Lyonel Feininger
Lyonel Feininger was a Cubist / Expressionist painter, illustrator, superb caricaturist and printmaker. He was loved for his lighthearted subject matter, known for clean, crystalline abstract seascapes and powerful urban scenes. His bold and expressive designs follow in the footsteps of the great Germanic woodcutting tradition.
Lyonel Feininger was born in New York City, on July 17, 1871. The son of two German accomplished musicians, he was expected to study music but he attended the Berlin Art Academy and the Cola Rossi Academy in Paris. Although born in New York, Lyonel Feininger lived and worked mostly in Germany.
Feininger's career as cartoonist started in 1894. He was working for a number of German, French and American magazines. He was hired to illustrate two comic strips 'The Kin-der-Kids' and 'Wee Willie Winkie's World' for the Chicago Tribune. After a few months he left these strips and went on with his career as a celebrated painter and artist.
Feininger was deeply influenced by the Futurists and adopted prismatic style, with facets that are forming three-dimensional objects. That's why he was named Form Master. In 1919, Feininger became a founding member of the legendary Bauhaus school of art and architecture at Weimar and later in Dessau until it was closed in 1932. Because his wife was Jewish and fascists forced him to give up his American citizenship, the couple decided to return to New York in 1937. There he worked and died at age 85 in January 1956.

"... Art is not a profession but the highest expression, the greatest necessity." Lyonel Feininger. Lyonel Feininger was born in New York to German immigrant parents. He left for Europe in 1887 to study music but soon turned to art which he studied in Hamburg, Berlin and Paris. He quickly established a reputation as one of the foremost political cartoonists in Germany before being offered a contract to produce caricatures for the Chicago Sunday Tribune, for which he created one of his most famous strips in 1906, 'The Kin-der-Kids'. In 1907 Feininger dedicated himself to painting. On a visit to Paris he came into contact with Cubism and, with the support of Robert Delaunay, he began to develop a distinctive style of painting. He became a member of the Section door in 1912 and exhibited with the Blue Rider group the following year. He remained in Germany throughout the First World War and in 1919 joined the Bauhaus school where he taught until its closure by the Nazis in

born July 17, 1871, New York City died Jan. 13, 1956, New York City American artist whose paintings and teaching activities at the Bauhaus brought a new compositional discipline and lyrical use of colour into the predominantly Expressionistic art of Germany. Feininger left the United States for Germany in 1887 to study music but decided to become an artist instead. He studied painting in Hamburg, Berlin, and Paris between 1887 and 1893 and then worked as a cartoonist for German humour magazines and the Chicago Tribune. Blaue Reiter After World War I Feininger joined the staff of the Bauhaus workshops. The structural direction of his own work was closely akin to the aim of the Bauhaus: a synthesis of art, science, and technology. In 1936, after the Nazis came to power, Feininger returned to the United States, where he remained. Lyonel Feininger was born in New York in 1871 into a musical family. As a teenager, Feininger was sent to Germany to study the violin but ended up drawing and entered the Berlin Academy. Later, he moved to Paris to develop his artistic talent in a more nurturing environment, and within a few years of his return to Berlin, Feininger was one of Germany's best caricaturists. In 1906 Feininger returned again to Paris where he took up painting, and in 1910, he was exposed to and influenced by the Cubist movement, and his style became more fragmented. He interpreted Cubism in his own work as structuring a composition through the use of sharp, prismatic planes of color. In 1911 Feininger exhibited at the Salon des Independents, to which he was invited due to his involvement with the German group, Der Blaue Reiter. From 1918 until 1926, he taught at the German school of design, the Bauhaus, which operated between 1919 and 1933, and whose aim was to join art and architecture. Feininger's structural nature fit in perfectly. In 1937 Feininger returned to New York City and two years passed before he began painting again, and when he did, he sought out new forms and ideas.
