Artists, however, were still very much a part of the artisan class, anonymous workshop craftsmen along with ceramicists, blacksmiths, silver smiths, gunsmiths, goldsmiths and a host of other master craftsmen. In the eyes of their contemporaries there was no reason to distinguish the craftsmen of the visual arts from the rest of the artisans. It was this foppish and self-consciencious young painter and printmaker who was destined to change virtually single handedly the status of "the artist as mere skilled worker," and to elevate the world of art and artists to a new, near-celestial plane. For Dürer went on to become not only the greatest printmaker of all time and one of the greatest painters, but he is also remembered as a seminal writer and theorist, as well as the crucial apostle of the Italian Renaissance in the North, having grasped like no other northern artist the great Italians' concept of the relationship between art and science. A First at the Age of Thirteen
He painted the first self portraits in the history of art (starting with a pencil sketch when he was 13 years old), and the first landscapes from life and for their own sake. (Previously they were mere inventions used as backgrounds for portraits.) His creative and intellectual powers, along with his prodigious belief in his own talents, permitted him to cast a new mold for "the artist," a mold which represented a watershed in the history of civilization and to which artists are still indebted today. And all of this in a far-off time just a few years after Columbus discovered San Salvador.

Timeline: Northern Renaissance I hold that the perfection of form and beauty is contained in the sum of all men.
Dürer, Four Books on Human Proportions Dürer, Albrecht (b. May 21, 1471, Imperial Free City of Nürnberg [Germany]d. April 6, 1528, Nürnberg), German painter, printmaker, draughtsman and art theorist, generally regarded as the greatest German Renaissance artist. His vast body of work includes altarpieces and religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings. His woodcuts, such as the Apocalypse series (1498), retain a more Gothic flavour than the rest of his work. Born in Nürnberg as the third son of the Hungarian goldsmith Albrecht Dürer. Began as an apprentice to his father in 1485, but his earliest known work, one of his many self portraits, was made in 1484. Died in Nürnberg in 1528. During 1513 and 1514 Dürer created the greatest of his copperplate engravings: the Knight St. Jerome in His Study , and Melencolia I all of approximately the same size, about 24.5 by 19.1 cm (9.5 by 7.5 inches). The extensive, complex, and often contradictory literature concerning these three engravings deals largely with their enigmatic, allusive, iconographic details. Although repeatedly contested, it probably must be accepted that the engravings were intended to be interpreted together. There is general agreement, however, that Dürer, in these three master engravings, wished to raise his artistic intensity to the highest level, which he succeeded in doing. Finished form and richness of conception and mood merge into a whole of classical perfection.

See also: Renaissance Art VIEW IMAGE LIST "Albrecht Duerer was without doubt the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance. Living in Nuremberg, half-way between the Netherlands and Italy, he found inspiration in the work of painters of both the major European artistic centres of his time. But rather than simply imitating what others were doing, Duerer was very much an innovator. He is, for example, the first artist who is known to have painted a self-portrait and to have done a landscape painting of a specific scene. "The range and versatility of Duerer's work is astonishing. His woodcuts and engravings made him famous across Europe and he is still considered to be the greatest printmaker of all time. As an oil painter, Duerer was equally successful at religious and secular subjects, producing magnificent altarpieces and powerful portraits. His drawings and watercolours are impressive for their diversity of subject-matter and the varied media in which they were produced. Duerer was to have a major influence on the development of European art.

