—Dürer ( The Art of Measurement Albrecht Dürer, self-portrait A German printmaker who, through applying mathematics to art, brought important ideas to mathematics itself especially in the area of perspective geometry. Dürer was born in Nüremberg, one of 18 children, and showed an early talent for art. After a four-year apprenticeship in painting and woodcutting, he began traveling Europe, especially Italy, in search of new styles and ideas. Back in Nüremberg, he began a serious study of mathematics, absorbing Elements by Euclid and De architectura by the great Roman architect Vitrivius, and studying the work of Leone Alberti (1404-1472) and Luca Pacioli on mathematics and art, in particular their work on proportion. His mastery of perspective is clear in woodcuts "Life of a Virgin" (1502-1505). In about 1508 Dürer began to collect material for a major work on mathematics and its applications to the arts. This work was never be finished but Dürer did use parts of the material in later published work. One of his most famous engravings "Melancholia," produced in 1514, contains the first

News Type: Other arts art-history albrecht-durer biblical-paintings ... renaissaince-painters Lot and his daughters. self portrait I wanted to be able to publish a few images, so decided to do this as an article today rather than seed from one of the many good web sites on art and art history. Also because I don't have time to rewrite what has already been done well, I'm just listing the sites where you can get more information about this well-known Northern Renaissance printmaker and painter. This painting is of Lot and his daughters from the story in Genesis. It was painted sometime between 1496 and 1499. It can be found at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. This scene is painted on the reverse side of D¼rer's Madonna and Child.

Ed ecco, c'era un trono nel cielo, e sul trono uno stava seduto. Colui che stava seduto era simile nell'aspetto a diaspro e cornalina. Un arcobaleno simile a smeraldo avvolgeva il trono. Attorno al trono, poi, c'erano ventiquattro seggi e sui seggi stavano seduti ventiquattro vegliardi avvolti in candide vesti con corone d'oro sul capo. Dal trono uscivano lampi, voci e tuoni; sette lampade accese ardevano davanti al trono, simbolo dei sette spiriti di Dio. Davanti al trono vi era come un mare trasparente simile a cristallo. In mezzo al trono e intorno al trono vi erano quattro esseri viventi pieni d'occhi davanti e di dietro. Il primo vivente era simile a un leone, il secondo essere vivente aveva l'aspetto di un vitello, il terzo vivente aveva l'aspetto d'uomo, il quarto vivente era simile a un'aquila mentre vola. I quattro esseri viventi hanno ciascuno sei ali, intorno e dentro sono costellati di occhi;

Bequest of William P. Chapman, Jr., Class of 1895. 57.122 Melencolia I is grouped with his two other "master" engravings of 1513 and 1514, Knight, Death and the Devil, and St. Jerome in His Study , which represent the pinnacle of his engraved art. These prints are noted in technical terms for their achievement of greys and planes of shadow, the result of innumerable fine marks of the burin, an effect that in this case contributes greatly to the somber mood of the subject.

Dürer's self-portrait at age 28
(now in the collections of Alte Pinakothek of Munich) The most often reproduced and widely known work of the German artist Albrecht Dürer is the gray and white brush drawing on blue-grounded paper, entitled the "Hands of the Apostle," generally known as "The Praying Hands" This 1508 sketch was a preliminary study for an altarpiece commissioned by Jakob Heller (1460-1522), a wealthy merchant, member of the town council, and mayor of Frankfurt. Dürer finished the sketch in detail, to be copied exactly in the final painting of the altarpiece. Only the central panel depicting the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin was executed by Dürer himself. Dürer worked for 13 months on the final painting, determined to make it so sound and beautiful "that it will remain bright and fresh for five hundred years." Unfortunately, the central panel of the altarpiece was sold a century later by the Dominicans to Duke Maximilian of Bavaria, and in 1729 was destroyed by a fire. A 1614 copy of the Heller alterpiece, done by Jobst Harrich of Nuernberg (c. 1580-1617) has survived. So too, the preliminary sketches that Dürer had prepared for the final painting have survived.

Life of Mary and the Passion Concordia Historical Institute (CHI) is showing for the first time its spectacular collection of 43 Dürer woodcuts to the public with the theme A Sword Will Pierce Your Own Soul Too: The Life of Mary and the Passion of Christ in the Woodcuts of Albrecht Dürer. Fifteen hundred years later Albrecht Dürer gave these words their most enduring graphic expression. Now after another five hundred years, his woodcuts still have the power to draw the viewer into the lives of Mary and Jesus. The exhibition has been made possible by a very generous grant from Robert and Katharine (nee Haffenreffer) Selle in memory of Katharine's father, Theodore C. Haffenreffer, whose ancestor Matthias Haffenreffer was a contemporary and acquaintance of Albrecht Dürer and Martin Luther.
