Printable Version Download PDF Cite this Page Durand, Asher B. b Jefferson Village [now Maplewood], NJ, Aug. d Jefferson Village, Sept. American painter and engraver. His early work was mainly as an engraver and he established his reputation with his print after John Trumbull's Signing of the Declaration of Independence and with portraits of eminent contemporaries. In the 1830s he turned increasingly to painting. At first he worked mainly as a portraitist, but then devoted himself to landscape, becoming a leading figure of the Hudson River School . Thomas Cole was a major source of inspiration, and Durand's most famous painting, Kindred Spirits (1849, New York Public Lib.), was painted as a memorial to him; it shows Cole (who had died the previous year) and the poet William Cullen Bryant admiring spectacular scenery in the Catskill Mountains, New York State. The exhibition opens June 6 and runs through August 29, 2004. (right: Bierstadt, Albert, In the Mountains , 1867, oil on canvas, 36 3/16 x 50 1/4 inches, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Conn.; Gift of John Junius Morgan, in memory of his mother, Juliet Pierpont Morgan, 1923.253) American Eden includes more than 50 works by 25 artists. They are sublime, powerful visions of the American landscape and hold within them ideas and beliefs that shaped the future of the nation. The Hudson River school, a group of painters active in the 19th century in New York, was the first truly American school of painting. Artists such as Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, Asher B. Durand and Albert Bierstadt, among others, created philosophically and aesthetically robust landscape scenes of young America and beyond.
