Forum Articles Old Masters William Hogarth Biography - 1697-1764
William Hogarth was an English painter and printmaker who poignantly commented the English society of the eighteenth century with biting satire. The career and life of Hogarth were as unusual as his prints.
The Silversmith Apprentice
William was born as the son of a shopkeeper (his mother) and a schoolmaster and publisher. The youth of William was overshadowed by the chronic financial problems of his father, who was even imprisoned because of his debts. This humiliating experience formed Hogarth for the rest of his life. Hogarth started an apprenticeship as a silversmith in 1714, but never finished it. He then tried his luck as an independent engraver for copper plates. His early commissions were for cards, book illustrations and single prints. In 1720, he registered at the John Vanderbank Art Academy. Around 1726 or earlier, he was taught painting by James Thornhill whose daughter he later married. He earned some reputation for theater decoration paintings.

William Hogarth
William Hogarth is arguably the most inventive, creative, and influential visual artist of the eighteenth century. He was apprenticed to a goldsmith but began engraving in the 1720s. He attended St. Martin's Lane Academy in London. While himself not a particularly good draughtsman, he strongly supported the need for academic training in art and later promoted another academy in St. Martin's Lane which was the main forerunner of the Royal Academy. He began painting small groups and conversation pieces and by 1729, when he married the daughter of Sir James Thornhill, aroused serious interest among fellow artists. The Beggar's Opera (Tate Gallery) was perhaps the most successful of his early works and provided a transition from portraits to his best known works, the moralities. Hogarth said that he "commenced panter of small conversation pieces, from twelve to fifteen inches high. This having novelty, succeeded for a few years . . . I therefore turned my thoughts to a still more novel mode, viz . painting and engraving modern moral subjects, a field not broken up in any country or any age . . . I therefore wished to compose pictures on canvas, similar to representations on the stage; . . . I have endeavored to treat my subjects as a dramatic writer; my picture is my stage, and men and women are my players, who by means of certain actions and gestures, are to exhibit a

Executive summary: A Rake's Progress His first employment (i.e. after he set up for himself) "seems", says John Nichols, in his Anecdotes Raphael and Michelangelo for supporters. This worthy, Hogarth had doubtless not learned to despise less in the school of his rival Sir James Thornhill. Indeed almost the next of Hogarth's important prints was aimed at Kent alone, being that memorable burlesque of the unfortunate altarpiece designed by the latter for St. Clement Danes, which, in deference to the ridicule of the parishioners, Bishop Gibson took down in 1725. Hogarth's squib, which appeared subsequently, exhibits it as a very masterpiece of confusion and bad drawing. In 1726 he prepared twelve large engravings for Samuel Butler 's Hudibras . These he himself valued highly, and they are the best of his book illustrations. But he was far too individual to be the patient interpreter of other men's thoughts, and it is not in this direction that his successes are to be sought.

William Hogarth
William Hogarth was born in 1697 in Smithfields, London, the son of Latin teacher Richard Hogarth. The elder Hogarth later opened a coffee house, but the venture was a disaster, and he was jailed in Fleet Street prison when he was unable to pay his debts. William later apprenticed as a silverplate engraver to master engraver Ellis Gamble. When his apprenticeship period ended, Hogarth went into business for himself. It was at this period of his life that Hogarth met a man who was to prove an inspiration for his future career, artist Sir James Thornhill. Hogarth attended classes at Thornhill's free art academy in Covent Garden, became friends with the artist, and eventuially married his daughter, Jane.

Biographical Note
William Hogarth (1697-1764), the English painter, engraver, and satirist, was born in London. At sixteen, he was apprenticed to a silversmith, learning to engrave designs on gold and silver work. He set up his own business as an engraver in 1720. He developed a distinctive style as both a painter and an engraver, combining humor and history in a series of illustrations based on the works of Samuel Butler and on Shakespeare.

William Hogarth, Beating Hemp into Rope , from The Harlot's Progress
The Harlot's Progress
is a series of engravings telling the tale of a young woman who comes to London as a poor woman, suffers economic humiliation, becomes pregnant, falls into prostitution, and eventually dies of disease. In this engraving, Hogarth gives a portrait of a hemp factory and the labor conditions that women suffered under in seventeenth and eighteenth century pre-industrial Europe. Many industries hired mainly women; the factories were hot and dirty and the labor, as seen here, was difficult and back breaking. To the left of the main character is the shop steward who carries a whip to beat the women into working harder.
