James Ensor: The Entry of Christ into Brussels (1888)
James Ensor: The Entry of Christ into Brussels (1888)
From time to time, I intend to post, and occasionally discuss in some detail, some of my favourite works of art, given an interest in art history that goes back many years, kindled by an inspirational teacher in Grade 4 in Beaconsfield, Quebec. My first such post continues the religious theme that has been the focus of my blog since the recent death of Pope John Paul II.
put it
in The Washington Post : "Those are fighting words." Whether Ratzinger was right or wrong, and to what degree he may have been both right and wrong, is another matter for another time. Suffice it to say here that prior to his election he took some unflinching shots at modernity or, perhaps more accurately, at post-Nietzschean late-modernity (now generally known as postmodernism). Although he (as Pope Benedict XVI) has since moderated his speech and reached out as a less combative conciliator, his entrenched opposition to the forces of modernity sweeping through Europe (and well beyond) is well-established. It may even come to define his papacy.
Think of that when you look at Ensor's painting. There's a connection to be made.

James Ensor
Birth Year : 1860 Death Year : 1949 Country : Belgium The Germanic spirit that so violently separated the self and the material world had a profound effect on its artists: witness the tortuously emotional lives of Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch Masks, ghosts and demons people his art in canvases that otherwise are bathed in gentle light and vibrant colors. Although the objects of Ensor's canvases are, for the most part, inanimate, they give the impression of having been somehow surprised in the midst of some diabolical activity. From his early twenties Ensor's work evokes the suspicion with which he seemed to regard both his fellow man and the inanimate objects that surrounded him. Ensor was completely isolated in the hallucinatory world of his creation, an isolation that is revealed in his portrayal of the human figure behind a mask, which revealed all of his baser and more destructive aspects. His art is filled with images in which men exist only as phantoms or ghosts, eroded by death or contained in a peculiar experience of space-imaginary, shriveling into shallow areas, rushing again at a great distance as something new and monstrous. These themes are not artistic exaggerations, as they would be in the later surrealistic paintings of such artists as

JAMES ENSOR ENSOR (1860-1949). DEATH Death in shroud, death in white, but a death in the nave of insane, quite alive, among us. On the other characters, masks, caps, and make-up to dissimulate our true face, but death appears alone, without artifice, because, against it, one can nothing. Ensor had a fear and simultaneously a fascination of death. ENSOR. MASKS ENSOR surrounded by crowd of people hidden, mysterious, strange, through sinister masks, where the fears take forms as many than individuals. The death is inside us, whatever is the style of life we give ourselves. And death, in top on the left, always present everywhere, for not that it is forgotten... The make-up, the masks, the caps, the scarves, the beard... as much of signs which hide the true nature of people, and ENSOR emphasizes on each one of these faces the torments which undermine each one

Belgian painter and printmaker. In a bold style employing vivid colours, he created a surreal and macabre world inhabited by masked figures and skeletons. Such works as his famous Entry of Christ into Brussels Christ's Entry into Brussels were treated with contempt, but 1908 Emile Verhaeren first recognized his gifts, and the exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels 1929 may be said to have made the (by then aged) painter's reputation. In addition to paintings he produced a large number of drawings and etchings. The most eminent of modern Belgian painters, he is adequately represented in the national collections at Antwerp and Brussels. hut(2)

Ensor in his Studio 1897
James Sydney Ensor
was born in 1860 in the Belgian seaside town of Ostende. Today he is considered that country's great contribution to the history of modern art. However in the heyday of his artistic efforts, he was by and large ignored, criticized and even ridiculed. Ensor displayed a remarkable prescience in the period when artistic styles were undergoing a revolution across the Western world. Very capable at the underlying basics of his craft, his artistic vision produced works across a broad spectrum of new styles. Paul Haesearts in his 1959 biography of Ensor summed it up well: "He deliberately defied the shortsighted critics who wanted to confine the painter to a single style of artistic expression - and this revolutionary attitude, which is essentially modern, was one of the reasons that he was ostracized by the artistic community...According to mood, he was in turn Realist, Naturalist, Impressionist, Symbolist, Pointillist, Fauve, Expressionist, Surrealist, and he was each of these irreverently, in no orthodox spirit, upsetting all classifications."
