Durand Asher Brown Durand was born August 21, 1796, in Jefferson Village, New Jersey (now called Maplewood). Durand was one of eleven children. When Durand was 16 years old, he apprenticed as an engraver to Peter Maverick, studying for five years. He then became a partner in the firm, running the New York branch. After he contracted to make an engraving of the painting of the Declaration of Independence by John Trumbull, Durand secured his reputation as one of the finest engravers in the country. Durand helped found the New York Drawing Association in 1825. The next year, the Association was renamed the National Academy of Design Durand exhibited his studies from nature in the annual National Academy of Design (NAD) shows. Critics responded favorably to the fresher, naturalistic views. This break from tradition established him as a modern painter. Durand became President of the National Academy of Design and held the post from 1845 until 1861.

During the he turned to painting portraits, and then, encouraged by Thomas Cole, to landscapes. By the Durand was concentrating on landscapes exclusively. Working in New York City, he became a close colleague of Cole, and served as president of the National Academy of Design. He regularly ventured into remote areas of the Catskill, Adirondack, and White Mountains to make sketches, which he used in the landscapes composed in his studio during the winter. These works evolved from staged, largely imagined idylls to ennobled portraits of specific places, compelling in breadth and detail, showing greater focus on literal transcription of nature and less reliance on conventional formula. Chrysler, Jr. This oil on canvas painting was inspired by the Old Testament wherein Ezekiel foretells God's destruction of Gog, the infidel prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal. In the painting, Ezekiel, standing on the lower left promontory, calls forth at God's command predatory birds and wild beasts to devour Gog's troops. The work was recently purchased by the Walton Family Foundation in a silent bid auction from its former owner, the New York Public Library. In appreciation of Bryant's eulogy of Cole, who died an untimely death from pneumonia in 1848, New York dry-goods merchant and art collector Jonathan Sturges commissioned Durand to capture the friendship of the painter and poet. The painting remained in the Bryant family until Bryant's daughter, Julia, donated it to the New York Public Library in early 1904. Sturges' request that Cole and Bryant be shown as "kindred spirits" was inspired by the English poet John Keats' "Sonnet to Solitude," which celebrates the ameliorative aspects of nature and concludes: Yet the sweet converse of an innocent mind
