Rose Window on the back wall. The first photo was probably taken around the turn of the century; the second in the 1920s.
Photos courtesy of the Drew University Archives. The Cornell Library was razed in 1937 when the Rose Memorial Library was constructed on the site; the window was removed at that time and placed in storage for over forty years. No formal records were kept of its whereabouts. In 1978, when plans to add a Learning Center to the Rose Memorial Library were almost finished, the dismantled window was unexpectedly rediscovered in a crate in the attic of the Hall of Sciences. It was decided that the window should be restored to a place over the library's new entrance. Gordon Henderson, a stained glass craftsman, reconstructed the window with the help of his son Todd. Because there was no original copy of the design, it took six months to piece together the small stained glass parcels. Henderson's great grandfather had restored stained glass windows in the Graduate School Building named after Samuel W. Bowne, back when the University was still a seminary. "Rose" is the term used to describe a round cathedral or church stained glass window whose design emanates from the center, like the flower after which it is named. This rose window has a nine and a half foot diameter. A letter from Henry Holiday, dated April 20, 1888 (Drew University Archives), gives a fascinating explanation of its symbolism:

    17. Henry Holiday (1839-1927)
Notes on the Victorian painter and designer henry holiday.
    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/speel/paint/holiday.htm
    Henry Holiday (1839-1927)
The painter and designer Henry Holiday, perhaps best known today for his stained glass designs, studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1854, becoming friends with Rossetti Burne-Jones and Simeon Solomon at this time. He became chief designer at Powell and Sons, a stained glass maker, in 1863 (after Burne-Jones had left the previous year), and fulfilled more than 300 commissions, many for American clients. As a painter, he excelled in drapery, producing cold-faced figure subjects close in spirit to the work of Rossetti. He visited India in 1871, and in 1872 and much later in 1907 went to Egypt, painting a series of watercolours and illustrations on modern Indian and ancient Egyptian themes respectively. As well as stained glass, painting and illustration, he also produced some sculpture and carving, frescos, and also enamelwork. Illustration by Henry Holiday. His most important painting was Dante and Beatrice (1883) at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. There is good stained glass by him at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery , and in various churches, e.g. Notting Hill Church in Essex. Other examples are in American churches, for example the Church of St Thomas, Washington DC, and the Memorial to General Lee in St Pauls, Richmond Va.
