Barbara Hepworth
British, born Wakefield, 1903-1975
Figure for Landscape, 1960, cast 1965 Bronze 106 x 50-1/2 x 26-1/2 in. (269 x 128 x 67.3 cm) Gift of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, 1966 (66.2450) Barbara Hepworth was a key figure in the abstract movement in Britain. Her adherence to abstraction was lifelong and drew on geometric as well as organic shapes. It was she who introduced into England the idea of piercing the solid mass of sculpture with a "hole," making the object more transparent. This concept influenced the future work of Henry Moore, among others. In time, Hepworth's use of this technique grew more complex as she stretched the hole into oval and spiral shapes. Hepworth, like her friend Moore, created sculptural forms derived from nature. She was especially inspired by the sea-washed rocks near her home in Cornwall. In the Hirshhorn's sculpture Figure for Landscape , the abstract shapes vaguely suggest a standing figure, perhaps robed and hooded. Paradoxically, the sculpture's hollow interior becomes more important than the enveloping bronze. As the viewer's eye is drawn inside the sculpture, the openings invite the surrounding landscape to become part of the artwork.

Barbara Hepworth
Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) played an important part in the development of nonobjective art-especially sculpture-in Britain. Although she enjoyed nature and was inspired by it, her work is entirely abstract. Hepworth used a technique called direct carving, which was out of style 'at the time. That means she made a model of her idea for a sculpture, then carved it directly into wood or stone. Already a successful artist, Hepworth married Ben Nicholson, one of England's best abstract painters. Along with their close friend Henry Moore, they were central figures in the world of British abstract art in the 1930s. Hepworth concentrated on the counterplay between form and space in sculpture. In 1931, with a piece called "Pierced Form, she first introduced the idea of the "hole": Hepworth showed the relationship between outside and inside, making space become a significant part of the sculpture itself-not just the setting in which a hole existed. Henry Moore used her idea in almost all of his later sculptures. By the 1950s, Hepworth was an internationally famous sculptor. She received many honors and important commissions. By then she also worked in cast bronze. Still

English sculptor, trained in Leeds and married to Ben Nicholson until 1951. She moved to St Ives in 1939 and her garden, now part of the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, is open to the public. Unlike Henry Moore, who started with natural forms, Hepworth's sculpture was essentially abstract. In 1934, she explained that she wanted 'to make exactly the right relation of masses, a living thing in stone, to express my awareness and thought of these things'.

Barbara Hepworth was undoubtedly one of the most significant British artists of the twentieth century. Her consistent vision and commitment to a vocabulary of simplified geometric sculptural forms first developed in the 1930s whilst she exhibited alongside artists such as Piet Mondrian, Jean Arp, Naum Gabo, Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson in the International Movement.

She was born in 1903, the eldest of four children and the daughter of a civil engineer who lived and worked in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Unlike many artists, she had a gift for mathematics, and her closeness to her father and his work familiarized her with technical drawings. At the age of sixteen she won a scholarship to the Leeds School of Art, where Henry Moore was studying. Instead of doing the compulsory two years at the School she fitted the course into a single year, and went to the Royal College of Art in 1921 on a senior scholarship. She spent three years there, and in 1924 was a finalist for the Prix de Rome and runner up to John Skeaping, her future husband. Despite her failure to win the prize, a grant from the West Riding enabled her to live and travel in Italy for a year. She and Skeaping travelled to Florence together, and married in the Palazzo Vecchio. Later they went to Siena and then to Rome. In Rome she received a thorough training in carving, which was not then taught at the Royal College since sculpture was considered to be mainly a matter of modelling.

Dame Barbara Hepworth British sculptor in full Dame Jocelyn Barbara Hepworth
Main
born January 10, 1903, Wakefield, Yorkshire, England died May 20, 1975, St. Ives, Cornwall sculptor whose works were among the earliest abstract sculptures produced in England. Her lyrical forms and feeling for material made her one of the most influential sculptors of the mid-20th century. Fascinated from early childhood with natural forms and textures, Hepworth decided at age 15 to become a sculptor. In 1919 she enrolled in the Leeds School of Art, where she befriended fellow student Henry Moore . Their lifelong friendship and reciprocal influence were important factors in the parallel development of their careers. Reclining Figure (1932) resemble rounded biomorphic forms and natural stones; they seem to be the fruit of long weathering instead of the hard work with a chisel they actually represent. In 1933 Hepworth married (her second husband; the first was the sculptor John Skeaping) the English abstract painter Ben Nicholson , under whose influence she began to make severe, geometric pieces with straight edges and immaculate surfaces.
