Barbara Hepworth was a Sculptor whose career spanned five decades from scholarships in Italy and first exhibitions in the 1920's to large-scale commissions and international exhibitions in the 1960's and 1970's. Lots of literature has been produced on Hepworth, her sculpture and thoughts. I have studied many of these and looked at Hepworth's work in some depth and have written an Essay entitled " Barbara Hepworth: The interaction between people and the landscape as a basis for sculpture ". Which can be found By Clicking here. During these 50 years she produced numerous drawings and paintings to accompany about 600 sculptures, 579 of which her estate has catalogued. Often when reading older texts about Hepworth's work one comes across reference to different works, some of which may be hard to find further infomation(either because they exist in private collections, or have been lost or destroyed). This Website aims to create a point of reference, with links to sources of further infomation and where possible images that cover most of the known Her known works. All of which have been presented with their names dates and "Barbara Hepworth archive numbers" (these are often denoted by a BH in front of a number, in catalogues or books of Hepworth sculpture).

The studio and sculpture garden owned by noted 20th century sculptor Barbara Hepworth are maintained by the Tate St. Ives museum as part of its committment to preserve and offer access to the best of modern British art. Hepworth created the garden before her death, and asked that the sculpture be displayed exactly as she had placed it. Hepworth lived in St. Ives from 1939 until her tragic death in a studio fire in 1975. She was drawn to southern Cornwall, as many artists are, by the wonderful light for which the area is famous. Most of her sculpture can be characterised as abstract; she preferred to create impressions of objects rather than portray the objects themselves. She worked in a variety of mediums, and sculptures in wood, stone, and bronze are on display, as well as paintings, drawings, and archival material.

Professor Hammacher, who knew Barbara Hepworth for many years, has added new material to his acclaimed study to bring the story up to the time of her death, and has included several new illustrations.
