Motherless Child John Haber in New York City Hayden Herrera's Arshile Gorky: His Life and Work Hayden Herrera wrote about Arshile Gorky as long ago as her master's thesis, and she published nearly thirty years ago on his sculptures and self-portraits. As it turns out, she has an even more private stake as well in his life and work. It lies at the heart of a riveting picture of an artistic ego caught up in more than anyone could ever control. As it happens, however, she introduces herself only briefly on the back cover and not at all in the prologue. She defers even the usual courtesies to the back of the book. Her opening, set in 1946, describes instead the start of a descent into illness, isolation, delirium, and death. Three fires The Nation had a severe critic, Clement Greenberg. The next year, Greenberg was to credit Gorky with "one of the best pictures ever done by an American." Gorky bristled even at praise, but he had much the same opinion. Gorky had also found a measure of happiness in the birth of two daughters and his second marriage. Agnes Magruder, the daughter of a proper New England naval officer, delighted in her own rebellious streak. She must have loved the dark-eyed foreigner with heavy brows, impulsive moods, and an often deliberate abuse of English. Yet she also found "the feeling of . . . enormous security." As she put it, "I totally believed in him. He totally believed in himself." Willem de Kooning introduced them at a party in 1941. In barely a month, she had moved into his Union Square studio and apartment. In barely a year, he began reinventing his art, with a fluidity that set the tone for Abstract Expressionism. They married on a trip cross-country. They spent their wedding night outdoors in a sleeping bag. To the end, through two additional marriages, his widow kept the affectionate name that Gorky gave her, Mougoush.

Arshile Gorky's mother, Lady Shushanik der Marderosian, belonged to a distinguished Armenian family that could trace its origins back to the fifth century A.D. She was born in 1880 in Vosdan, a town just to the south of Lake Van in what is now eastern Turkey, in a valley of rushing streams and poplar groves. Just to the east of Vosdan stood the ancestral monastery (or vank) of the der Marderosians. At the time of Gorky's birth, in 1904, nearly 40 of his maternal ancestors lay buried at the vank, under elaborately carved tombstones. In later life he referred to his mother as "the last breath of Van nobility." She was his first teacher, and she seems to have been determined that her son should become an artist.

Poetry Arshile Gorky Exhibit at Fresno Art Museum: A Unique Armenian Artist "Mayrig," by Fresno State student Armine Sargsyan CAITLIN TIFTICK STAFF WRITER From Arthop to cultural festivals, the art scene in Fresno is becoming very popular. More people are becoming interested and exposed to art, which is allowing Fresno to host better art exhibits. The Arshile Gorky Exhibit, on display from April 6 until June 4, 2006, is being showcased at the Fresno Art Museum. This collection includes original works by Arshile Gorky gathered from several prestigious art museums around the world. In addition to the display at the Fresno Art Museum, the inside entry walls at Fresno City Hall hold paintings inspired by Arshile Gorky and painted by Fresno State students in the Art 140 Intermediate Painting course. At the start of my journey to visit both of these exhibits, I asked myself who is Arshile Gorky? What kind of art did he produce? Why is his art so important? Is this a famous artist that I should know? I have little background in art and besides Picasso and van Gogh, I would not recognize too many more artists' names or work. However, I appreciate art and was determined to find out the importance of Arshile Gorky by the end of my artistic journey. My first stop was Fresno City Hall. I walked in the doors and asked the receptionist where the student artwork inspired by Arshile Gorky was located only to find out that the paintings were hanging on the wall right in front of me. There was a small piece of paper explaining how the students created pieces of art based on Gorky's style and a couple of sentences about Arshile Gorky, but nothing that gave a clear picture on the extent of why Arshile Gorky is a renowned artist.

Armenian Painter Arshile Gorky The painter Arshile Gorky (1895-1948) was born Vostanig Adolan in eastern Turkey. Raised in a poor Armenian farming family, Gorky's childhood was reportedly shaped by two disasters: the first being the massacres of 1896, during which his mother and father both lost their first spouses; the second was the genocide of 1915, that affected the entire Armenian population, and which claimed the life of Gorky's mother. Tragically enough, the years in which his art was ascending to its greatest heights were also the darkest in his life. His marriage was disintegrating; he was operated on for colon cancer, and he lost many works in a studio fire. When he then discovered that his wife had cheated on him with another artist - the Chilean painter Matta who was an influence on his best work - the humiliation was too much to bear and he hanged himself.
