Executive summary: Portrait and landscape painter English painter, one of the greatest masters of the English school in portraiture, and only less so in landscape, was born at Sudbury, Suffolk, in the spring of 1727. His father, who carried on the business of a woollen crape-maker in that town, was of a respectable character and family, and was noted for his skill in fencing; his mother excelled in flower-painting, and encouraged her son in the use of the pencil. There were nine children of the marriage, two of the painter's brothers being of a very ingenious turn. Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788)
Gainsborough was one of the great masters of 18th century painting in Britain, best known for his portraits. Thomas Gainsborough was born in May 1727 in Sudbury, Suffolk, the son of a cloth merchant. He showed artistic skills at an early age. When he was 13 he was sent to London to study drawing and etching with the French engraver Hubert Gravelot. Gravelot had been a pupil of the great French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau, whose influence on Gainsborough was strong. In London, Gainsborough also associated with English painters William Hogarth and Francis Hayman. Around 1749, Gainsborough returned to Suffolk, where he lived and worked for a decade. His portraits were mainly of local gentry and merchants. In 1746, he married Margaret Burr and they had two daughters.

The painting of The Blue Boy is perhaps the most well known works by Gainsborough (GAINZ burro). It is thought that it is a picture of Jonathan Buttall, who was the son of a wealthy hardware merchant. It is painted with oil paints on a canvas and is quite large; 48 inches wide and 70 inches tall. He painted it over another painting that he had already started to paint.
Gainsborough was born in England and began drawing when he was very young. He started taking lessons at the age of 15.
Sarah Siddons
was a famous actress during the time that she lived. Gainsborough (GAINZ burro) was one of the artists she commissioned to paint her portrait. It is said that he trouble getting her nose to look just right.
He liked to paint landscapes and portraits of people. He painted many pictures in his lifetime; more than 500 paintings. About 200 of these were paintings of people. He became wealthy because the rich people wanted him to paint pictures of their families.

Back to Rococo Style Thomas Gainsborough was a British painter, famed for his portraits of fashionable society in the late 18th century and for his landscapes of the English countryside. He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, and received his artistic training at an early age, probably from the painters Francis Wynantz, Charles Jervas, and Francis Hayman, all of whom were in Suffolk in the 1730s. In about 1740 Gainsborough went to study in London with the noted French draughtsman and engraver Hubert-Francois Gravelot, through whom he was influenced by the style of the famous French Rococo painter Antoine Watteau. One of Gainsborough’s celebrated early works is his portrait of Mr. and Mrs Andrews (c. 1748-1750, National Gallery, London), featuring a wealthy Suffolk landowner and his wife against the background of their estate.
  • Nicaragua 1978. Mr. and Mrs. Andrews.
His other accomplished portraits of this period include that of John Plampin (1753, National Gallery, London), who is shown reclining on a mound with a landscape in the background a pose derived from Watteau’s portraits. In 1759 Gainsborough moved to Bath, the fashionable spa town where there were greater opportunities for earning a living as a portrait painter. Around the same time he also viewed portraits by Anthony van Dyck at Wilton House in Wiltshire, which were to have a major influence on his work.
