Dada Artist Max Ernst
First Used Frottage in His Work in 1925
Suzanne Hill Sep 30, 2007
Ernst, advocate for irrationality in art, favored non-traditional artistic methods for the strange, mysterious human, animal, bird, and plant forms they suggested.
Q. Which painter developed the technique of frottage?
A. Max Ernst
Frottage is the French word for a surrealist technique in which the artist takes a pencil or other drawing tool and makes a rubbing over the textured surface of such things as wood grain, fabric, or leaves as a form of spontaneous creation. The drawing can either be left as is or further refined to bring out the shapes the rubbings invoke. Surrealist painter Max Ernst (1891-1976) practiced Dada, the nihilistic art movement. Dada was conjured up at the time of World War I. The movement was a protest against the horror and barbarism of war and against the colonialist interests that were believed to be the root cause of the war. Not only that, Dada was an expression against cultural, intellectual, and artistic conformity viewed as an integral part of the prevailing more realistic or classical art of the day. Dadaism was anti-art. Dada hoped to destroy traditional values in culture, aesthetics, and art. Ernst formed a group of Dada artists in Cologne that once created a scandal by organizing a Dada exhibit in a public restroom.

- Max Ernst was born in Brühl, Germany. He studied philosophy and art at the University of Bonn. In 1913 Ernst met Guillaume Apollinaire and traveled to Paris, France for the gathering of artists from around the globe. During First World War he served in the German army. In 1922 Ernst returned to the artistic community at Montparnasse in Paris where he became a central figure in the Surrealist Movement. In 1925 he invented frottage, a technique using pencil rubbings of objects. With Miro's help, Max Ernst pioneered grattage in which he troweled pigment from his canvases. In Montparnasse he was important in the birth of Surrealism. In 1934 Max Ernst began to work in sculpture. In 1938 Peggy Guggenheim acquired a number of Max Ernst's works for her museum in London, England. Following the outbreak of World War II, Max Ernst was detained as an enemy alien but he managed to escape the country with Peggy Guggenheim.

‘The Hundred-Headless Woman,’ Continued
There follow another seven of the collages from Max Ernst’s 1929 collage-novel, La Femme 100 Tªtes (‘The Hundred-Headless Woman’). As in the previous entry, below, my source for these images (and for the quotations that accompany them), was the book Max Ernst edited by Edward Quinn, published by the New York Graphic Society in 1977. Where and when did collage first appear? I believe, despite the claims put forward by several of the pioneers of Dada, that it is Max Ernst who is to be thanked for it, at least as regards the two forms of collage furthest from the original idea of glued paper: photographic collage and the collage of illustrations - Louis Aragon La Peinture au d©fi If it is the plumes that make the plumage, it is not the glue [la colle] that makes the gluing [le collage]. One day in the summer of 1929, a painter I knew asked me: ‘What are you doing these days? Are you working?’ I replied: ‘Yes, I'm making gluings [collages]. I'm preparing a book that will be called La Femme 100 Tªtes .’ Then he whispered in my ear: ‘And what sort of glue do you use?’ With that modest air that my contemporaries admire in me I was obliged to confess to him that in most of my collages there wasn't any glue at all…

Fundação Arpad Szenes - Vieira da Silva

Lisbon, , PT Portugal
When I reach an impasse with my painting - which happens again and again - sculpture is left to me as a way out, for sculpture is more of a game than painting. In sculpture, as in love-making, both hands play a part. Therefore it is like taking holidays so as to return to painting later Max Ernst is remembered above all as a painter. It was through painting that he expressed his great innovative contribution to artistic language. But the truth is that his interest in plastic expression runs throughout his whole work. As of the end of the 20s, Max Ernsts interest in sculpture as an autonomous discipline became more evident and his plastic production became increasingly independent of his pictorial production, developing its own stylistic direction: in sculpture, the artist gave greater emphasis to the rhythmic and spatial values of strong constructive harmonies, which are underlined by the choice of materials used: stone and, above all, bronze. His imagination breathes life into images of a totemic nature. It is as if his works represent symbols of a personal sacredness and always carry a mysterious tension within themselves. In the materials he uses, Max Ernst cuts out gigantic or small pieces, which he distinguishes with a clearness of form to define synthesised, almost primitive, images endowed with an unexpected monumentality.
