According to the Hofmann biography at the Tate Gallery website , Hofmann's work is distinguished by "a rigorous concern with pictorial structure, spatial illusion, and colour relationships." The Guggenheim Collection's information on Hofmann states that his "completely abstract works date from the 1940s" . Hofmann believed that abstract art was a way to get at what was really important. He famously stated that "the ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak."

    Birth Year : 1880
Death Year : 1966 Country : Germany Hans Hofmann, one of the great art teachers of our time, was born in Weissenberg, Germany. He ran away from home when he was sixteen, and in 1898 began to study art in Munich. By 1901, his Impressionist paintings had so impressed a wealthy Berliner that he sent Hofmann to Paris for ten years, paying all his expenses. Hofmann's friends, in Paris, included Matisse Picasso , and Delaunay; all leaders of the most advanced artistic circle of the period before World War I. Once in Germany, on vacation, in 1914, Hofmann was exempted from military service because of an earlier lung ailment, and in 1915 he opened his own school in Munich. He taught there until 1930 when he was invited to teach two summer sessions at the University of California, and was thus able to escape Hitler and the Nazi strictures upon modern art. Hofmann emigrated from Germany in 1932 and two years later, at the age of fifty-four, he opened a school in New York and then a summer school in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He continued to teach until 1958 when he decided to devote all his time to painting. Hofmann provided the link between European art of the early twentieth century and the art of post-war America. He arrived steeped in great traditions ranging from the humanism of the Renaissance to the enthusiasms of

    Biography:

Hans Hofmann was born in Weissenburg, Germany and studied in his home country at Munich. He came across the influence of the Impressionists, the Fauves, and the Cubists in Paris in the early 1900’s. He began his own school in Munich in 1915, then moved his school to New York in 1931, where he taught his technique of improvisation. Hofmann’s work is insistent upon color, texture, and form, his experimentation with these aspects helping to develop Abstract Expressionism in America.

CLEMENT GREENBERG HOFMANN More than a simple essay in praise of a great artist, this pays tribute to Hofmann's vast influence on American abstraction as well as on Greenberg, himself. Unfortunately, the "omissions" that Greenberg mentions in his first paragraph continue to this day. Hofmann the artist, as opposed to Hofmann the famous teacher, seems never to quite get hs due... TF H ANS H OFMANN'S ART Hofmann himself explains the lateness of his development by the relative complacency fostered in him during his Paris years by the regular support of a patron, and by the time and energy he needed, afterward, to perfect himself as a teacher. But I would suggest, further, that his Paris experience confronted him with too many faits accomplis by artists his own age or only a few years older; that he had to wait until the art movements of those and the inter-war years were spent before making his own move; that he had first to "get over" Fauvism and Cub-ism, and over Kandinsky, Mondrian, Arp, Masson, and Miro as well.

Hans Hofmann was born in Germany in 1880. Having studied art as a young man, largely in Munich, he became acquainted with the paintings of the Fauves in 1904 in Paris, where he knew Matisse. For the next 25 years he divided his time between his native Germany and Paris.
In 1930, Hofmann was asked to teach at the University of California, Berkeley, and became so attracted to the United States that he settled here permanently, becoming a citizen in 1941. After moving to New York, where he died in 1966, Hofmann spent his summers in Provincetown, Mass. and ran a famous school for artists there.
Hofmann's work is related to that of Abstract Expressionism in its freedom and exhuberent openness. The colors in his paintings are inevitably powerful, projecting joyous, sensuous enthusiasm. Although much of his later accomplishment was characterized by compositions built of square elements, Hofmann's work until about 1955 was unpredictable and apparently impulsive. It was, however, always underlayed with a carefully worked out structure. Undulating Expanse of 1955 is unusual in Hofmann's work because it is composed in a long horizontal format. The reason is that the painting is related to a commission for a mural that was never executed. Two small studies for this project, similar in composition but more exaggerated in format, also exist.

Hans Hofmann Narrative originated from: Ahrens, Nyla. Provincetown: The Art Colony A Brief History and Guide.(1997 and revised 2000) Provincetown Art Association and Museum Hans Hofmann was an internationally recognized artist and teacher of abstract modernism. Before arriving in Provincetown in the 1930's, he had studied in Paris, operated his own school in Munich, taught at the Art Students League and other American schools of art. He established the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in New York in 1933 and in 1934 opened his summer school in Provincetown. He initially leased the former Hawthorne home and barn studio on Miller Hill, then taught in Fritz Bultman's studio in Days Lumberyard.. In 1945 Hofmann bought property at 76 Commercial Street which gave him a studio space for teaching. Hofmann's classes were filled with established artists as well as neophytes, and his Friday afternoon critiques drew crowds of artists, critics and vacationers. It was noted that nearly everyone of importance in the world of modern art came to these sessions at least once and many major artists were drawn by his presence to spend summers in Provincetown. Among those who came were Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Larry Rivers, Fritz Bultman, Franz Kline and Mark Rothko. After 43 years of teaching - 23 of them in Provincetown - Hofmann closed both his schools in 1958 in order to paint full-time. Hans Hoffmann died in 1966 shortly after hanging a show of his work at the Kootz Gallery in New York.
