Oil on canvas. 23 1/4 x 25 in. (59 x 64 cm)
Anonymous gift. 84.74 As the leading exponent of Impressionism in the United States, Hassam was often compared to Claude Monet, much to Hassam's annoyance. While certainly aware of Monet, Hassam identified more strongly with other artistic influences, such as the work of J. M. W. Turner, the writings of John Ruskin, and the "aesthetic movement" in general, which swept through New England in the late nineteenth century.
The Isles of Shoals are a group of small, rocky islands about ten miles off the New Hampshire coast, near Portsmouth. Hassam spent many summers on the largest island, Appledore, drawn, like many fellow artists, writers, and musicians, by the celebrated poet and journalist Celia Laighton Thaxter. The paintings executed at Appledore, accounting for approximately ten percent of his oeuvre , are perhaps his finest accomplishments in the exploration of color and form. He believed that true Impressionism was realism, in that the artist found inspiration in nature and did not allow artistic tradition to interrupt the connection between observation and the resulting image. Childe Hassam: American Impressionist
When a president wraps himself in the flag, he becomes smaller, as if he and America alike had retreated into a cocoon. When Childe Hassam unwrapped the flag, he had found his most memorable image. Few artists since before the Renaissance have taken an icon as their subject, and fewer still have made it an icon themselves. For Hassam, it singled out a moment of celebration. He had passed fifty by the time he painted rallies, mostly along Fifth Avenue, during World War I. He, America, and its proudest city had arrived, and what more was there to say? From his retrospective at the Met this summer, quite a bit. It shows an artist who found his subject early and kept at it. It shows an American Impressionist out to rival the French, but with little interest in what made them precursors of modern art. Conversely, it shows an artist whose decorative, nostalgic view of cities made him by necessity a painter of modern life. More than almost anyone, he looks back to his roots in the New England elite and ahead to the urban scene. His dual focus makes his a story in miniature of American Impressionism and Realism.
Capture the flag
All well and good, but it leaves out pretty much all of Hassam's career and the specificity of American painting. Before I get too keen on social history, I better remember that Hassam's understanding of it arose less from political maturity or opportunism than from the subject of his art. I had best take a closer look at what makes the New York scenes so emblematic of an Impressionist. Contrast them with another American icon, one painted after a second world war.

Childe Hassam, Rainy Day, New York, ca. 1889. Oil on canvas. Austerity can be beautiful Calvary Church in the Snow The peaked roofs on Calvary Church resemble snow-buried pines. The longest roof blends into the winter sky. White-gray strokes dance on the wind. Falling snow becomes blossoms on two bare trees. Sketchily painted, tiny people in thick coats, lean into gusts, struggle up a white embankment. One small hansom cab is visible. Hassam always knows how to direct our eye: each object or figure is exactly where it should be. Early Evening, Union Square Early Evening, Union Square presents a moment frozen in time. We recognize it without being there. Winter, Midnight Early Evening In Rainy Day, New York (1889), a sweet paper doll of a woman wears an elaborate hat and a vanilla frock with leg-of-mutton sleeves and tiny galoshes, in the rain. Her umbrella handle is as thin as a pipe cleaner, but her big umbrella is bluer than midnight. Small aureoles, reflections, float in undefined shop windows. Poised at the left, making her entrance, our heroine tugs at her long skirt and we hear the flounces rustle. Her unseen friend, Childe Hassam, master of precipitation, watches, from somewhere.

ARTIST: CHILDE HASSAM (1859-1935) Childe Hassam was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts and died in East Hampton, New York in 1935. He was a prolific Impressionist artist whose city views and poetic landscapes became the touchstone of American Impressionism. After establishing himself in Boston as a painter of urban life, Hassam sailed for Europe late in 1886 with his bride, the former Maude Doane. The Hassams took up residence in Paris, and during the next several years, Hassam's exposure to the work of the French Impressionists was evident in his brightened palette and broken brushwork. He concentrated on the urban life of Paris, carefully rendering the streets, architecture, and local denizens, all seen with the optimism and euphemism that was the prevailing artistic perspective. His canvases were exhibited and honored at the Paris Salon during these years and the extant works from this French period (1887-1889) were among his most inspired. Among the most admired pictures of this time are a group of paintings depicting women in the elegant back garden of a friend's country home in Villiers-le- Bel, a village north of Paris. Gondoliers, Venice, c. 1891

"WHOSE LARGENESS OF HEART IS EVEN AS THE SAND ON THE SEASHORE"
THIS VOLUME IS AFFECTIONATELY INSCRIBED AT the Isles of Shoals, among the ledges of the largest island, Appledore, lies the small garden which in the following pages I have endeavored to describe. Ever since I could remember anything, flowers have been like dear friends to me, comforters, inspirers, powers to uplift and to cheer. A lonely child, living on the lighthouse island ten miles away from the mainland, every blade of grass that sprang out of the ground, every humblest weed, was precious in my sight, and I began a little garden when not more than five years old. From this, year after year, the larger one, which has given so much pleasure to so many people, has grown. The first small bed at the lighthouse island contained only Marigolds, pot Marigolds, fire-colored blossoms which were the joy of my heart and the delight of my eyes. This scrap of garden, literally not more than a v vi PREFATORY yard square, with its barbaric splendors of color, I worshiped like any Parsee. When I planted the dry, brown seeds I noticed how they were shaped, like crescents, with a fine line of ornamental dots, a "beading" along the whole length of the centre, from this crescent sprang the Marigold plant, each of whose flowers was like

In 1892, French and American Impressionism celebrated a symbolic marriage in Theodore Robinson's painting, “The Wedding March”. The actual wedding taking place was that of American Impressionist Theodore Butler to Suzanne Hoschede, stepdaughter of Claude Monet, arguably the high priest of French Impressionism. However, the merger of French and American Impressionism could be said to have already occurred in the person of two remarkable artists: Mary Cassatt, who, despite her American birth, is widely seen as a seminal figure in French Impressionism, and Childe Hassam, who, though considered the leading American Impressionist, attained his first fame with Parisian street scenes. At the 1937 exhibition, “Leaders of American Impressionism”, John I. H. Baur, a leading art scholar, declared that Mary Cassatt and Childe Hassam were “pioneer Impressionists” who had “contributed most to the inauguration and development of Impressionism in America ”. The idealized representation of a modern woman of leisure captured during an introspective moment was a popular subject for American artists at the turn of the century. About 1910 Hassam, one of America's foremost Impressionists, began the "New York Window" series, a group of paintings depicting a contemplative woman seated before a curtained window. In The Breakfast Room the form of the faceless subject is one of several elements- including the seemingly mundane silhouette of the window, the vase of flowers, and the bowl of fruit- that the artist used to balance his asymmetrical composition. Clearly, Hassam delighted in differentiating the visual effects of light on various textures, such as the sheer curtain, the gossamer fabric of the sitter's dress, the reflective surface of the tabletop, and the sparkling transparency of the glass vase. -SES Back

Edmund Charles Tarbell , William Merritt Chase and J. Alden Weir, among others. His own work showed that influence in many ways, there are numerous paintings of flower gardens bursting with dabs of pure color, street scenes with finely dressed gentry awash in dappled sun and landscapes blanketed in brightly lit snow. But he also diverged in may ways from the Impressionist path. Hassam was also a superb etcher, again more akin to Whistler than the Impressionists. There are excellent examples of his work in major museums in the US, particularly, as you might expect, on the East Coast. Like the French Impressionists, the American Impressionists are popular subjects for publishers and there are numerous books on Hassam and his explorations of brilliant color and subtle light.
