James Ensor Intrigue. Oil on canvas H. 37 1/4 W. 44 1/2 in. MIA About the Art Intrigue In Ensor's painting, the figures are placed close to the picture plane as if they are on a stage, dramatically confronting the viewer. Mariette, the blue-haired, green-capped woman, and Tan, the man in the black top hat, are in the center of the crowd. Mariette holds Tan's arm protectively, while he seems to withdraw into the collar of his coat. They are surrounded by grotesque gossipers who, safe in their carnival masks, have come to taunt them. A heckler in the foreground carries a Chinese doll and points an accusing finger at Tan. Although in some instances masks can be cheerful and festive, in Ensor's work they represent the dark side of human nature. Here they seem to reflect the true personalities of the people who wear them, showing them to be cruel, "ugly" people. However, Mariette and Tan, like their tormentors, are also in masquerade. The mask serves two functions: it can protect the vulnerable and also hide the identity of the vicious. Rather than depicting things as they actually appear, Ensor creates a sense of fantasy and

James Ensor is and was a controversial artist: by his work, by his character and by his attitude. It was told that he had a gigantic ego.
In 1994 a new audience was introduced to James Ensor when They Might Be Giants released the song "Meet James Ensor," which aptly describes him as "Belgium's famous painter."
In 1995, the state of Belgium recognized Ensor's achievements by dedicating the 100-franc (~ 2.5 EUR) bill to him and his work.

The Artist as Prophet
Christ's Entry into Brussels Chronicler of Now and Future Villany

As 21st-century civilization careens to new heights of barbarism and depths of human depravation, the work of the mentally-disturbed 19th-century Belgian painter and printmaker, James Ensor, takes on fresh relevance. Today's succesion of ever-more-luctuous world events seems to corroborate Ensor's macabre view of Man as singularly nefarious and vile. It was this intensely pessimistic if ultimately realistic world view, expressed in a series of astonishing paintings and etchings, which made Ensor a pariah during his productive years as an artist, rejected not only by the right-thinking Flemish burghers of his native Belgium, but also by the members of Les Vingt , the avant garde group of painters of which he, himself, was founder and leading light. History, however, is as ruthless as it is inevitable. While the other members of that aspiring Flemish vanguard are long forgotten, Ensor's legend looms larger and larger, and the descendants of the Belgian bourgeois are regretting that their forbears had not invested in some of Ensor's "outlandish and offensive" works of art.

His mother supported the family by running a souvenir and gift shop. The shop sold Chinese goods, seashells, and Carnival masks, elements that play a strong part in Ensor's art. Ensor's sister, Mariette, was born about a year after him. At Sixteen Ensor was already showing his talent for art. These two pictures are made with oil paint on cardboard packing from his mother's gift shop, in Ostend, Belgium.

Biography:

Belgian artist, James Ensor learned impressionist method, but rebelliously incorporated controversial themes, colors, and shapes into his work. He developed these ideas at the same time as Van Gogh, although there is no record of any interaction between the two or knowledge of either's work In 1884, he helped found the art Les Vignts, but his preference for solitude led him away from the group. Ensor’s focus on morbid subjects such as skulls and corpses in his early work incited criticism from the public. Although his paintings became more traditional later in his life, Ensor is noted for those earlier paintings because of their significance in the transition from Symbolism to Surrealism.

James Ensor, Belgian Artist
Ensor House, Ostend Commentary Jeffery W. Howe, Boston College, 1998: Realism intersected with Symbolism in the allegorical pictures of James Ensor (1860-1949). His most famous picture, The Entry of Christ into Brussels of 1888, was recently sold to the Getty Art Museum in Malibu; previously it had been on a long term loan to the City Art Museum in his home town of Ostend. A thorough cleaning and restoration has revealed the full vibrancy of this picture. The Entry of Christ into Brussels shows a satirical view of the second coming of Christ. A controversial painting, it was listed at the 1889 catalog for Les XX, but was not shown. In fact, it was not shown publically until 1929.(1) The Enrty of Christ into Brussels is a very large painting, in bright, even garish colors, painted in a deliberately crude style. Ensor aggressively challenged the rules of perspective and even good taste in this picture. Most people are shown wearing masks that can not be distinguished from their true faces. Ensor reasoned that if Christ were to return to earth, modern commercial and political interests would certainly try to co-opt the event. Although Christ has been given a parade in his honor, and he is shown entering Brussels on the back of a donkey as he entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, he is almost lost in the crowd. The mayor of Brussels (at upper right, with the cane and sash) seems to be trying to use the event for his advantage. Ensor identified with the martyred Christ, and he used his own features for the face of Christ. In its free use of color and space and brushwork to enhance the psychological impact, Ensor's work paved the way for Expressionism in the twentieth century.

Comparison Chart James Ensor Jesus Born in Ostend in 1860 Born away in a manger, AD Founding member of "Les XX", a short-lived group of artists Founder of a major world religion still practiced by millions today Was persecuted by angry art critics Was persecuted by angry Romans Left his mark in paintings Left his mark on a shroud For a time during his career he really identified with Christ, feeling his suffering as an obscure artist with unkind critics paralleled Christ's suffering. (If he was really suffering, shouldn't he have identified more with Job? And, I mean, how bad could life have actually been? It's not like anyone nailed him to a cross or anything. Ah, but I digress...) That is, until he became more widely known and loved as an artist. Then he cheered up. So much for the similarity. You can find other similarities in the handy Ensor-Christ comparison chart to the right. He became so famous in his home country of Belgium that King Albert made him a Baron. Now that's cool!
