Taikan Yokoyama Hans Hofmann Birth Year : 1880 Death Year : 1966 Country : Germany Hans Hofmann, one of the great art teachers of our time, was born in Weissenberg, Germany. He ran away from home when he was sixteen, and in 1898 began to study art in Munich. By 1901, his Impressionist paintings had so impressed a wealthy Berliner that he sent Hofmann to Paris for ten years, paying all his expenses. Hofmann's friends, in Paris, included Matisse Picasso , and Delaunay; all leaders of the most advanced artistic circle of the period before World War I. Once in Germany, on vacation, in 1914, Hofmann was exempted from military service because of an earlier lung ailment, and in 1915 he opened his own school in Munich. He taught there until 1930 when he was invited to teach two summer sessions at the University of California, and was thus able to escape Hitler and the Nazi strictures upon modern art. Hofmann emigrated from Germany in 1932 and two years later, at the age of fifty-four, he opened a school in New York and then a summer school in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He continued to teach until 1958 when he decided to devote all his time to painting. Hofmann provided the link between European art of the early twentieth century and the art of post-war America. He arrived steeped in great traditions ranging from the humanism of the Renaissance to the enthusiasms of

skip to main skip to sidebar It's All About Me... Wednesday, May 23, 2007 Releasing My Inner Hans Hofmann One of these days I'm going to paint. I even have a set of acrylics, brushes, palette and my first canvas. I have visions in my head of colorful abstracts. Why abstracts? Because I can't draw worth a damn. Why even attempt to create a realistic rendition of something when I know it'll come out looking like a child's finger painting? I don't quite know how I'll transfer the images in my head onto the canvas. My last art lessons were in 8th grade. I am fairly certain I did not make an A in that class. It wasn't as bad as my band class. The band director, extremely frustrated with my eager yet awful fumblings on the little red plastic recorder, screeched at me to stop! stop! stop! before publicly humiliating me by announcing that "You! Will! Never! Be! In! My! Band!" and suggesting I go join the choir. Unfortunately for me, I have the type of singing voice that no one wants to hear. Fortunately for me, my band director did not return the next day to school, or the next, or the next. He'd had a nervous breakdown and never came back. I like to think it wasn't entirely my lack of talent that sent him over the edge. Back to painting. I have the desire, the tools and the images swirling around my brain. Now I have to take the plunge and actually put brush to canvas and see what happens. At worst it will be a very creative and colorful mess. Kind of like me.

A Little Bit About Hans Hofmann - Mandi Ballard Published May 23, 2007 Art Ideas Art Technique Artist art history Last year I went to the newest museum in Austin, the Blanton, which is part of the University of Texas at Austin. Though most of the works have been part of the university’s collection for many years, they were all new to me. One painting on the second floor caught my attention, and as I got closer I realized I had fallen in love! It was a work by Hans Hofmann, Elysium (I can’t locate a picture of it online). What struck me from across the room was the depth of color. It looked amazingly thick and rich. Once I got closer I realized it looked thick because it was! My second reaction was just pure awe at the beauty of the vibrant color choices. The whole piece sang with purity. A good example is this piece, “Pompeii” 1959 , which is done in the same style.
