Introduction
Visiting Info Works on Display Books ... Hepworth Collection View of Barbara Hepworth Garden
Stone Sculpture (Fugue II)
Visiting the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden is a unique experience, offering a remarkable insight into the work and outlook of one of Britain's most important twentieth century artists. Sculptures in bronze, stone and wood are on display in the Museum and Garden, along with paintings, drawings and archive material. Barbara Hepworth first came to live in Cornwall with her husband Ben Nicholson and their young family at the outbreak of war in 1939. She lived and worked in Trewyn studios, now the Hepworth Museum, from 1949 until her death in 1975. Following her wish to establish her home and studio as a museum of her work, Trewyn Studio and much of the artist's work remaining there was given to the nation and placed in the care of the Tate Gallery in 1980. 'Finding Trewyn Studio was a sort of magic', wrote Barbara Hepworth; 'here was a studio, a yard and garden where I could work in open air and space'. When she first arrived at Trewyn Studio, Hepworth was still largely preoccupied with stone and wood carving, but during the 1950s she increasingly made sculpture in bronze as well. This led her to create works on a more monumental scale, for which she used the garden as a viewing area. The bronzes now in the garden are seen in the environment for which they were created, and most are in the positions in which the artist herself placed them. The garden itself was laid out by Barbara Hepworth with help from a friend, the composer Priaulx Rainier.

BARBARA HEPWORTH
Biography

English sculptor, one of the most important figures in the development of abstract art in Britain She trained at Leeds School of Art, where she became a friend of Henry Moore, and at the Royal College of Art. Her early sculptures were quasi-naturalistic and had much in common with Moore’s work (Doves, Manchester City Art Gal., 1927), but she already showed a tendency to submerge detail in simple forms, and by the early 1930s her work was entirely abstract. She worked both in wood and stone, and she described an important aspect of her early career as being the excitement of discovering the nature of carving’-this at a time when there was a general antagonism to direct carving’. In this, too, she was united with Moore, but her work, unlike his, is not representational in origin but conceived as abstract forms. Yet she consistently professed a Romantic attitude of emotional affinity with nature, speaking of carving both as a biological necessity’ and as an extension of the telluric forces which mould the landscape’. From 1925 to 1931 Hepworth was married to the sculptor John Skeaping (1901-80). In 1931 she met Ben Nicholson, who became her second husband a year later, and through him became aware of contemporary European developments. They joined Abstraction-Création in 1933, and Unit One in the same year. During the 1930s Hepworth, Nicholson, and Moore worked in close harmony and became recognized as the nucleus of the abstract movement in England.

(Click on picture for more of (artist's) work.) Every artist has a favorite medium. It's usually the one in which he or she is strongest. It's usually the one the artist finds most expressive, sometimes most salable, and usually the one for which he or she is most noted professionally. But the mark of a truly exceptional artist is found in the ability to move effortlessly from one art medium to another, from 2-D to 3-D and back again, often expressing the same subjects, thoughts, or feelings in both, interchangeably. Picasso did it. Lichtenstein has. So did Warhol. And of course, the Renaissance masters, Leonardo and Michelangelo in particular, practically invented the practice. Perhaps it might be called the defining difference between an "artist" (in the classic sense of the word) and a mere painter or sculptor. In this past century, another who did this and did it well, was the British artist, Dame Jocelyn Barbara Hepworth.
Like so many artists of her time, Hepworth began studying art as a painter. Sculpture is seldom an art one attacks in early adolescence. She was born in 1903 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. Coming from a reasonably well-to-do family she was encouraged in her creative pursuits at a time when women were only JUST beginning to enjoy any kind of professional status in art. She studied for two years at the Leeds School of Art before being admitted in 1921 to the Royal College of Art in London (run by the Royal Academy). There she met two men, both fellow students, both of whom were to be quite important in her life. Their careers paralleled her own. One was a fellow sculptor, the other a painter. One was Henry Moore. The other was Ben Nicholson. One was a lifelong friend, the other a lifelong husband. In 1931, she married Nicholson.

Renowned for working in a variety of different mediums including wood, stone, bronze and marble, the studio and sculpture garden contains a spectacular insight into her life and a magnificent collection of her work. Born in Wakefield in 1903 and trained at the Leeds School of Art, Hepworth eventually settled in St Ives with her family in 1939 where she built her wonderful studio and sculpture garden.

Creative Quotations from . . . Barbara Hepworth
(1903-1975) born on Jan 10 English sculptor. "She designed large geometric shapes from wood and stone; introduced the "hole," painted hollows to abstract sculpture." . . . I rarely draw what I see. I draw what I feel in my body.
[My works are] an imitation of my own past and present and of my own creative vitality as I experience them in one particular instant of my emotional and imaginative life. . . I must always have a clear image of the form of a work before I begin. Otherwise there is no impulse to create. "Half-way through any work, one is often tempted to go off on a tangent. Once you have yielded, you will be tempted to yield again and again. . . . Finally, you would only produce something hybrid. . ." "One must be entirely sensitive to the structure of the material that one is handling. One must yield to it in tiny details of execution, perhaps the handling of the surface or grain, and one must master it as a whole."
