Max Ernst 1891 - 1976
"Surrealism was already in full force in the work of Max Ernst"
Max Ernst was born in April 1891 just outside Cologne. His family life was dominated by the rule of his father - quick tempered and built like an outdoor toilet. Max was a strange child who suffered many emotional crises and who in his teen years identified himself with his pet Cockatoo, Loplop. He first got drunk aged 2 - after drinking the dregs from his fathers wine, he was found some time later, pointing at the trees in his garden saying "Look, they're going round". Ernst began painting aged 5 - pictures of his family mainly. In that year (1895), Max ran away to escape his father, he was dressed in red and held a whip in his hand, he ran into a procession of pilgrims who declared him 'the Christ-Child'. When he returned home his father painted a version of the scene (replacing the whip with a cross). Instead of being grateful for this gesture, Max was insulted - although the picture was of him he felt it was 'about' his father, i.e his father is painting a picture of Christ therefore his father (and all artists for that matter) must see himself as 'God the father'.
In 1897 Max's sister died and he suffered from measels - causing severe hallucinations.

His youthful interests were psychiatry and philosophy, but he abandoned his studies at the University of Bonn for painting. After serving in the German army during World War I, Ernst was converted to Dada q.v. ), a nihilistic art movement, and formed a group of Dada artists in Cologne; with the artist-poet Jean Arp, he edited journals and created a scandal by staging a Dada exhibit in a public rest room. More important, however, were his Dada collages and photomontages, such as In 1922 Ernst moved to Paris, where, two years later, he became a founding member of the Surrealists, a group of artists and writers whose work grew out of fantasies evoked from the unconscious. To stimulate the flow of imagery from his unconscious mind, Ernst began in 1925 to use the techniques of frottage (pencil rubbings of such things as wood grain, fabric, or leaves) and

Interesting Max Ernst wasn't only active as a painter: he has made several movies and several sculptures as well.
Max Ernst was considered to be a man of such high personal integrity and wisdom that he was once allowed to speak directly with Adolph Hitler and convey his opinions against Germany's racial policies.
Max Ernst was the first to write down the equation usually attributed to Boltzmann (S = k lnW). The constant k was first used by Planck in 1900. Lorentz and others called k Planck's (which was Ernst's full name) constant until 1911, when the term Boltzmann’s constant became generally accepted.

Max Ernst
Max Ernst, photograph by Yousuf Karsh, 1965.
died April 1, 1976, Paris, Fr. German-born French painter and sculptor. He gave up studying philosophy and psychology at Bonn University for painting. After serving in World War I, he became the leader of the Dada movement in Cologne (1919), working in collage and photomontage. A characteristic work is Here Everything Is Still Floating (1920), a startlingly illogical composition made from cutout photographs of insects, fish, and anatomical drawings. In 1922 he settled in Paris and was among the founders of Surrealism . His work was imaginative and experimental; he pioneered the technique of frottage and experimented with automatism . After 1934 the irrational and whimsical imagery seen in his paintings appeared also in his sculpture. In 1941 he moved to New York City, where he joined his third wife, Peggy Guggenheim , and began collaborating with Marcel Duchamp . He returned to France in 1953 and continued to produce lyrical and abstract works. document.writeln(AAMB2);

Ernst: Chance, Collage and the Study of Freud
Max Ernst is considered one of the founders of the Dada movement.
When one chooses to look at a piece of art from a Freudian viewpoint, most times the comparison is rather far flung and many times the work may have had nothing to do with Freud in the mind of the artist that wrote it; however, Max Ernst was a student of psychology in the early twentieth century and studied Freud. Many of the components of Ernst’s art can also be seen through modern science and psychology, such as theories of Freud: chance, the subconscious, condensation and juxtaposition and then these ideas can be applied to the evaluation of his works, Oedipus Rex and The Hat Makes the Man.
The idea of chance is a key element in Ernst’s collages. The collage is an arrangement of found objects, found meaning randomly collected, and then are assembled in a sort of “chance meeting” often in a strange sort of association that tends to represent the subconscious, which was a key part of many of Freud’s works. Ernst was a student of abnormal psychology from 1910 to 1914 at the University of Bonn and he has been noted as reading many of Freud’s works in Bonn during this time and among the two most influential were Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious and The Interpretation of Dreams. Chance is actually a vehicle through which the unconscious mind can be explored and it also served as a way for the Ernst and other artists in the Dadaist and Surrealist movements to access forms and themes which would attempt to dissolve ties to the material, representative world of the old art.

    Max Ernst
    Birth Year : 1891
    Death Year : 1973 Country : France Max Ernst, born in Bruhl, near Cologne, did not prepare for a career in art but studied philosophy at Bonn from 1909 to 1911. His interest in contemporary art movements and in the works of Macke and Chirico led to his encounter with the Dada movement, begun in Zurich in 1916 by Jean Arp Marcel Duchamp , and other painters who revolted against the senseless killing in mass warfare. The term Dada, which is derived from a word children use meaning hobbyhorse, was chosen for its childish sound and meaning. Dada is a satiric form of art that takes any object and makes it art simply because the artist chooses to place it in a picture, gives it a satiric title, and creates a chance reality. Nothing is sacred in Dada and anything that stimulates the artist's imagination may be used. This stimulation of the artist's imagination led to Surrealism, a literary form of art that takes many of its ideas from psychoanalysis, and states that the dream of the artist may pass from his unconscious mind onto the canvas. In Paris, the poets André Breton and Paul Eluard led the Surrealist group, and Ernst joined them when he arrived in Paris in 1922. To achieve dreamlike effects upon canvas, Ernst invented many techniques. One of these, first noted by Leonardo da Vinci, is that of observing strange shapes in natural objects. To achieve his fantastic and very imaginative dream landscapes, Ernst also made use of decalcomania, transferring oil paint to canvas from some rough surface by pressure; frottage, rubbing a piece of wood, stone, or metal; and collage, the pasting of pieces of paper or cloth to canvas. Ernst's imagination also led him to experiment with automatic writing, to write a collage novel, to collaborate on a Surrealist film, and to paint frescoes and theatrical sets. In 1941 he left Paris for New York where he rejoined

    ERNST Max Max Ernst was born on April 2, 1891, in Bruhl, Germany. He enrolled in the University at Bonn in 1909 to study philosophy, but soon abandoned this pursuit to concentrate on art. At this time he was interested in psychology and the art of the mentally ill. In 1911 Ernst became a friend of August Macke and joined the Rheinische Expressionisten group in Bonn. Ernst showed for the first time in 1912 at the Galerie Feldman in Cologne. At the Sonderbund exhibition of that year in Cologne he saw the work of Paul Guillaume Apollinaire and Robert Delaunay and traveled to Paris. Ernst participated that same year in the Erste deutsche Herbstsalon. In 1914 he met Jean Arp, who was to become a lifelong friend. Despite military service throughout World War I, Ernst was able to continue
