Leslie Sacks Fine Art , West Los Angeles) In an intimate but very complete exhibition of Lyonel Feininger's works from 1919 through 1948, oils, watercolors and woodcuts by this intriguing artist offer a tantalizing glimpse of his unique cubist vision. Feininger was born in New York City, son of concert violinist Carl Feininger. Feininger fils remembered growing up in an atmosphere of music that continued to influence his art throughout his life. He also absorbed the cacophony of images that made up the urban world of New York. He was mesmerized by the beauty and power of the trains, and on trips to the Hudson River he was fascinated by paddle steamboats, schooners and yachts. In this rich environment Feininger absorbed what became constant leitmotifs in the art of his maturity. In 1887, he left for Germany to study music, but within a year decided to study art in Berlin. By 1919, he was invited by Walter Gropius to join the staff of the Bauhaus, which, of course, was to become one of the most influential design schools in the world. Feininger left only when Hitler closed it in 1933. Like the art of Bauhaus colleagues Paul Klee and Wasily Kandinsky, Feininger's work was always unique in its refinement and use of fantasy. During the 1920's he exhibited in America under the umbrella of Galka Scheyer's Blue Four.

The son of two professional musicians, New York City born Feininger was sent to Germany to study music in 1886. He was more interested in art, however, and attended the Berlin Art Academy and the Colarossi Academy in Paris. He started his career as a cartoonist in 1894, working for a number of German, French and American magazines. In 1906, he created 'The Kin-der-Kids' and 'Wee Willie Winkie's World' for the Chicago Tribune. Due to a dispute with his publishers, Feininger left these strips after a few months and went on with his career as a celebrated painter and artist. He lived in Europe, teaching art at the famous Bauhaus school among other places, until 1937. In the later years of his life, Feininger expressed the desire to finish his comic strips, but he never did. Modern artist Lyonel Feininger 's (1871-1956) 200 woodcuts, 23 etchings, 6 lithographs, and 56 drawings and watercolors in the Loeberman Collection is on exhibiton in the Kunstsammlungen near Chemnitz Germany until February 2007. The architect Harold Loebermann was attracted to Feininger's works because of their pronounced architectural-like elements. Feininger and Frank Lloyd Wright are drawn together for their shared search for "the hidden laws of nature." As Feininger wrote, "The laws of nature, into which we delve when we create form, are and remain unsuspected by others. Yes, our sensitivity, our capacity for feeling, our desire—it is these that reveal the new laws of nature, visible to us alone." Works on paper are not a secondary or peripheral aspect of Feininger's works. He was drawn to fine handmade papers and like many modern artists, also to the printing process for its possibilities for new avenues of expression and its technical capabilities regraphic-like stylistic elements. Paper lent itself favorably to Feininger's matured style that incorporated elements of expressionism, cubism, fauvism, and futurism. Feiniger's distictive style formed a "multi-layered symbiosis between Romanticism, reality, and vision" and is widely described as "Crystalline Cubism" for the particular, architecture-like sharpness of its forms.

Liverputty Friday, October 12, 2007 Lyonel Feiningera short appreciation from Escutcheon Blot 'Marktkirche von Halle' I have been looking back at the last few months of Liverputty International, and thought that I might put in a little art appreciation of one of my favorite painters, the American-German-American modernist, Lyonel Feininger. Born in America to German parents, Feininger migrated to Germany as a teenager, and studied art, eventually becoming a caricaturist and cartoonist. Only in his middle thirties did he start seriously painting. A member of both the Bauhaus movement (where he taught) and the Famous Blaue Reiter group (with Kandinsky, Franz Marc, et al) he was quite popular until the rise of the Nazis in 1933. In 1936 he and his jewish-descended wife emigrated back to America, when Feininger's works were included in the tour of Degenerate Art, organized by Goering. He spent the rest of his life in New York. Feininger was one of the only artists to further explore the early cubist theories of Picasso and Braquesindeed, he never departed from the basic cubist premises. But his works speak for themselves. Schlossbergy has a collegiate church in the old quarter of Quedlinburg, where 22,000 people reside in the northern foothills of Germany's Lower Harz Mountains. Home to more than 1,000 works by the German-American artist Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956), the gallery is a treasure that thrills art lovers from all over the world. It belongs to the Moritzburg Foundation, the State Museum of Art of Saxony-Anhalt, in the city of Halle on the Saale River. 'The collection gives a nearly complete overview of the prints created in Germany by this significant master of classic modernism,' remarked Bjoern Egging, the museum's director. A large number of watercolours and drawings, as well as several paintings, round out the collection. Born in the United States to German parents, Feininger lived in Germany from 1887 to 1937 before returning to his native country. Thanks to the dedicated and risky efforts of Quedlinburg art collector Hermann Klumpp (1902-1987), the bulk of Feininger's works were saved from the Nazis, who branded modern art 'degenerate.'
