William Hogarth, the son of Richard Hogarth, a Latin teacher, was born in Smithfield, London , in 1697. Hogarth's father opened a coffee-house in London but the venture was unsuccessful and in 1707 he was confined to Fleet Prison for debt. Hogarth was released five years later during an amnesty.
When Hogarth was sixteen he was apprenticed to Ellis Gamble, a silverplate engraver. By 1720 Hogarth had own business engraving book plates and painting portraits. Around this time Hogarth met the artist, Sir James Thornhill. Impressed by his history paintings, Hogarth made regular visits to Thornhill's free art academy in Covent Garden.
The two men became close friends and Hogarth eventually married Thornhill's daughter, Jane.During the 1720s Hogarth worked for the printseller, Philip Overton. Hogarth also started to produce political satires. In 1726 Hogarth published The Punishments of Lemuel Gulliver , a satire on the prime minister, Robert Walpole.

Death Year : 1764 Country : US The paintings, crowded with a fascinating gallery of psychological and physical caricatures and portraits, illustrate (satirically) the same world depicted by such moralizing novelists and Henry Fielding and Samuel Richardson. The individual paintings are crammed with detail and allusions to each other so that the viewer has the sensation of reading a story without words but with familiar characters, objects, and settings. The works are as bright and lively as some of the works of Watteau and as evidently delighted with human nature as those of Frans Hals or Jan Steen. The moralizing, although clear, is never obtrusive or depressing, and these series are extremely important historical and social documents. Hogarth was not always as successful with his purely historical paintings and his sincere and powerful portraits in which, nevertheless, his keen understanding of human nature and his ability to paint both boldly and minutely are more than evident. William Hogarth, one of the greatest British artists of the 18th century, won fame principally for his moral and satirical engravings and, to a lesser extent, for his portraits and commentaries on art. Born in London on Nov. 10, 1697, Hogarth knew poverty and disgrace from an early age. His father's business failure led to the entire family's imprisonment for debt for five years. This face-to-face encounter with the sordid side of contemporary life, coupled with a Presbyterian belief that art should serve a moral purpose as well as an aesthetic one, lent Hogarth's mature work an uncommon combination of pungent realism and strong moralism.
After an apprenticeship to a silver-engraver, Hogarth received more conventional art training at private academies, including the one run by Sir James Thornhill, whose daughter he was to marry in 1729. He first became known in 1726 for his illustrations for the novel Hudibras , by Samuel Butler. Hogarth began painting about 1728, producing small group scenes such as

Back to Rococo Style William Hogarth was a British painter and engraver, noted particularly for his observation of English manners and customs and for his satirization of the excesses of his age. He was the dominant artistic personality in England in the first half of the 18th century and the painter who did most to establish a distinctive English school of painting. He was born in London on November 10, 1697, the son of an impoverished schoolteacher. At the age of 17 he became apprenticed to a silver-engraver but in 1720 he left to set up an engraving shop of his own. The business was concerned with producing engravings of book illustrations. Hogarth’s earliest notable works include illustrations (1726) to "Hudibras", a poem satirizing Puritanism, by Samuel Butler. In 1720 he had enrolled at the academy of art newly founded by John Vanderbank in St Martin’s Lane, where he learnt to paint in oils. In 1724 he studied at Sir James Thornhill’s free academy in St Martin’s Lane.

WILLIAM HOGARTH (1697-1764), the great English painter and pictorial satirist, was born at Bartholomew Close in London on the 10th of November 1697, and baptized on the 28th in the church of St Bartholomew the Great. He had two younger sisters, Mary , born in 1699, and Ann, born in 1701. His father, Richard Hogarth, who died in 1718, was a schoolmaster and literary hack, who had come to the metropolis to seek that fortune which had been denied to him in his native Westmorland . The son seems to have been early distinguished by a talent for drawing and an active perceptive faculty rather than by any close attention to the learning which he was soon shrewd enough to see had not made his parent prosper. "Shows of all sorts gave me uncommon pleasure when an infant ," he says, "and mimicry , common to all children, was remarkable in me.. .. My exercises when at school were more remarkable for the ornaments which adorned them than for the exercise itself." William Hogarth (1697-1764) used his prints to reflect the society that he found himself in. He dealth with many issues through his art; everything from urban decay to political decay. In his works we follow the journey of decline that Hogarth saw around him, and he reflected in familiar settings in his prints. In many instances we are able to follow the journey of some wayward soul on their travels into debauchery and onward past salvation. Such journeys are seen in The Harlot's Progress, The Rake's Progress, Industry and Idleness, and many more.
Now it must be understood that not all of his works depicted the culture around him as decaying and infectious. Many of his prints and paintings comemorated great people or great scenes found in the literature of the time.
Below is a meager sampling of some of his works. I have put some of my own explinations with a few of the prints. Keep in mind these are my interpretations and not authoritative. Many of my interpretations have been shaped by the help of an excellent Restoration Specialist; Dr. Catherine Ingrassia. Other interpretations have merely come to me through study of his work and authoritative texts. Please enjoy and if you have any corrections or comments please send them to me.

    Room Six: William Hogarth
William Hogarth (1697-1764) was one of several engravers invited to present illustrations for J. and R. Tonson's edition of Don Quixote (1738). By 1720 Hogarth was engraving on copper and began to produce illustrations for a number of books, among the best of which accompanied the 1726 edition of Samuel Butler's Hudibras . Plans for the Tonson edition, under the patronage and control of Lord Carteret, had been discussed at least since the late 1720s, and Hogarth submitted a series of six designs during this time. For reasons still unclear, his illustrations were not accepted, and perhaps were even rejected in favor of John Vanderbank's engravings. At least one scholar has speculated that Hogarth was not pleased with the control exerted over the project by Carteret and his agent Oldfield, and may have withdrawn his designs to pursue other projects. Five of the six engravings illustrate episodes from Part I of Don Quixote ; the sixth, "Sancho's Feast," refers to an episode in Part II, Chapter 47. In " Don Quixote releases the Galley Slaves ," (shown above) Hogarth carefully follows the novel in his protrayal of the episode (Part I, Chapter 22).

Hogarth, William : English painter and engraver. He was one of the leading British artists of the first half of the 18th century. He was trained as an engraver and by 1720 had established his own business printing billheads, book illustrations and funeral tickets. In his spare time he learnt to paint, firstly at St. Martin's Lane Academy and then under Sir James Thornhill, whose daughter he married in 1729. He made a name for himself with small family groups (e.g. The Wollaston Family , 1730, H.C. Wollaston's Trustees) and conversation pieces (e.g. The Beggar's Opera , one of several versions, c1729, London, Tate Gallery). Around this time he also set himself up as a portrait painter. Shortly afterwards, in c1731, he executed his first series of modern morality paintings, a totally new concept intended for wider dissemination through engraving. A Harlot's Progress (six scenes, destroyed by fire) was followed by A Rake's Progress (c1735, eight scenes, London, Sir John Soane's Museum) and
