I). Through a window in the wall to the left, one catches a glimpse of Ostend's Van Iseghemlaan, quite as Ensor depicted it in a masterly drawing (fig. 2; the nunnery with the two stepped gables was pulled down in the 1920s). This peaceful studio has been the battlefield of spectres: fully dressed skeletons, and skulls with curious appendages, rags, coloured scarfs, shreds of bedsheets in lieu of bodies, lie about, recovering from their fights. Ensor is as much a painter of skeletons as of masks. In his mother's souvenir shop, masks were. offered for sale during Carnival along with the usual assortment of beach articles, sea shells, ships in bottles, and dried sea plants. Even today the visitor will find a variety of those masks in the shop as well as in Ensor's salon, now both part of his Museum; it is possible to identify certain of these masks as characters in some of his best-known paintings. Skeletons also were among the requisites of the Ostend Carnival and of the charades performed by Ensor and his friend, young Ernest Rousseau. They posed for the photographer in the dunes as cannibals, gnawing away on human bones, or fighting duels with parts of skeletons which they might have dug out

The core of his output consists of prints created in a variety of graphic art techniques. Ensor's lithographs are replete with fantastic and macabre motifs akin to the iconography of Breughl and Bosch. The artist's highly intriguing works were impressive for his changeable, virtuoso style. The dramatic tone of these compositions contrasts with the poetic mood and grace of his seascapes from the region around Ostend. As depicted by Ensor, schooners and rowboats rocking on the waves and masts as dense as forests in port exude peace and are charming for their simplicity. The works of this Flemish artist, abounding with symbolic themes, express a range of moods, feelings and spiritual states, manifesting human passions and suggesting subdued desires. In his later years, the rooms above his mother’s curiosity shop in Ostend, Belgium, where he lived his whole life long, became a place of pilgrimage for artists, collectors, and museum people who visited him to pay his respects to him. There, amidst his paintings and drawings, he received Emil Nolde, Erich Heckel, Wassily Kandinsky, and others. Besides Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch, Ensor is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the "avant-garde of the North.". Ensor's paintings peopled by masks, skeletons, and imaginary creatures, as well as his theatrical still lifes have become unmistakable symbols of the absurdity of existence and influenced both German Expressionists and French Surrealists. Especially when seen in the light of present-day trends, such as the renaissance of the figurative and the narrative, the simultaneousness of painting and drawing, or manifestations of the grotesque and comic, Ensor’s work obtains new topical relevance. With eighty masterpieces on canvas and the same numbers of works on paper from international museums and private collections, the exhibition on view at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt until 19 March 2006 presents key works from each of his creative periods.

His portraits, which offer a grotesque vision of humanity, became the principal precursor of Expressionism and Surrealism. Early in his career Ensor painted traditional landscapes, still lives, portraits, and interior scenes with rich color and soft light. In the mid 1880s, however, influenced by the bold color of the Impressionists and the grotesque images of the old Flemish masters, he developed vanguard themes and styles. He began to represent humanity as infected, vain, and hateful, depicting individuals as skeletons and replacing faces for carnival masks. He deliberately used strong clashing colors as well as violent brushstrokes, to underline the aggressive subjects of his work. Ensor’s work exercised an enormous influence on 20th century painting, specifically paving the way for Surrealism and Dadaism.
