Head of a Young Girl c.1895 Charcoal sketch for Alleluia Thomas Cooper Gotch, RI, 1854 -1931 At the instigation of his future wife, fellow artist and Slade student, Caroline Burland Yates, Gotch and Tuke first visited Newlyn in 1879. Tom and Carrie returned to marry at St Peter’s Church in Newlyn in 1881, but then both resumed their studies in Paris at Julian’s and Lauren’s Academies and they did not become resident in Newlyn until 1887. At first Gotch adopted the Newlyners’ ‘rural realist’ style, but in 1891 they wintered in Florence which marked a change in the style of his work to incorporate a ‘joyous sense of colour’. Many of his later works are influenced by the resurgence of interest in mediaevalism and resemble Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Of these, probably his most famous work is Alleluia 1896 (Tate Britain). Gotch frequently used local models in his works, including his own daughter, Phyllis, who was famed in later life for her leading role in stopping the Newlyn ‘slum clearances’. Gotch also modelled for his artist friends, and is the model for King Arthur in Elizabeth Forbes’ illustrated book King Arthur’s Wood. Click to open Frames Version

Victorian Art in Britain Thomas Cooper Gotch Gotch was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire to a prosperous middle class family involved in making shoes and banking. The family were nonconformists. He attended school locally, and entered his father’s business, before taking up the study of art at Heatherley’s Art School in 1876. He then studied briefly in Antwerp, before progressing to the Slade. He married a fellow student Caroline Yates, whom he met in Paris. They had one daughter Phyllis, who was a model in some of her father’s most important pictures. The young family travelled to Australia, where they settled in Melbourne. They returned to England, settling in the artistic colony of Newlyn in 1887. Gotch and his wife lived in Newlyn for the rest of their lives. He painted in the style of the Newlyn School at this time. Thomas Cooper Gotch died suddenly on 1 st May 1931. The reputation of the artist, and the recognition of his work is long overdue for a positive re-assessment.

Gotch, Thomas Cooper (British, 1854-1931) Thomas Cooper Gotch was a painter of portraits, landscape and allegorical and realistic genre. Studied at Heatherley's School; the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Antwerp; the Slade School, and in Paris under JP Laurens. Visited Australia in 1883. Lived first in London, then settled in 1887 at Newlyn, Cornwall, where he belonged to the Newlyn School of plein-air painters. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, and in Munich, Paris and Chicago from 1880. Founder of the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists, 1887 and President 1913-28. Retrospective exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle in 1910. Alleluia was purchased for the Tate Gallery by the Chantrey Bequest in 1896. His earlier work was more naturalistic in the style of the Newlyn School. After his visit to Italy in 1891, he turned to more symbolistic and allegorical subjects, and a more decorative treatment, e.g. as seen in Alleluia . Manuscripts relating to Gotch are held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Thomas Cooper Gotch RBA RI (1854-1931) The painter of children T. C. Gotch was born in Northamptonshire, and followed a fairly conventional art tuition at Heatherleys (1876), the Slade, and in 1880 in Paris, in the studio of J. P. Laurens. There he met a fellow Slade student, Caroline Yates, whom he married in 1881. They visited Australia in 1883, and on return to Britain, Gotch helped in the foundation of the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists - he became the President of that body from 1913-28. The Gotches moved to Newlyn in 1887 - though Gotch was familiar with the area from as long ago as 1871 - and he became one of the colony of artists there. Though Gotch produced many pictures in the Newlyn School manner, and also helped in the foundation of the New English Art Club, his style completely altered following a visit to Italy in 1891-2. Thereafter he produced pictures of children, in a highly decorative and often Symbolist fashion. It is these pictures by which he is best known today. Gotch exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1880 through to 1931. He became RBA in 1885, and RI in 1912. As well as the visit to Australia already mentioned, he also travelled in Denmark (1889) and South Africa (1913), and his work is widely distributed.
