Fra Angelico
Fra Angelico was born near Florence and named Guido di Piero. When he became a Dominican friar in his early twenties, he took the name Fra Giovanni, meaning Brother John. By then, he was already an accomplished artist. At his friary, he created a workshop for the production of paintings on every scale, from miniatures to ornate altarpieces. It is said Fra Angelico left his works just as he first painted them, never going back to retouch or repaint, because he believed his brushstrokes were guided by God. After he died, people called him Fra Angelico because both his life and his art were so angelic. info@birdcagepress.com

Beato (Fra Giovanni da Fiesole) Angelico
    Birth Year : 1400
Death Year : 1455 Country : Italy sacra conversazione In works of the early 1440's, a realistic and exciting sense of panoramic space pervades Angelico's pictures, as do delicate and subtle uses of color to express distance and variation in light. His best known and perhaps most thoroughly timeless work is from the series of frescoes he painted in S. Marco monastery, mainly in the early 1440's. Some of those frescoes-the "Annunciation", for example-were painted in the public spaces, as aids to group devotion; others were painted in private cells. In 1447, having been called to Rome, Angelico and his workshop assistants made a richer and even more ambitious set of frescoes for walls and ceilings in the private chapel of Pope Nicholas V. Having served as Prior of S. Domenico in Fiesole, Angelico returned to Rome, where he died. Fra Angelico
Fra Angelico ("Brother Angel"), born Guido di Pietro near Castello di Vicchio in Tuscany, 1387 and died at Rome, 1455. He was a famous Italian painter of the early Renaissance Florentine School.
He was known to his peers as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole and earned his nickname through his unusually pious nature. He was called Angelico (Italian for "angelic") and Beato (Italian for "blessed") because the paintings he did were of calm, religious subjects and because of his extraordinary personal piety.
He is documented as a painter in Florence during the period 1417-1418 and took his vows as a Dominican monk in nearby Fiesole sometime between 1418 and about 1421.Considering the number of documented commissions he received, he must have had light religious responsibilities. One of his most extensive projects was the decoration of the Dominican Monastery of San Marco in Florence between 1435 and 1445. Fra Angelico went to work at the Vatican in Rome in 1445, and the frescoes at San Marco were completed by his assistants several years later.
Angelico combined the influence of the elegantly decorative Gothic style of Gentile da Fabriano with the more realistic style of such Renaissance masters as the painter Masaccio and the sculptors Donatello and Ghiberti, all of whom worked in Florence. Angelico was also aware of the theories of perspective. His skill in creating monumental figures, representing motion, and suggesting deep space through the use of linear perspective, especially in the Roman frescoes, mark him as one of the foremost painters of the Renaissance.

The artists whose works are the focus of the meditations are masters at conveying the sense of the sacred which is so conducive to reflective prayer. The method of reciting the rosary that is used here is praised by Pope Paul VI in his encyclical Marialis Cultus : "For the precise purpose of favoring contemplation and to help the mind correspond to the words being used, it was the practice at one time... to add to the name of Jesus in every 'Hail Mary' a phrase which would recall the mystery that had been announced" (n. 46).
    Reviews
Through the Rosary with Fra Angelico is an outstanding little art booklet which illustrates each mystery of the Rosary with a detail from some work of Fra Angelico. They are done in vibrant color which really does them justice. Included in the booklet is a brief history of the Rosary, an explanation of how to say it, and, for each mystery, biblical citations and prayer intentions which come from the work of St. Louis Grignion de Montfort. This little beauty was put together by Domenico Marcucci. The cost is a mere $2.95."

    The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius:
    Selections Annotated and Explained

In 1862 the English literary critic and poet Matthew Arnold described Marcus Aurelius as "the most beautiful figure in history." The Stoicism of Aurelius is grounded in rationality and rests solidly on an ethical approach rooted in nature. Stoicism promises real happiness and joy in this life and a serenity that can never be soured by personal misfortune. This philosophy has universal appeal with practical implications on problems ranging from climate change and terrorism to the personal management of sickness, aging, depression and addiction. I truly believe that the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius has much to offer us now...(Click on book cover for more)

ANGELICO, Fra (b. ca. 1400, Vicchio nell Mugello, d. 1455, Roma)
    Biography
Florentine painter, a Dominican friar, originally named Guido di Pietro. Although in popular tradition he has been seen as 'not an artist properly so-called but an inspired saint', (Ruskin), Angelico was in fact a highly professional artist, who was in touch with the most advanced developments in contemporary Florentine art and in later life travelled extensively for prestigious commissions. Angelico entered a Dominican convent in Fiesole in 1418 and became a friar using the name Giovanni da Fiesole. Although his teacher is unknown, he apparently began his career as an illuminator of missals and other religious books. He began to paint altarpieces and other panels; among his important early works are the Madonna of the Star (1428?-1433, San Marco, Florence) and Christ in Glory Surrounded by Saints and Angels (National Gallery, London), which depicts more than 250 distinct figures. Among other works of that period are two of the Coronation of the Virgin (San Marco and Louvre, Paris) and
