Synopsis
The perennially popular paintings of Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) have long been recognised as embodying the sophistication and elegance of Georgian England. The inventiveness and complexity of his techniques remain as dazzling today as they were to his contemporaries. He was among the first British artists to show his work in public exhibitions, and throughout his life he was committed to creating a modern art with modern subjects.
Produced alongside Tate Britain's major Gainsborough exhibition, this film explores his portraits and his landscapes as well as the sentimental images of children and the poor which seem so alien to sensibilities now. Detailed interviews with the exhibition's curators Michael Rosenthal and Martin Myrone celebrate Gainsborough's achievements at the same time as outlining the historical and social contexts of his work.

Gainsborough was born in 1727 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England. His father was a schoolteacher involved with the wool trade. At the age of fourteen he impressed his father with his pencilling skills so that he let him go to London to study art in 1740. Thomas Gainsborough
Gainsborough, Thomas was English Rococo / Romantic painter. He was one of the most famous portrait and landscape painters, and fancy pictures, of 18th century Britain.
Gainsborough was born in 1727 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England. His father was a schoolteacher involved with the wool trade. At the age of fourteen Gainsborough impressed his father with his pencilling skills so that he let him go to London to study art in 1740. In London he first trained under engraver Hubert Gravelot but eventually became associated with William Hogarth and his school. One of his mentors was Francis Hayman.
In the 1740s, Gainsborough married Margaret Burr. The artist's work, then mainly composed of landscape paintings, was not selling very well. He returned to Sudbury in 1748-1749 and concentrated on the painting of portraits.
Gainsborough's best known painting of his Suffolk period was "Mr and Mrs Andrews". He and his family moved to Ipswich and commissions for personal portraits increased. In 1759, Gainsborough with family moved to Bath. There, he studied portraits by van Dyck and was eventually able to attract a better-paying high society clientele. In 1761, he began to send work to the Society of Arts exhibition in London and to the Royal Academy's annual exhibitions. He attracted attention and acquired a national reputation. He was invited to become one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1769.
In 1774, Gainsborough with family moved to London. After exhibiting again his paintings and portraits of contemporary celebrities at the Royal Academy and painting the portraits of King George III and his queen he received many royal commissions. This gave him some influence with the Academy and allowed him to dictate the manner in which he wished his work to be exhibited. In 1784, royal painter Allan Ramsay died and the King was obliged to give the job to Gainsborough's rival, Joshua Reynolds. But Gainsborough remained the Royal Family's favorite painter.

Gainsborough, Thomas
(b. 1727, Sudbury, d. 1788, London) English portrait and landscape painter, the most versatile English painter of the 18th century. Some of his early portraits show the sitters grouped in a landscape (Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, c. 1750). As he became famous and his sitters fashionable, he adopted a more formal manner that owed something to Anthony Van Dyck (The Blue Boy, c. 1770). His landscapes are of idyllic scenes. During his last years he also painted seascapes and idealized full-size pictures of rustics and country children.
Early life and Suffolk period
Gainsborough was the youngest son of John Gainsborough, a maker of woolen goods. When he was 13, he persuaded his father to send him to London to study on the strength of his promise at landscape. He worked as an assistant to Hubert Gravelot, a French painter and engraver and an important figure in London art circles at the time. From him Gainsborough learned something of the French Rococo idiom, which had a considerable influence on the development of his style. In 1746 in London he married Margaret Burr, the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Beaufort. Soon afterward he returned to Suffolk and settled in Ipswich in 1752; his daughters Mary and Margaret were born in 1748 and 1752, respectively. In Ipswich Gainsborough met his first biographer, Philip Thicknesse. He early acquired some reputation as a portrait and landscape painter and made an adequate living.
