Oil on canvas (73.03 cm x 91.44 cm). Dallas Museum of Art, Foundation for the Arts Collection, gift of the Adele R. Levy Fund, Inc. "Between me and the sky there was nothing except the high frail roof of the pandanus leaves, where the lizards have their nests," wrote Paul Gauguin in the autobiographical account of his first visit to Tahiti ( ). Under the Pandanus (on this month’s cover of Emerging Infectious Diseases) was painted shortly after Gauguin arrived on the islands in search of his famed reprieve from Western civilization. Like many of his contemporaries, Gauguin became disillusioned with industrialized society whose intense focus on material gain seemed to strip life of its spiritual essence. Crushed under the yoke of familial responsibility, bewildered by the prosaic rules of art dealing, and stifled by societal constraints, Gauguin imagined a life uncluttered by the tedium of survival. He longed for a different world, one with just enough depth to sustain his most basic needs. Flat and two dimensional, this world would be filled with vibrant color and would celebrate the human spirit long lost under oppressive layers of cultural complexity and control.

Gauguin's Art Gallery GAUGUIN'S DISCOVERY OF PRIMITIVE ART In retrospect, it is tempting to ascribe this widening of his horizons to the various voyages and sojourns he made In the tropics in his childhood and youth, before he took up painting in 1873. These included a six-year stay in Lima, Peru, from the age of one to seven, and two voyages to South America as an apprentice and second mate on various merchant ships, between the ages of seventeen and twenty.

Sailing on seven-night voyages from Tahiti, the Paul Gauguin is an extension of the informal, relaxing environment of Polynesia. With American attention to luxury and comfort and a French flair for casual sophistication, the ship radiates warmth, informality, and openness. Here, the constraints of formal wear, tuxedos, and ties are forgotten and the only dress code is relaxation. Excellent wines from France, California, and other vineyard-dotted domains flow freely at lunch and dinner in three restaurants. There is a specially designed, retractable watersports platform, where guests may conveniently launch a kayak, try a little waterskiing, or set out for a scuba diving expedition.

  • Paul Gauguin's erotic life He was cruel to his wife, drove van Gogh mad and delighted in impregnating women. The author of a Gauguin biography talks about why she loves his art anyway. By David Bowman Although Paul Gauguin has been dead for nearly a century, last fall he should have seduced us moderns anew with his translucent paintings. The Art Institute of Chicago had a brilliant show displaying the work of Gauguin and his on-again/off-again buddy Vincent van Gogh. Simultaneously, art historian Nancy Mowll Mathews' "Paul Gauguin: An Erotic Life" was published a scholarly, but breathy, biography that traced the bisexual urges and actual consummations inherent in both Gauguin's art and life, as well as exploring nan Gogh's unconsummated desire for Gauguin. Great art and steamy sex what more could one ask for? But then bin Laden brought down the World Trade Center and the cultural impact of the Chicago show was greatly dampened. This summer, however, Gauguin has a second chance to seduce us at the Metropolitan Art Museum in Manhattan. "Gauguin in New York Collections: The Lure of the Exotic" displays many of the primary paintings of Gauguin's career along with little-seen drawings and sculptures. Because we were interested in the "The Lure of the Erotic," we discussed Gauguin's possibly monstrous sexuality with biographer Nancy Mowll Mathews.

Van Gogh has become a legend. He was a schoolmaster in England, a missionary to the miners in Belgium, and finally, in 1880, an artist. After his contact with other painters in Paris, his style changed radically to the brilliant color and thick, swirling brushwork of his Arles period. A violent quarrel with Paul Gauguin precipitated his first attack of madness in which he cut of part of his ear. Of the hundreds of paintings he created, he was only able to sell one during his lifetime. Source: talariaenterprises.com The relationship between Van Gogh and Gauguin deteriorated throughout December.... Their heated arguments became more and more frequent"electric" as Vincent would describe them. Relations between the pair declined in tandem with Vincent's state of mental health. On 23 December Vincent van Gogh, in an irrational fit of madness, mutilated the lower portion of his left ear. He severed the lobe with a razor, wrapped it in cloth and then took it to a brothel and presented it to one of the women there. Vincent then staggered back to the Yellow House where he collapsed. Paul Gauguin: Letters To His Wife And Friends
By Paul Gauguin. Contributions by Maurice Malingue.
"May the day comeand perhaps soonwhen I can flee to the woods on a South Sea island and live there in ecstasy, in peace and for art," Gauguin wrote to his wife, Mette, in 1890. As both art history and enduring legend have shown, Gauguin's life in the South Seas was anything but ecstatic or peaceful, even as he created some of the most revolutionary and iconic objects of his time. This book, to date the most comprehensive volume of the painter's letters to be published, offers an uncensored glimpse into Gauguin's life, from his days as a young newlywed reporting on the birth of his first child, through his early developments as an artist and finally throughout the extraordinary adventure of his years in Tahiti and the Marquesas. Gauguin's writings, from Noa Noa to his Intimate Journals , have proven him a talented, uninhibited literary stylist. Nowhere is this more evident than in these letters to many of his closest associates and, above all, to Mette, for whom he detailed his plans, described artworks in progress, and gave running accounts of his life and states of mind on distant shores. Published to coincide with the centennial of Gauguin's death and with a major international exhibition
