(born Jul-28-1887, died Oct-02-1968) France what is this? (Henri Robert) Marcel Duchamp was born on July 28, 1887 in Blainville, Cervon in Normandy. As early as 1902 Marcel Duchamp was painting in the garden of the family home. A pioneer of Dadaism and Surrealism, Duchamp was equally passionate about chess. In 1923 he concentrated on playing and his strength became near master class. He played in the French Championships and also in the Olympiads 1928-1933. In 1925 he had his chances to become the French chess champion of France. He started well in the tournament, but blundered in a winning position against the eventual victor Robert Crepeaux and then, perhaps deflated, lost to Casier. Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp was a French chessplayer and renouwned artist. He was born in Blainville-Crevon, France on July 28, 1887 and died on October 2, 1968. He came from a family of artists and chess players. He had 4 brothers and 2 sisters. In 1898, at the age of 11, he first played chess with his older brothers Gaston (Jacques Villon) (1875-1963) and Raymond (1876-1918). In 1904, Jacques Villon etched La Partie d'echecs , featuring 17-year-old Marcel Duchamp playing chess with his sister, Suzanne (1889-1963). In 1905, Marcel was studying art at the Acadamie Julien in Paris. He failed the entrance exams to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, then worked as a cartoonist. In 1910, he began painting chess players playing chess. One canvas shows his brothers playing chess in their garden while his two sisters look on. In 1911, he created a series of at least six drawings and two Cubist paintings of his brothers playing chess. In April, 1912, he painted Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2

By presenting unaltered, everyday objects as sculpture, Duchamp radically changed the course of modern art. He also helped introduce the European art movements of cubism and dada to the United States, and was influential in the surrealist movement of the 1920s and 1930s. His emphasis on the intellectual aspects of art influenced many succeeding artists, especially those connected with the 1960s art movement known as conceptual art Born in Blainville, Duchamp enjoyed a comfortable childhood in a family unusually sympathetic to the arts: his grandfather was an engraver, and three of his five siblings (

Continued from Next Section Using the Mona Lisa to mediate between high and low culture is not new. Soon after the turn of the 20th century, the Dada movement revolted against the "high cultural" content of the visual arts. In doing this, in some cases the Dadaists elevated the mundane into the world of the "aesthetic" by forcing observers to look at everyday objects in surprisingly new contexts. At other times cherished objects and symbols were ridiculed. The most well known act of degrading a famous work of art is probably Marcel Duchamp's L.H.O.O.Q. , a cheap postcard-sized reproduction of the Mona Lisa upon which in 1919 the artist drew a mustache and a thin goatee beard. On one hand L.H.O.O.Q. must be understood as one of Duchamp's "readymade" works of art works that he didn't make, but which, by having been placed intellectually within a conceptual framework of "Art," he forces the observer to see ordinary objects from new perspectives. In this way their innate aesthetic contents would make themselves manifest as happens in one of his more infamous works: the urinal turned on its side and rebaptized "Fountain." However, to most observers, instead of elevating the ordinary, Marcel's Mona Lisa works in the opposite direction; it defaces (literally) that which has been cherished, and brings a famous work down to the level of vulgar vandalism and cheap reproduction. The title makes the point, too, but obscurely, since when pronounced in French "L.H.O.O.Q." reports as a pun on the phrase "Elle a chaud au cul," which translates colloquially as "She is hot in the ass."

60. The Richard Mutt Case: Looking For Marcel Duchamp's Fountain
However, in researching a subject like marcel duchamp s now infamous Fountain (1917), it quickly becomes obvious that there are many different narratives
http://www.artscienceresearchlab.org/articles/betacourt.htm
What happened to Fountain following its non-exhibition is mysterious; it disappeared. William Glackens may have broken it (Ira Glackens' Biography of his father); Marcel Duchamp may have sold it to Walter Arensberg, who then lost it (Camfield)[31]; Katherine Drier comments in a letter dated 13 April that Fountain was stolen, (although a later letter suggests that Fountain had reappeared).... Camfield, William. Fountain , (Houston: Houston Fine Art Press, 1989). A note in the Green Box reads: "Specifications for ‘Ready-mades.’ By planning for a moment to come (on such a day, such a date, such a minute), ‘to inscribe a readymade’ The readymade can then be looked for . (with all kinds of delays). The important thing then is just this matter of timing, this snapshot effect, like a speech delivered on no matter what occasion but at such and such an hour. It is a kind of rondez-vous." in Pierre Cabanne, , (Paderborn: Terrail, 1997) p. 106.
