Gauguin, Paul (June 7, 1848, Paris - May 8, 1903, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia), one of the leading French painters of the Postimpressionism period, whose development of a conceptual method of representation was a decisive step for 20th-century art. After spending a short period with Vincent van Gogh in Arles (1888), Gauguin increasingly abandoned imitative art for expressiveness through color. From 1891 he lived and worked in Tahiti and elsewhere in the South Pacific. Gauguin said himself about his drawings that "It always seems to me that something is missing: the color ." Gauguin's style was characterized by the use of large flat areas of non-naturalistic color. Gauguin's bold experiments in coloring led directly to the 20th-century Fauvist style in modern art. His strong modeling influenced the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch and the later expressionist school. Gauguin's painting technique was quite different from both that of the Impressionists, who applied their colors in small, opaque dabs, and that of Van Gogh, who used thick impastos and bold, expressionistic brushstrokes. Gauguin's paintings in the main are characterized by broad areas of color, relatively flat but nevertheless containing subtle variations of hue that give them a rich glow. He often added wax to his paints to give them extra smoothness and flow. Sometimes parts of backgrounds were applied with a palette knife and then overlaid with thin, translucent paint put on with a brush.

Paul Gauguin
Birth Year : 1848 Death Year : 1903 Country : France Paul Gauguin, the most exotic of the Post-Impressionists, was born in Paris. The son of a French journalist and a Peruvian woman, Gauguin spent his early childhood in Peru, attended a boarding school in France, and was a merchant seaman before becoming a stockbroker's assistant in 1871. At first merely an occasional painter Gauguin frequented the Nouvelle Athenes Caf© where he met Pissarro and the Impressionists, whose works he purchased. He had married in 1873, and so it was not until ten years later that Gauguin decided to give up the business world and devote himself to the artistic. After a period in Rouen where he stayed with

A restless man, he traveled and worked in the French regions of Brittany and Provence as well as the South and Central Americas. In 1891, he moved to the French colony of Tahiti in search of "ecstasy, calm, and art." He spent all but two of the remaining years of his life in the South Seas. When he returned to France in 1893, he spent most of his time in Paris promoting his work and writing and illustrating Noa Noa, a fictionalized account of his Tahitian experience . Day of the Gods (Mahana No Atua), one of the very few paintings Gauguin completed during this period, is closely related to his literary project. Set in a Tahitian landscape by the sea, the composition Borobudur (Java) Postimpressionist style , defined by a decreasing tendency to depict real objects and the expressive use of flat, curving shapes of brilliant color, influenced many abstract painters of the early 20th century. back to top

The Religious Affiliation of Painter
Paul Gauguin
Paul Gauguin is regarded as one of the greatest artists in modern history. Paul Gauguin was born in Paris, France. Gauguin was raised as a Catholic and attended Catholic schools while growing up. This Catholic upbringing left a deep imprint of Catholicism on him. This may have contributed to his deep interest in religous subjects as an adult. (Source: David Sweetman, Paul Gauguin: A Life As an adult, Paul Gauguin was interested in and participated in a number of eclectic religious trends popular among intellectuals and artists of his time, including Spiritualism, the occult, Theosophy and Rosicrucianism. Eventually Gauguin became a convert to Theosophy and a member of the Theosophical Society. Gauguin "surrendered completely" to this new religion organized by Madame Blavatsky. Theosophy united elements of many different major world religions (particularly Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism) along with many esoteric religious traditions of the era, including Spiritualism. Gauguin remained a devout Theosophist for about twenty years until the end of his life. (Source: Sweetman, pages 230-233) After his conversion to Theosophy, Paul Gauguin's art was strongly influenced by his Theosophist beliefs. Gauguin's art became the "fullest expression" of his religious leader Paul Serusier's sermons (Sweetman, page 233).

After a successful stint as a stockbroker, Gaugin left his wife and five children to pursue a life devoted to art. Inspired by Impressionism, Gauguin developed a unique style of Symbolism that incorporated elements from primitive Polynesian culture, and spent several years in Tahiti, developing an "untamed" aesthetic. With the artist Emile Bernard, Gauguin invented a method of rendering pictoral space that uses large patches of flat color and thick line; these techniques influenced early 20th-century artists. Gauguin's works include Vision after the Sermon: Jacob Wrestling with the Angel (1888), Mahana no atua (Day of the God) (1814), and Savage Tales (1902).

Despite the fact the works had been submitted after the official deadline, the organizers of the event were convinced by his talent and decided to show it anyway. Critical response was positive, and Gauguin joined the Impressionist fold. By the eighth Impressionist exhibition, however, critical assessment of Paul Gauguin's work had turned sour. In reviews of the final exhibition, critics dismissed his work as classic Impressionism, and in reaction, Gauguin chose imagination and memory as central forces in his art.

Noa Noa
by Paul Gauguin
Translated by O. F. Theis
Contents
Start Reading When I was studying ethnography at UCLA, the instructors spent a lot of time drumming into us the necessity of being a detached observer. "Going native" was considered the ultimate slur against a fellow anthropologist. And yet, some of the best information that we have about some societies comes from travelers who have "gone native" in a big way. Case in point, the French artist Paul Gauguin, and his luminous description of a season in Tahiti in 1891. This slight travelogue of an artists' journey into the heart of the primitive both enthralls and informs. Written as a potboiler after he returned to France, there are two distinct parts of this book. The first part is an extended narrative of Gauguin's entry into the slow rhythms of Polynesian village life. Late in the book we hit folklore paydirt. In an extended passage, Gauguin's Tahitian child-concubine relates to him the Tahitian cosmogony, with a number of myths, legendary genealogies, ethnoastronomy, and a deluge story. Gauguin remarks on how advanced the Polynesian lore seems, particularly their belief in evolutionary processes and knowledge of the spherical nature of the Earth. This is consistent with the Hawaiian Kumulipo . While not a scholarly dissertation by any means, this portion is a well written discussion of Tahitian beliefs.

Eug¨ne Henri Paul Gauguin was born in Paris into a liberal middle-class family. After an adventurous early life, including a four-year stay in Peru with his family and a stint in the French merchant marine, he became a successful Parisian stockbroker, settling into a comfortable bourgeois existence with his wife and five children. In 1874, after meeting the artist Camille Pissarro and viewing the first impressionist exhibition, he became a collector and amateur painter. He exhibited with the impressionists in 1876, 1880, 1881, 1882, and 1886. In 1883 he gave up his secure existence to devote himself to painting; his wife and children, without adequate subsistence, were forced to return to her family. From 1886 to 1891 Gauguin lived mainly in rural Brittany (except for a trip to Panama and Martinique from 1887 to 1888), where he was the center of a small group of experimental painters known as the school of Pont-Aven. Under the influence of the painter ‰mile Bernard, Gauguin turned away from