Albrecht Durer
Born: 21 May 1471, Nuernberg Married: 1494, Agnes Frey, Nuernberg Died: 6 April 1528, Nuernberg
ALBRECHT DURER, perhaps the greatest German artist of the Renaissance era, began his career in the Imperial Free City of Nuernberg with his father, a Hungarian goldsmith who had emigrated to Germany in 1455. Despite his goldsmith origins, however, by 1484 Durer had already begun painting. In 1486 he was apprenticed to the painter and printmaker Michael Wolgumut and began to work with woodcuts and copper engravings as well. Beginning in 1490 Durer travelled widely for study, including trips to Italy in 1494 and 1505-7 and to Antwerp and the Low Countries in 1520-1. During his visit to Venice on his second Italian trip Durer was especially influenced by Giovanni Bellini and Bellini's brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna , each then near the end of his career. In The Uffizi: A Guide to the Gallery (Venice: Edizione Storti, 1980, p. 57) Umberto Fortis comments that Durer's journeys enabled him "to fuse the Gothic traditions of the North with the achievements in perspective, volumetric and plastic handling of forms, and color of the Italians in an original synthesis which was to have great influence with the Italian Mannerists."

Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence Dürer was born May 21, 1471, in Nuremberg. His father, Albrecht Dürer the Elder, was a goldsmith and his son's first art teacher. From his early training, the young Dürer inherited a legacy of 15th-century German art strongly dominated by Flemish late Gothic painting. German artists had little difficulty in adapting their own Gothic tradition to the Flemish art of Robert Campin, Jan van Eyck, and especially Rogier van der Weyden. The northern empirical (derived from observation rather than theory) approach to reality was their common bond. During the 16th century, stronger ties with Italy through trade, and the spread of Italian humanist ideas northward, infused the more conservative tradition of German art with new artistic ideas. Artists of his day, however, more visually oriented than literary figures, looked more to Dürer's engravings and woodcuts than to his writings to guide them in their attempts to modernize their art with the classicizing nudes and idealized subjects of the Italian Renaissance.

    INTRODUCTION
Albrecht Durer was a well-educated man and an experienced painter. Albrecht was a great artist in all areas of art.
    BACKGROUND
Albrecht Durer was born in 1471 and died in 1528. He was 57 years old. Albrecht was born in Nuremburg, Germany. Albrecht's father was a goldsmith. The German painter (Durer) was under great tension. He had a nervous breakdown in 1519. Albrecht had a fertile imagination and was considered a Renaissance man. Albrecht spent years in northern Italy. He experimented with new technology. He became a Protestant.
    ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Albrecht was a painter, draughtsman, goldsmith, musician and a writer. He did 200 woodcuts and 100 line engravings. Albrecht was a designer and studied anatomy, mathematics, proportions, perspective and he completed a manual of geometry. He also designed the first flying machine. Durer was a graphic artist and made religious themes and altar pieces. He was one of the first to use tempera and oil glazes. Some of his great works are his Self-Portrait and Adam and Eve.

Interpretation of this Drawing (by John Read) Early in the sixteenth century, the famous German artists and engravers, Albrecht Durer and Lucas Cranach, were influenced to some extent by alchemical ideas and symbolism, but they left no pictorial impression of an alchemist or his laboratory. Durer (1471-1528), one of the two greatest artists Germany has ever produced, was particularly skilled in drawing on the block for the wood-cutter and in engraving on copper with his own unsurpassed hand. In 1513 and 1514 he wrought three engravings on copper that will rank for all time among the world's select masterpieces of this form of art. These were "The Knight " (1513), "St. Jerome in his Study" (1514), and "Melencolia" (1514). There is no evidence that Durer had an acquaintance with alchemy so intimate as, say, that of Chaucer in an earlier age; nevertheless, alchemy formed an essential ingredient of the cultural background of his times. To contemporary men of culture in general, as to the alchemist in particular, the "Melencolia" must have appeared as a rich repository of the pictorial symbolism of alchemy. The Roman numeral "I" following the engraved title suggests at once that Durer had it in mind to design and execute a series of four copper-engravings illustrating the Four Temperaments: melancholic, phlegmatic, choleric, and sanguine. These were linked in the medieval mind with the Four Elements of the alchemists and certain other mystical groups of four, a magical number inherited from the early civilizations that flourished long before the time of Pythagoras.
