NIMMO, WILLIAM HOGARTH ROBERTSON (1885-1970), hydraulic engineer, was born on 10 February 1885 at Torquay, Devon, England, son of William Henry Nimmo, a Scottish-born civil engineer, and his Victorian-born wife Emma Margaret, n©e Robertson; his parents had left Australia on a world tour. Educated at Cumloden school, East St Kilda, and the University of Melbourne (B.C.E., 1908; M.C.E., 1924), young Nimmo gained experience as a draftsman and engineering surveyor in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. In 1913 he joined the Tasmanian Public Works Department. His work included the design of a concrete-arch dam and a reinforced-concrete bridge. Transferring to the Hydro-Electric Department in 1918, Nimmo studied the hydrology of the Great Lake and, as resident engineer, oversaw the building of the Liawenee diversion canal from the Ouse River to the lake. He also began a lifelong practice of using investigations at construction sites to solve theoretical design problems. The thesis he wrote for his M.C.E. drew on the experience he gained in Tasmania. In 1924 he moved to Brisbane as civil engineer to the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Board. At St Cuthbert's Presbyterian Church, Brighton, Melbourne, on 17 December that year he married Alice Emily Clark.

William Hogarth
William Hogarth was an English artist and engraver who depicted scenes from his time, sometimes realistically and sometimes using caricatures. Many of his engravings revealed his social concern; they depicted a money-loving society that preyed upon women, children, and people who were poor. Ironically Hogarth rejected Methodists. He seems to have shared the prejudice of many of his day. One his drawings , for example, attacked Methodists as "enthusiasts" full of "Credulity, Superstition and Fanaticism." Actually John Wesley opposed enthusiasm but because he emphasized religious experience, some branded him as an enthusiast never-the-less. Hogarth's engraving links enthusiasm with madness, sexual and religious excitement. One preacher in the drawing who may represent John Wesley preaches from a text "I Speak as a Fool" and terrorizes the congregation with puppets of a witch and a devil. John Wesley's book of sermons sits upon a book about witches. A man who appears to be George Whitefield watches the wild scene. His journal is shown in a basket sitting on top of a book on demonology. Another clergyman is shown in a sexual embrace of a woman. Methodists of Wesley's day encountered much prejudice from many quarters. Even worship gatherings were disrupted by shouting or, worse yet, violence, such as throwing stones. Hogarth's drawing reflects some of the feelings that may have been behind attacks on Methodists in England.

EXHIBITION REVIEW
WILLIAM HOGARTH 1697 - 1764
By Patricia Boccadoro PARIS, 6 December 2006 —The exhibition of the works of William Hogarth, the British painter, at the Louvre Museum is absolutely magnificent. It is also the first retrospective in France of this artist who was one of the major figures of the English Enlightenment. His paintings, witty and full of an earthy realism, are a social commentary on the morals of the time as well as being works of art in their own right. In his lifetime, he was never considered a "fashionable" painter with the stature of a Holbein
