Gainsborough was born in Sudbury Suffolk England . His father was a weaver involved with the wool trade. In those years he contributed to the decoration of what is now the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children and the supper boxes at Vauxhall Gardens In the 1740s, Gainsborough married Margaret Burr, an illegitimate daughter of the

In 1745 Gainsborough married Margaret Burr, the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Beaufort, and established himself as a painter at Ipswich. He developed the subject-matter of small portra it groups, set in a realistic landscape. His most famous painting of this period is Mr and Mrs Andrews
In 1774 Gainsborough moved to London where he became a foundation member of the Royal Academy . However, had several disagreements with the Academy about the selection of his paintings and refused to exhibit there after 1784.

Biography:

Thomas Gainsborough was born in Suffolk, with recognizable talent even as a child. At 13, his family sent him to study in London under French artist Hubert Gravelot. In 1745, Gainsborough attempted to make a living selling his landscapes, but his business ventures soon failed and he returned to his birthplace. He then moved to Bath, abandoning his preferred landscape subjects for the more lucrative career of a portrait artist. In 1768, Gainsborough’s reputation earned him a spot as one of the founders of the Royal Academy in London.

Went to the Clark on Sunday and saw a selection of work from the recently donated Manton Collection ; a nice collection of British work for this mostly French museum. The museum is exhibiting drawings and paintings by Constable (a bunch), Turner Samuel Palmer (only one, but nice to see), Gainsborough , and others - only a part of the entire donation.
I've been into Gainsborough ever since reading Chris Ashley's EXCELLENT post on Gainsborough's brushtrokes ... it was so good to see that, and think about that painting in relation to the Katherine Bernhardt painting posted on PaintersNYC , at about the same time.
These frames are fantastic... I was really enjoying the frames on this visit, because I was just talking about frames the other day (after seeing Zach Harris' show)
Thomas Gainsborough, Viscount Hampden , 1780 - This portrait is not in the Manton exhibition, it was already at the Clark, on display upstairs along with one other (an earlier one). This painting, if you ever get to the Clark, needs to be seen.
PLUS: for Barnaby This is the giant Bouguereau that, for years and years, hung in the lobby... and is now moved upstairs, hanging near another Bouguereau.

British painter. At 13 he left his native Suffolk to study in London. By c. 1750, back in Suffolk, he had established a reputation in portraiture and landscape painting. He painted landscapes for pleasure; portraiture was his profession. In 1759 he moved to the fashionable spa of Bath, where his works would be seen by a wider and wealthier public. In 1768 he became a founding member of the Royal Academy of Art. He developed an elegant, formal portrait style inspired by Anthony Van Dyck , whose influence can be seen in such portraits as his famous Blue Boy (1770). In 1774 he moved to London and became a favourite of the royal family, preferred above the official court painter, Joshua Reynolds . His love of landscape came from studying 17th-century Dutch artists and later Peter Paul Rubens , whose influence is evident in The Watering Place (1777). His output was prodigious; he produced many landscape drawings in various media, and in his later years he also created images of seascapes, pastoral subjects, and children.

    Birth Year : 1727
Death Year : 1788 Country : United Kingdom Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, Suffolk. His parents sent him to London when he was fourteen and he spent five years studying art with Hayman, an English designer and portraitist, and with Gravelot, a French illustrator and engraver. Gainsborough married an heiress when he was nineteen and the couple lived first in Ipswich and then in Bath. Though Gainsborough painted portraits of the landed gentry and nobility to assure himself of his livelihood, his real passion was for landscapes. He frequently managed to combine the two types of art with more than felicitous effects: his portraits lost some of their stiffness of figure because of the natural settings in which they blend so easily. Gainsborough's early familiarity with the great country houses where so much of their work was collected, enabled him to see and to study the works of such masters as Watteau Rubens , and Van Dyck . If the placing and positioning of Gainsborough's figures show the influence of Watteau 's compostition, and the fluid techniques he used are said to stem from

    Gainsborough, Thomas
Gainsborough, Thomas (1727-88). English painter of portraits, landscapes, and fancy pictures, one of the most individual geniuses in British art. He was born at Sudbury, Soffolk, and went to London in about 1740, probably studying with the French engraver Gravelot. He returned to Sudbury in 1748 and in 1752 he set up as a portrait painter at Ipswitch. His work at this time consisted mainly of heads and half-length, but he also painted some small portrait groups in landscape settings which are the most lyrical of all English conversation pieces ( Heneage Lloyd and his Sister , Fitzwilliam, Cambridge). His patrons were the merchants of the town and the neighboring squires, but when in 1759 he moved to Bath, his new sitters were members of Society, and he developed a free and elegant mode of painting seen at its most characteristic in full-length portraits ( Mary, Countess Howe , Kenwood House, London, c.1763-64). In 1768 he was elected a foundation member of the Royal Academy, and in 1774 he moved permanently to London. Here he further developed the personal style he had evolved at Bath, working with light and rapid brush-strokes and delicate and evanescent colors. He became a favorite painter of the Royal Family, even though his rival Reynolds was appointed King's Principal Painter. Gainsborough sometimes said that while portraiture was his profession landscape painting was his pleasure, and he continued to paint landscapes long after he had left a country neighborhood. He produced many landscape drawings, some in pencil, some in charcoal and chalk, and he occasionally made drawings which he varnished. He also, in later years, painted fancy pictures of pastoral subjects (

Thomas Gainsborough is an English landscape and portrait painter, one of the great English masters. He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk in the family of a clothier. He showed an aptitude for drawing early and first was encouraged by his mother, who was a woman of well-cultivated mind and excelled in flower-painting. He used to spend a lot of time outdoors, drawing. In 1740, at the age of 13 he was sent to London to study art. He spent several years working in the studios of different artists, one of whom was Hubert Gravelot, a draughtsman and engraver, another one was a scene-painter and illustrator Francis Hayman.
In 1748 Gainsborough presented The Charterhouse (1748) to the Foundling Hospital, it was a way for the artist to show one of his works, because at that time there were no other possibilities for young artists. In 1746 Gainsborough married Margaret Burr Continued...

The only truly original landscape artist of the period was also one of its greatest portrait painters, Thomas Gainsborough. No other painter applied himself so successfully to both branches of art, though he said that he preferred landscape and only painted portraits for a living. He was the kind of painter who paints as if by nature. His works have neither the solidity nor the eclectic resourcefulness of Reynolds, and their substance seems often to depend simply on the fluent and lyrical movement of his brush. Unimpressed by the classical masters (he never went to Italy), he turned to two other sources nearer at hand: Dutch landscapes, which were closely attuned to his native East Anglia, and French sensibility, acquired in the circle of Hayman. The first, combined with the detailed observation of nature, can be seen in his early 'Landscape with a Cornfield', the second in more fanciful works like the 'Landscape with Gypsies'. After he moved to Bath in 1759, and subsequently to London in 1774, the influence of

    Thomas Gainsborough
Thomas Gainsborough was born in 1727, the son of John Gainsborough, a cloth merchant living in Sudbury, Suffolk. It was not long before the younger Gainsborough showed a marked talent for art, and at the tender age of 13 he was sent to London to study. For the next 8 years Gainsborough studied in London under the engraver Gravelot. He also became familiar with the Flemish style of painting which was then very popular with art dealers.
