Hans Hofmann : Master of Abstract Expressionism
Hanshofmann.net is dedicated to the abstract painter Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) . His incredible imagery inspired his students as well as artists throughout the world. From his smaller works on paper to his larger paintings, they are all unique and powerful. Hoffman has been called a Fauvist, Cubist, and Abstract Expressionist. He used aspects of all these styles to create his own personal style.

Research Interests
The research in Dr. Hofmann's laboratory seeks to understand the molecular and hormonal mechanisms that underlie social behavior and its evolution. African cichlid fishes are an ideal model system to address these questions because of their recent and rapid radiations that have resulted in hundreds of phenotypically diverse species. Our work uses a broad spectrum of approaches, ranging from ecological studies in the East African Great Lakes to functional genomics using custom-made cDNA microarrays for gene expression profiling in the brain. We also employ hormonal perturbations, neuroanatomical techniques and advanced microscopy, and bioinformatics tools. Although we have been working on a variety of topics in several model systems, current projects focus on two main areas: 1) Identifying genes that are involved in implementing social dominance and sex roles in the Tanganyikan mouthbrooder Astatotilapia burtoni ; and 2) a comparative analysis of the ecological and molecular basis and evolution of divergent social organization (monogamy vs. polygamy) in a group of closely related (monophyletic) species, the Ectodini cichlids from Lake Tanganyika. By carefully and systematically querying the brains of these fish, we can use expression profiling to identify the molecular building blocks of complex behavior.

IN 1966, A MONTH BEFORE HIS DEATH, HANS HOFMANN DESCRIBED HIS PROCESS OF painting in these words: When I paint, I paint under the dictate of feeling or sensing, and the outcome all the time is supposed to say something. And that is most often my sense of nature. . . it might suggest landscape and might only suggest certain moods, and so on but this must be expressed in pictorial means, according to the inner laws of these means. Only this is acceptable as art.[1] Hofmann went home for a visit in 1914. When World War I prevented his return to Paris, he opened his school for modern art in a Munich suburb. During the war years, Hofmann became closely acquainted with Kandinsky's work.[4] Following the war, young Americans began to flock to Hofmann's school. Carl Holty , Worth Ryder, Glenn Wessels, Vaclav Vytlacil , and others studied in Munich or attended his summer classes in Bavaria, France, and Italy.[5] In the summer of 1930, at the invitation of Worth Ryder, Hofmann taught at the University of California, Berkeley. He spent the next winter in Germany, and the following spring returned to teach in Los Angeles (at the Chouinard School of Art) and at Berkeley, where he wrote the first version of Creation in Form and Color: A Textbook for Instruction in Art . In 1932 he moved to New York. He taught for a year at the Art Students League, where his students included Burgoyne Diller, Harry Holtzman, and

Autumn Gold Autumn Gold, incipient rectangles of color have been formed from the smaller dabs that Hofmann used in previous works, but here greatly enlarged. The rectangular forms first materialized in 1957, the year in which Hofmann created Autumn Gold; Hofmann shared his quasi-utopian faith in the emotional or spiritual resonance of abstract form with the early pioneers of nonobjective art. His strict formal principles were, in turn, a significant model for many abstract painters in New York, where Hofmann had settled in 1934. Introduction
Since the stone age humankind has created masterworks which possess a mysterious quality of solidity and grandeur or monumentality Michelangelo likened monumentality to sculptural relief: Braque called monumentality space Hans Hoffman, himself one of the masters, called monumentality pictorial depth I focus on painting and I use the terms pictorial space or plastic structure or plastic form for monumentality. Pictorial space is created in the tension between pairs of opposing planes. Opposing planes pull against each other, each containing the other, paradoxically, within the flat surface of the canvas. (This may sound obscure but you will see it clearly in the diagrams that follow.) Sculpture also can be plastic: opposing masses pull against each other, each containing the other and creating tension in the space which lies between them. Painting has other vital aspects like subject matter, expression, style and technique but pictorial space doesn't depend on these and I don't speak of them. I speak of color only as it used to construct pictorial space. Monumentality moves us profoundly and apparently has done so since the paleolith. In the last chapter I use patients' vignettes to suggest a reason for this. I show that there are profound parallels between the structure of a monumental work of art and the structure of an

In 1932 Hofmann closed his Munich school and moved to New York to teach at the Art Students League. In 1934 he opened the Hofmann School of Fine Arts in New York, which led to his becoming known as the father of Abstract Expressionism and of the New York School. Hofmann is, perhaps, best known for his use of brilliant color, wherein several colored rectangles seem to float over a background of loosely brushed but heavily built-up colors . . . Hofmann explained his theory of the use of space in his paintings as 'push-pull' theory of movement. He said that Italian perspective is all wrong. He felt that the illusion had only one direction in depth, and that nothing came back. However, he said that in his paintings space goes in and it comes back. The tensions he creates show shapes that are constantly moving in and out."1 This "push and pull" leads the eye to each part of the picture, rather than letting it rest on one particular spot.
