Childe Hassam en plein air
Magazine Antiques Dec, 2004 by Margaret E. Bullock Painting outdoors is a time-honored tradition. It is particularly favored by artists who wish to convey a distinct experience, and it was extensively practiced by the American impressionist Childe Hassam. Versatile and prolific. Hassam was a committed traveler who regularly painted his surroundings: New York's streets, the coast of New England, Europe, and the American West. He worked in a variety of mediums and often modified his technique to suit his subjects or circumstances. His locationin the studio or outdoorsdirected the course of his adaptable brushwork. After signing early works "Fred C. Hassam", he dropped "Fred C." and began using " F. Frederick Childe Hassam was born in 1859 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. In 1876 he was apprenticed to a local wood engraver and soon thereafter became a freelance illustrator. In the evenings he attended the life class at the Boston Art Club, then briefly studied anatomy with William Rimmer at the Lowell Institute, and took private lessons from the German-born painter Ignaz Gaugengigl. During the 1890s and the following two decades, Hassam spent his summers painting throughout New England. His favorite sites were Old Lyme, Connecticut, and Appledore, on the Isles of Shoals, off the coast of New Hampshire, where he produced some of his best known works. A prolific and industrious artist, Hassam painted numerous scenes of both the city and the countryside. Many of his early street scenes of Boston, Paris, and New York, with their reflections of wet pavement or of gaslight on the snow, evidenced a talent for capturing the effects of light and atmosphere. Shortly before his death, in East Hampton in August 1935, he arranged to bequeath all the paintings remaining in his studio to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. According to his wish they were sold to establish a fund for the purchase of American works to be donated to museums.

Bill Long 12/11/04 Oregon Retrospective at the Portland Art Museum For the first fifty years after Statehood (1859), Oregon did not play host to many illustrious painters. One exception was the Boston-born Impressionist painter Childe Hassam, who visited his friend, Oregon attorney C.E.S. Wood, during 1904 and 1908. Many of Hassam's paintings from his two Oregon visits, along with some of his earlier paintings and later etchings, are now on display at the PAM until March 2005. Skillfully arranged by Associate Curator of American Art Margaret Bullock, the Hassam exhibit offers a rare glimpse into the creative process of Hassam when confronted with a new and completely unfamiliar terrain. His paintings of the Oregon Coast around Cannon Beach in 1904 and his Harney County paintings in 1908 give glimpses into the undiscovered Oregon country as well as into the soul of a prominent artist. How to Review an Exhibit I decided that before I would pen my own thoughts of the exhibit I would "check out" the review of the Oregonian's art critic, D.K. Row.

    Childe Hassam
    Marblehead's Etcher
    by Alec MacDonald
Famed artist, Childe Hassam, drew a Marblehead Messenger sketch more than a century ago. For nearly a century, the first "serious" work of art by one of American's foremost artists gracefully adorned the front page of the Marblehead Messenger and is still reproduced weekly in an inside page of the Marblehead Reporter.
The artist is Frederick Childe Hassam and the sketch he sold to the Messenger is that panoramic view of the town of Marblehead which became so familiar to generations of townspeople over the years.
The work is described as "serious" because until that time all that young Childe Hassam had sold were letterhead sketches for Lynn shoe factories. The budding artist was then at a wood engraver's shop in his native Boston.
Today, Childe Hassam's works are displayed in major galleries of American and Europe and bring prices of more than a quarter million dollars. Two of his works, "Boston Common at Twilight" painted in 1886, and "Grand Prix Day" (in Paris), painted in 1887, are on permanent display at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
By the end of the 19th century, he was ranked by some citrates as one of the "Big Three,"

New York City as a Symbol for American Power in Childe Hassam’s Flag Paintings
Jennifer Faith Edelstein, Princeton Class of 2009
I painted the flag series after we went into the war. There was that Preparedness Day, and I looked up the avenue and saw these wonderful flags waving, and I painted the series of flag pictures after that. - Childe Hassam As Childe Hassam stated to an interviewer in 1927, he had been inspired to produce perhaps his best known work of art, his “series of flag pictures,” by his vision of the “wonderful flags waving” in the Preparedness Day parade, a patriotic celebration that occurred in New York City on May 13, 1916 (qtd. Fort, Flag Paintings , 8). Hassam’s flag paintings, which depict a view of New York City adorned with American flags and those of the other Allied nations of World War I, resonate partly due to the “stirring patriotic imagery” of the flags (Weinberg, 216). Many art historians, including Susan Ilene Fort, a foremost Hassam scholar, have characterized these paintings as Hassam’s contribution to the war effort because of Hassam’s portrayal of the flags, which serve as a clear patriotic symbol and, thus, evoke nationalistic feeling and support for the Allied cause. So, from her interpretation of Hassam’s statement regarding the Preparedness Day parade, Fort claims that Hassam was “no doubt inspired by the heightened war sentiment and the increased number of war-related ceremonies,” with his “strong partisanship” motivated by his own “virulent dislike of Germany and anything German” (Fort

    I. BIOGRAPHY
Some of the world's greatest artists, like Van Gogh, spent a lifetime in pursuit of their art with little critical, social or financial recognition. Hassam was not one of them. His talent was recognized early. He was feted from his first exhibition early on, collected aggressively and universally recognized as one of America's most significant painters from early in his career right up to his death. As an artist, Frederick Childe Hassam (October 17, 1859 - August 27, 1935) was a premier American Impressionist. He was born Frederick Childe Hassam. He was named "Childe" after the surname of a maternal uncle and the "Hassam" was a distortion of the family name of Horsham, ancestors by that name having come to Boston from Sussex, England. Early in his career he dropped the use of the name Frederick and became simply, Childe Hassam. Listed amongst his ancestors are Nathaniel Hawthorne, the novelist, Richard Morris Hunt, the architect, and William Morris Hunt, the painter.
