Notes on the painter thomas gainsborough, in context of pages on mainly Victorian art.

Thomas Gainsborough RA (1727-1788)
Gainsborough is credited as being the founder of the true English School of painting. Born in Sudbury, he came to London aged 14 to pursue art, studying first under the engraver Gravelot, and then under the painter Francis Hayman. During this period, he copied diligently from Dutch paintings, an influence discernible in some of his paintings. After failing to do well as a painter in London, he returned to Sudbury, marrying Miss Francis Burr, who had modelled for him, and then settling in Ipswich in 1746. However, in 1760 they moved to Bath, favoured at the time by fashionable portait painters. Then, in 1774, his reputation now high, they went to live in Pall Mall, London. Gainsborough excelled in both landscape (where he was considered to rival Richard Wilson ) and in portraiture, where he rivalled Reynolds . He was a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768, and through to 1783 he showed nearly a hundred pictures there, until in 1784 he disputed with the Academy over the hanging of one of his pictures (not the last to have such a disagreement!) and ceased to exhibit there. After his death, Reynolds, President of the Academy, devoted one of his famous discourses to the 'Character of Gainsborough'. Gainsborough's works are well distributed, and can be seen in various provincial museums as well as the largest centres. In the

In his portrait of his two daughters, Margaret and Mary Chasing a Butterfly , Gainsborough has produced one of his most natural and lyrical pictures. English landscape and portrait painter. In 1760 he settled in Bath, where his elegant and subtly characterized society portraits brought great success. In 1774 he went to London, becoming one of the original members of the Royal Academy and the principal rival of Joshua Reynolds. He was one of the first British artists to follow the Dutch example in painting realistic landscapes rather than imaginative Italianate scenery, as in Mr and Mrs Andrews The Morning Walk (National Gallery) show his sense of character and the elegance of his mature work.

From Richard Leppert we learn that Ann Ford . . . was an accomplished musician, who sang and played the English guitar, the Viola da Gamba and the musical glasses . . . but she was allowed by her father to give concerts solely at home. When she was twenty-three he had her arrested and confined to prevent her from performing in public. She later made a second and ultimately successful attempt to give a concert, but not before being arrested again.(5)

      Thomas Gainsborough
Gainsborough, Thomas (1727-88). English painter of portraits, landscapes, and fancy pictures, one of the most individual geniuses in British art.
He was born at Sudbury, Soffolk, and went to London in about 1740, probably studying with the French engraver Gravelot. He returned to Sudbury in 1748 and in 1752 he set up as a portrait painter at Ipswitch. His work at this time consisted mainly of heads and half-length, but he also painted some small portrait groups in landscape settings which are the most lyrical of all English conversation pieces (Heneage Lloyd and his Sister, Fitzwilliam, Cambridge). His patrons were the merchants of the town and the neighboring squires, but when in 1759 he moved to Bath, his new sitters were members of Society, and he developed a free and elegant mode of painting seen at its most characteristic in full-length portraits (Mary, Countess Howe, Kenwood House, London, c.1763-64).
In 1768 he was elected a foundation member of the Royal Academy, and in 1774 he moved permanently to London. Here he further developed the personal style he had evolved at Bath, working with light and rapid brush-strokes and delicate and evanescent colors. He became a favorite painter of the Royal Family, even though his rival Reynolds was appointed King's Principal Painter.
