He was born in Z¼rich Switzerland , the second of eighteen children. His father was Johann Caspar F¼ssli , a painter of portraits and landscapes, and author of Lives of the Helvetic Painters . He intended Henry for the church, and sent him to the Caroline college of Zurich, where he received an excellent classical education. One of his schoolmates there was Johann Kaspar Lavater , with whom he became close friends. Horseman attacked by a giant snake, c. 1800. Eventually, he became acquainted with Sir Joshua Reynolds , to whom he showed his drawings. Following Sir Joshua's advice he devoted himself wholly to art. In

Henry Fuseli Swiss painter, poet, critic, and teacher, a fervent admirer of Shakespeare, who spent most of his active career in England. Fuseli has often been regarded as a forerunner of the Romantic art movement and a precursor of Symbolism and Surrealism. His most famous painting is The Nightmare (1781), in which an ape-like goblin sits on a young woman, who is sleeping in a strained posture. The only man that ever I knew

(William Blake's tribute to Fuseli) The Painter in Conversation with Johann Jakob Bodmer Fuseli was ordained a Zwinglian clergyman in 1761. Next year, in consequence of a pamphlet, in which he attacked Felix Grebel, the corrupted administration of a magistrate, he had to leave Zurich. Fuseli's fellow-polemicist, the theologian Johann Casper Lavater, later descibed his energetic friend: "His spirits are hurricane, his servants flames of fire. He goes on the wings of the wind. His laugh is the mockery of Hell, and his love a murderous lightning flash." Fuseli traveled through Germany, and spent then much time in Berlin. There worked on a German translation of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's Letters , which was published in 1763. Lavater and Fuseli remained friends. Fuseli's translation of Lavater's

Henry Fuseli was born in Zurich, Switzerland. Although his father was an amateur painter, Fuseli originally joined the seminary and was ordained as a minister in the Swiss Reformed Church in 1761. Under the encouragement of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Fuseli began to paint in 1768, spending eight years in Italy admiring the religious work of Michelangelo. Fuseli moved to London in 1778, exhibiting his most famous painting, The Nightmare at the Royal Academy in 1782. In Fuseli’s work he tended to favor dramatic scenes of terror, imagination, and eroticism.

    Birth Year : 1741
Death Year : 1825 Country : Switzerland Henry Fuseli was Swiss by birth but worked in England for many years, becoming a Royal Academician in 1790. Born Füssli-a name which he later Italianized into its present version-he became a clergyman (ordained in 1761) at the insistence of his father, who was a painter. Fuseli revolted against this enforced career and, in 1763, began studying art in Berlin before moving to England where he worked as an engraver and translator. It was in England that he met Sir Joshua Reynolds , who encouraged his artistic career. In 1770 Fuseli went to Rome where he spent the next eight years copying the works of his idol, Michelangelo . After his return to England he soon became well known for his exotic and Romantic scenes, painted in a pseudo-mannerist style, in which his imaginative power far outstripped his artistic ability. This is one of forty paintings Fuseli painted and then exhibited in London in 1799, which depict episodes in the life of the poet Milton. The incident depicted is from his Milton's early life, based on a romantic myth which describes how Milton, asleep under a tree, was observed by an Italian lady. Moved by Milton's beauty she wrote some lines of poetry and placed them in his hand. It has been suggested that it is not a literal transcription of this story but more likely refers to poetic inspiration by the muse.

Fuseli, Henry (Johann Heinrich Füssli) (1741-1825). Swiss-born painter, draughtsman, and writer on art, active mainly in England, where he was one of the outstanding figures of the Romantic movement. He was the son of a portrait painter, Johann Caspar Füssli (1707-82), but he originally trained as a priest; he took holy orders in 1761, but never practised. In 1765 he came to London at the suggestion of the British Ambassador in Berlin, who had been impressed by his drawings. Reynolds encouraged him to tape up painting, and he spent the years 1770-78 in Italy, engrossed in the study of Michelangelo , whose elevated style he sought to emulate for the rest of his life. On his return he exhibited highly imaginative works such as The Nightmare (Detroit Institute of Arts, 1781), the picture that secured his reputation when it was shown at the Royal Academy in 1782 (there is another version in the Goethe-museum, Frankfurt). An unforgettable image of a woman in the throes of a violently erotic dream, this painting shows how far ahead of his time Fuseli was in exploring the murky areas of the psyche where sex and fear meet. His fascination with the horrifying and fastastic also comes out in many of his literary subjects, which formed a major part of his output; he painted several works for Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, and in 1799 he followed this example by opening a Milton Gallery in Pall Mall with an exhibition of forty-seven of his own paintings. Fusely was a much respected and influential figure in his lifetime, but his work was generally neglected for about a century after his death until the

He later painted five pictures for Woodmason's Irish Gallery (1793), an enterprise designed to emulate in Dublin the success of Boydell's exhibition in London. Fuseli turned often to Shakespeare for his inspiration; , the catalogue of the 1997 exhibition of Fuseli's Shakespeare paintings in Parma, Italy, lists 85 paintings, drawings, sketches and engravings drawn from the plays. After a prolific and successful career as an artist in England, he died in 1825. Fuseli admired the Romantic poets, and many of his illustrations for Shakespeare and Miltonas well as a number of other poets and writersreveal his love for the grotesque, the sublime, and the fantastic. He is best remembered for his influential painting The Nightmare and his fascination with the realm of the dream-world in his works.

At the age of 20, Henry Fuseli was ordained as a pastor, but a disagreement with his father prompted him to leave Switzerland and the Church. He traveled throughout Europe, studying in Germany and Italy, where he was influenced by Michelangelo , before arriving in London. He was soon accepted into the London art-world and became a member of the Royal Academy in 1790. Despite frequent visits to Europe, including to his native Switzerland, he always returned to London. Fuseli's enigmatic, dreamlike Nightmare was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1790, bringing him wide public acclaim and instant fame. Henry Fuseli (1741-1825)
Born Johann Heinrich F¼ssli, Swiss history painter and writer, based permanently in England from 1779. Fuseli was born in Zurich into a family of painters and art historians. Although his siblings pursued artistic careers, he was persuaded to study theology. He was trained as a Zwinglian (Protestant) priest in Zurich, but after protesting against the corruption of a local politician was advised to leave Switzerland. Fuseli travelled around Germany in 1763-4, before moving to London. Here he worked as a translator, writer and illustrator, gaining a reputation as a passionate follower of the radical philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78). By 1770 he had raised the funds to travel to Italy to pursue a career as a painter. He spent the years 1770-78 in Rome, at the heart of a dynamic international community of younger artists. He continued to work until the end, and attracted the support of a few wealthy collectors. Fuseli’s reputation as a painter in oils was uneven, and plummeted after his death. His drawings, however, still attracted admiration and his eccentricities became the stuff of legend. His work was reappraised in Switzerland and then in Britain in the early twentieth century, when it was seen as anticipating the Surrealist and Expressionist tendencies within modern art.
