John Anster Fitzgerald (1832-1906): An Overview
Biography
J. A. Fitzgerald is one of the most delicate and imaginative of the Victorian Fairy painters. More than any of the other artists working in this genre, he was able to suggest the existence of a coherent alternative world, which was ethereal and bizarre. He exhibited in most of the major London exhibitions from 1845 onwards, showing works at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, the Society of British Artists, the Watercolour Society, and the Dudley Gallery (Nahum).

Victorian Fairy Paintings
from the Frick Collection
NEW YORK CITY - Attracting record crowds in British and American venues, "Victorian Fairy Painting" continues at the Frick Collection. This is the first comprehensive exhibition ever devoted to this distinctly British genre, which was critically and commercially popular from the early Nineteenth Century through the beginning of World War I. The 34 paintings, works on paper, and objects were selected by Edgar Munhall, curator of the Frick Collection, from the original, larger touring exhibition, which was organized by the University of Iowa Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Fairy painting brought together many opposing elements in the collective psyche and artistic sensibility of its time: rich subject-matter, an escape from the grim elements of an industrial society, an indulgence of new attitudes towards sex, a passion for the unknown, and a denial of the exactitude of photography. Drawing on literary inspiration from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to Sir Walter Scott's Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border

"The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke" by Richard Dadd In the pre–television, pre–cinema world of the Victorians, theater, ballet, and opera had greater importance as forms of popular entertainment than they enjoy today — as well as a greater influence on the visual and literary arts. In the 1830s, the new Romantic ballet (as opposed to formal, classical ballet) thrilled large audiences in London with productions that dramatized tales of love between mortals and fairy spirits. Aided by innovations in "point work" (dancing on the points of one's toes), and improvements in theater gas–lighting techniques, sumptuous fairylands were created in hit productions such as La Sylphide , the tragic story of a mortal man in love with an elfin maid. In theater, fairy plays were staged with stunningly elaborate special effects, each new production striving to be even more spectacular than the last.

Flights into Fantasy: The Kendra and Allan Daniel Collection of Children's Illustration at the Brandywine River Museum
John Anster Fitzgerald (1819-1906), Rabbit Among the Fairies (mid-19th century), watercolor and gouache on paper, collection of Kendra and Allan Daniel. Kendra and Allan Daniel began their collection of children's illustration in the mid 1980s. In their words, the focus of the collection " . . . is on the universe of the imagination: a place where all things are possible. It is not just about children. It is about childhood, the state of being . . . where the mind wanders freely into a world of wonder."
This fall, on public view for the first time, the Brandywine River Museum exhibits more than 100 images of fantasy by some of the world's most renowned illustrators. "Flights into Fantasy: The Kendra and Allan Daniel Collection of Children's Illustration" presents delightful images and wonderful works that excite the imagination. Images of fairies and childhood are featured here in drawings, decorative designs and cartoons. Many works are by illustrators famous for their innovative styles and the memorable characters they delineated.
Their selections have always been based on connoisseurship. Initially, their interest was in American illustrators, but soon they discovered the work of eminent British illustrators and artists from other countries. The first work acquired for the collection was an illustration by Harold Gaze, a New Zealand artist who immigrated to the United States in the 1920s.

      • UK Tuesday, 19 September 2006 A painter with no formal training and failing eyesight, who produced forgeries of Victorian oil paintings to pay for his son's school fees, has been sentenced to two years in prison. Robert Thwaites, 54, sold his forgeries to respected art dealers, including gallery owner and Antiques Roadshow expert Rupert Maas. It was only when Thwaites attempted to sell a third painting entitled Poppy with Imps and Fairies and Foliage with his brother Brian Thwaites, 50, that a would-be client became suspicious and the pair were arrested. Thwaites, who was described as an accomplished artist, despite having no formal training, worked as a graphic designer until the late 1990s, when he was forced to give it up as his eyesight deteriorated.
