John Henry Fuseli
Birth Year : 1741 Death Year : 1825 Country : Switzerland Henry Fuseli was Swiss by birth but worked in England for many years, becoming a Royal Academician in 1790. Born F¼ssli-a name which he later Italianized into its present version-he became a clergyman (ordained in 1761) at the insistence of his father, who was a painter. Fuseli revolted against this enforced career and, in 1763, began studying art in Berlin before moving to England where he worked as an engraver and translator. It was in England that he met Sir Joshua Reynolds , who encouraged his artistic career. In 1770 Fuseli went to Rome where he spent the next eight years copying the works of his idol

HENRY FUSELI – Artist of Nightmare An artist of the early Romantic period, who absorbed such ideas and assiduously cultivated fear, was the Swiss-born Henry Fuseli. He chose subjects like Satan bridging Chaos, a Shepherd's Dream, Fairies from Shakespeare and Hamlet's Ghost. Benjamin Haydon (1853) praised the latter as "the finest conception of a ghost there ever was painted... There it quivered with martial stride, pointing to a place of meeting with Hamlet; and round its visored head was a halo of light that looked sulphurous, and made one feel as if one actually smelt hell, burning, cindery, and suffocating. The dim moon glittered behind; the sea roared in the distance, as if agitated by the presence of a supernatural spirit; and the ghost looked at Hamlet, with eyes that glared like the light in the eyes of lion, which is savagely growling over his bloody food." Fuseli, unlike his compositions, was not impressive to look at. What Haydon saw was "a little white-headed lion-faced man in an old flannel dressing-gown tied around his waist with a piece of rope and upon his head the bottom of Mrs Fuseli's work-basket." Today his most-reproduced work is The Nightmare (1782) which was painted after he had dreamed that he had made love to his unrequited sweetheart. It shows a young woman sleeping, her breast and legs dramatically thrust upwards, and the head of a phantom horse, with icy wisps of mane, rising above the bed. Perched on the woman's breast is a small hairy devil, impishly sinister. The horses's eyes bulge and its neck seems to strain to burst through the rent in the curtains and take possession of the world of shapes and solids. Rendered in apparitional whites and dusky-browns, it is a shudderingly effective visual landmark.

UXL Newsmakers Henry Fuseli The Swiss painter Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) depicted the marvelous, the megalomaniac, supernatural horror, the irrational, the erotic, and the macabre, expressing violently romantic attitudes in a severe neoclassic style. Henry Fuseli was the first artist to command the epic literature and heroic history of northern Europe as well as the Mediterranean countries, and by his wide reading and close study of the Old Masters he equipped himself to extend the scope of history painting far beyond the traditional limits of the Bible and classical antiquity. In his speculative boldness he was a child of the Enlightenment, but he was also a fierce critic of sterile rationalism and preached the gospel of the imagination with religious fervor.

Home Henry Fuseli and the British MICHAEL DUNN The Fuseli of the recent exhibition at the Auckland City Art Gallery is the private Fuseli - the artist of the sketches and not the Royal Academy exhibitor of history paintings in oils on large canvases. The big oil paintings devoted to subjects from Milton and Shakespeare for example, made his eighteenth century reputation as a serious artist: but it is his small drawings, unexhibited in his lifetime, that attract interest today. In these the Swiss artist was able to work rapidly, with great technical fluency, and to indulge his obsessive fantasies as they streamed from his subconscious. Dreams and nightmares, he once wrote, were among the most unexplored areas of art. At a time when the beauty of classical art was very much in vogue, Fuseli poured scorn on any servile copying of the antique. He borrowed ideas from other artists quite blatantly; and was not too worried whether the artist was Greek, Roman, or English like his then despised friend William Blake, whom, he once said, was 'damned good to steal from'.
