Gorky was born in the village of Khorkom near Van, Turkey . It is not known exactly when he was born: it was sometime between 1902 and 1905. (In later years Gorky was always vague about even the date of his birthday, it would change from year to year!) In 1910 his father emigrated to America to avoid the draft, leaving his family behind in the town of Van . Gorky fled Van in during the Armenian Genocide and escaped with his mother and his three sisters into Russian-controlled territory. In the aftermath of the genocide, Gorky's mother died of starvation in Yerevan in 1919. Gorky was reunited with his father when he arrived in America in , aged 16, but they never grew close. At age 31, Gorky married. He changed his name to Arshile Gorky, in the process reinventing his identity (he even told people he was a relative of the Russian writer

Manny Silverman Gallery , West Hollywood) One of the pleasures to be derived from this intimate show of Gorky drawings is to be reacquainted with the tremulous tentativeness that abstract expressionism introduced into drawing and painting in the post-World War II years. Gorky's stature as one of the key progenitors of this style is established, and clearly it was a style whose coincidence with the dominance of Parisian existentialism in intellectual circles reflected the shattering of cultural and moral certainties caused by this cataclysmic war, and the genocidal atrocities associated with it. Contemporary critics quickly capitalized on this connection: agony, anxiety, "authenticity" were the qualities most in demand in the art of the time, and, one might add, in the lives of the artists. Sixteen drawings are on display. About three-quarters of these are from the mid-thirties, and these testify to the enormous, almost stifling influence which Picasso's synthetic cubism exerted on Gorky's generation of European and American artists. To say that some of these drawings are reminiscent of Henry Moore is just another way of saying that in the thirties nobody could get away from Picasso, but also, and this is important in Gorky's case, that there is an inherent preoccupation with the paradoxical rendering of volume in all cubist-derived drawing and painting. A good portion of these cubist drawings are related to Gorky's no-longer-extant Newark airport mural.

    Birth Year : 1905
Death Year : 1948 Country : US Arshile Gorky, a Turkish-Armenian immigrant, born Vosdanig Manoog Adoian, arrived in the United States, in 1920, to join his father and a married sister. Destined to become an artist of great inner vision, whose work was to mark the transition between European Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, Gorky was a lonely, despairing man, whose early work was concerned with absorbing the ideas of Cezanne and Picasso . He was derided by his contemporaries who were seeking individualization instead of their place within the tradition. In 1930, Vosdanig Adoian took the name Arshile Gorky: Gorky, from Russian, meaning "the bitter one", and Arshile, a variation in spelling of Achilles, the hero who sat forlornly in his tent awaiting the recognition due him. A series of tragedies overwhelmed Gorky in the late forties, at the height of his career. The fire that destroyed many of his paintings, the accident that paralyzed his painting arm and finally, the knowledge that he had cancer, led Gorky to take his own life in Sherman, Connecticut on July 21, 1948.

When someting is finished, that means it's dead, doesn't it? (...) The thing to do is always to keep starting to paint, never finishing painting".

    Interaction of Color
, which has since become widely used in the instruction of art students in color. Hofmann had many students who later became well known American artists. Other artists had come from Europe, such as Andre Breton (the Surrealist theorist), Max Ernst, Roberto Matta, Fernand Leger, Piet Mondrian, and many others who had a great influence on artists in America, sharing their Cubist and Surrealist ideas. Artists in the U.S. experienced firsthand these revolutionary ideas of the early 20th century during their association with them. Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, and others had come to America even earlier, in the second and third decades of the century, from Holland, Armenia and Russia, respectively.
These Cubist and Surrealist ideas, and the work of artists such as Picasso, Joan Miro, Andre Masson and Matta, influenced the artists in America, like Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, de Kooning, and many others. These influences eventually resulted in a movement called Abstract Expressionism (also sometimes called Action Painting), which began in the 1940's and was at its peak in the early 1950's. (At the above link, the work of various artists is shown - de Kooning, Pollock, Rothko, Still and others are examples of Abstract Expressionism - scroll down the page to see a good sampling of artists.) Arshile Gorky was an artist who was sort of a bridge between the art of Europe and of America. He was born in Armenia in 1904, and came to America in 1920. He and the young de Kooning, a new immigrant in 1926, became friends and fellow artists, suffering through the lean times of the Depression and the early 1940's, when they were unknown.

    Biography:

Born in Turkish Armenia ad Vosdanig Manoog Adoian, Arshille Gorky escaped the genocide in his country during World War I and settled in the United States at the age of 16. However, his mother was not as lucky and did not survive, her death impacting many of Gorky’s later works. He adopted the last name of Russian writer, Maxim Gorky and attended the Rhode Island School of Design. He originally painted in the style of Miro, Cézanne, and Picasso but later explored biomorphism and Surrealism. At the end of his career, Gorky had established a unique approach to his painting that placed his work in the Abstract Expressionist movement.

In 1925 he moved to New York and changed his name to Arshile Gorky. He entered the Grand Central School of Art in New York as a student but soon became an instructor of drawing; from 1926 to 1931 he was a member of the faculty. Throughout the 1920s Gorky's painting was influenced by Georges Braque , and, above all, Pablo Picasso In 1930 Gorky's work was included in a group show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. During the thirties he associated closely with Stuart Davis, Willem de Kooning , and John Graham; he shared a studio with de Kooning late in the decade. Gorky's first solo show took place at the Mellon Galleries in Philadelphia in 1931. From 1935 to 1937 he worked under the WPA Federal Art Project on murals for Newark Airport. His involvement with the WPA continued into 1941. Gorky's first solo show in New York was held at the Boyer Galleries in 1938. The San Francisco Museum of Art exhibited his work in 1941.
