WELCOME TO BILL'S CORNER!
December 2007 archive “It’s Been a Great Run” Fisheries Chief Bill Hogarth Bids Farewell to the National Marine Fisheries Service As Bill Hogarth winds down his last days in office as director of the National Marine Fisheries Service to become Interim Dean of Marine Sciences at the University of South Florida, he says he has no regrets about his 7-year tenure as the agency leader. Hogarth is well-known for advancing the National Marine Fisheries Service to become a more transparent, open, and accessible agency. He prioritized face-to-face meetings with stakeholders to improve relationships, and he had an open door policy with his staff. Hogarth is proud of accomplishments in other key areas of the fisheries world. For example, a three-year study of the pelagic longline fleet in the North Atlantic found that by modifying fishing techniques, gear and bait, fishermen could greatly reduce interactions with endangered sea turtles. This scientific discovery led Hogarth to reopen prime fishing grounds to the swordfish fleet, under tight restrictions that protect turtles. This new technology is now used by international fishing fleets throughout the world. On a recent conference call with the media, a reporter asked Hogarth his thoughts on the future of U.S. fisheries. He said the new law requiring an end to overfishing by 2010 will be tough on fishermen, but he has no doubts that this short-term sacrifice will lead to long-term prosperity for the oceans, American fishing fleets, individual fishermen, and coastal communities.

William Hogarth
Marriage a la Mode: The Tete a Tete
The National Gallery, London Witty, satirical, subversive and hugely talented, William Hogarth remains one of the most fascinating and innovative artists from the eighteenth century. This superb exhibition is the most comprehensive showing of the artist’s work in a generation and incorporates the full range of Hogarth’s work. The exhibition demonstrates that Hogarth wasn’t only a brilliant satirist as it showcases every aspect of his multi-faceted career: his remarkable paintings, ranging from elegant conversation pieces to salacious brothel scenes; his vibrant drawings and sketches; and the numerous engraved works for which he is most famous today, including Gin Lane and Beer Street . His society portraits easily rival those of Gainsborough or Reynolds, and the variety and energy of his output is outstanding. No other artist’s work has come to define a period of British history as powerfully and enduringly as Hogarth’s. The exhibition explores an artist who was strikingly modern in character, confronting subjects and themes – the city, sexuality, manners, social integration, crime, political corruption, charity and patriotism– that continue to preoccupy us today. The exhibition makes the case that Hogarth was in fact Britain’s first truly modern artist, and shows the relevance of his work to British art now. Works by living contemporary artists inspired by Hogarth are also on display, including Yinka Shonibare and Paula Rego.

Prints by William Hogarth. From The Original Works of William Hogarth. William Hogarth (1697-1764) is considered by many to be the greatest English caricaturist of all time. He was an perceptive observer and his illustrations of the social and political conduct of his day are fascinating historical documents and humorous depictions of human foibles, which have remained much the same over the last two centuries. Hogarth was a painter of considerable accomplishment, but it is for his remarkable prints, which he both composed and engraved, that he is best known. Biography:

After an apprenticeship to engraver, Ellis Gamble, William Hogarth began his own business in 1720. He took draughtsmanship lessons from Sir James Thornhill, although he had originally intended to pursue copper-plate engravings. In 1724, Hogarth began creating plates for booksellers. He then created individual prints before beginning a career as a portraitist in 1730. Several years after taking up painting, he began to create the satirical looks at society’s life and morals for which he is known.

'David Garrick as Richard III' 1741
William Hogarth (1697 - 1764)
Oil on canvas, 190.5 x 250.8cm
Accession Number WAG634
David Garrick (1717 - 1779) was the greatest British actor of the mid 18 th century. He became famous from 1743 after his outstanding performance as Shakespeare's Richard III. He is shown here in the famous tent scene before the Battle of Bosworth, haunted by the ghosts of all those he had murdered. Garrick's body is contorted into a 'serpentine' line - a stretched 'S' shape that Hogarth considered distinctly beautiful. He later made this shape the basis of his theoretical treatise 'The Analysis of Beauty' published in 1753. This first major Shakespearian picture is not just a portrait but also a grand history painting in which Hogarth emphasises England's importance. He believed that an incident from English rather than ancient history could be used to teach a moral lesson. Purchased with the help of the National Art Collections Fund.
