Marcel Duchamp(1887-1968) French-American artist, poet, and chess player, whose radical ideas have been a continuous source of inspiration for avant-garde movements, from Dada and Surrealism to conceptual art. In a poll in 2004, Duchamp's porcelain urinal, a ready-made work first shown in an expedition in 1917, was voted by British art experts the most influential artwork of the 20th century. "I threw the urinal in their faces and now they come and admire it for its beauty," Duchamp once commented. The last 40 years of his life Duchamp devoted mostly to chess, film and collaborations on exhibitions. "All in all, the creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act." (from Salt Seller , ed. by Michel Sanouillet and Elmer Peterson, 1973)

THE CREATIVE ACT
by M arcel D uchamp
L et us consider two important factors, the two poles of the creation of art: the artist on the one hand, and on the other the spectator who later becomes the posterity. T o all appearances, the artist acts like a mediumistic being who, from the labyrinth beyond time and space, seeks his way out to a clearing. I f we give the attributes of a medium to the artist, we must then deny him the state of consciousness on the esthetic plane about what he is doing or why he is doing it. All his decisions in the artistic execution of the work rest with pure intuition and cannot be translated into a self-analysis, spoken or written, or even thought out. T .S. Eliot, in his essay on "Tradition and Individual Talent", writes: "The more perfect the artist, the more completely separate in him will be the man who suffers and the mind which creates; the more perfectly will the mind digest and transmute the passions which are its material." M illions of artists create; only a few thousands are discussed or accepted by the spectator and many less again are consecrated by posterity. I n the last analysis, the artist may shout from all the rooftops that he is a genius: he will have to wait for the verdict of the spectator in order that his declarations take a social value and that, finally, posterity includes him in the primers of Artist History.

The Rotoreliefs were first shown at opening of the 33rd concours lepine, the salon des inventions, at the parc des expositions, porte de varsailles. Duchamp has taken a tiny stand of three square meters to exhibit Rotorelief. In a joint venture with Henri Pierre Roche, 500 sets of six colored disks have been produced and were designed to be placed on a gramophone. Turningat the certain speed the disk give an impression of depth, Duchamp suggested that the optical illusions becomes more intense when viewed with only one eye.
Situated in alley F, stand number 147, some of the disks were turning horizontally and some vertically. Sandwitched between incinators and a rubbish-compressing machine on the left and an instant vegetable chopper on the right, Duchamps invention, which is awarded an "honorable mention" in the industrial art categoly, goes practically unnoticed by a public whose interest is in a serch for more practical and useful gadgets.
Wall hanging units were later foblicated on the occasion of 1965 Milan reproduction. It consists of a wooden box (37.5 x 37.5 x 8.5 cm) which is covered with black velvet; the motor is behind, in the center of the box, and drives a revolving magnetized turntable which enables one to use, according to the disks to be shown, either one of the two circular magnetised black flames of different width supplied with this unit.
Set of six disks (20cm), which a drawing on each side printed in color by offset lithography, to be seen as they rotate at the speed of 33rpm.

Borrowed from Karl and Amy Olson's homepage via the Anonymizer. Marcel Duchamp (28 July 1887 - 2 October 1968) was a French painter and theorist, a major proponent of DADA, and one of the most influential figures of avant-garde 20th-century art. After a brief early period in which he was influenced chiefly by Paul CEZANNE and Fauve color, Duchamp developed a type of symbolic painting, a dynamic version of facet CUBISM (similar to FUTURISM), in which the image depicted successive movements of a single body. It closely resembled the multiple exposure photography documented in Eadweard MUYBRIDGE's book The Horse in Motion (1878). In 1912, Duchamp painted his famous Nude Descending A Staircase, which caused a scandal at the 1913 ARMORY SHOW in New York City. In the same year he developed, with Francis PICABIA and Guillaume APOLLINAIRE, the radical and ironic ideas that independently prefigured the official founding of Dada in 1916 in Zurich. In Paris in 1914, Duchamp bought and inscribed a bottle rack, thereby producing his first ready-made, a new art form based on the principle that art does not depend on established rules or on craftsmanship. Duchamp's ready-mades are ordinary objects that are signed and titled, becoming aesthetic, rather than functional, objects simply by this change in context. Dada aimed at departure from the physical aspect of painting and emphases in ideas as the chief means of artistic expression. In 1915, Duchamp moved to New York City, where he was befriended by Louise and Walter Arensberg and their circle of artists and poets, which constituted New York Dada. That same year he began his major work, The Large Glass, or The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1915-23), a construction of wire and painted foil fitted between plates of transparent glass. In 1918 he completed his last major painting, Tu m', a huge oil and graphite on canvas, a unique combination of real and painted objects and illusionistic and flat space. Following his maxim never to repeat himself, Duchamp "stopped" painting (1923) after 20 works and devoted himself largely to the game of chess.

Marcel Duchamp in His Own Words
This documentary on one of the most important artists of the twentieth century opens with the familiar image of Duchamp studying a chess board - he had a lifelong passion for chess. In recordings made in 1968 in Cadaques, Spain, shortly before his death, Duchamp discusses his work, jokes and reminisces, saying, `I discarded brushes and explored the mind more than the hands.' This informative and charming film is divided into sections: `The Art' explores Duchamp's early drawing, painting, and Cubist period, including Nude Descending a Staircase and The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (Large Glass) ; `The Object and the Gesture' is concerned with his `readymade' objects, `readymade reciprocals,' and Dada period, including humorous puns such as Mona Lisa's `LHOOQ'; and the final section chronicles the last major work of his life, Given: 1 The Waterfall, 2 Illuminating Gas. This mixed-media assemblage of different materials, techniques and forms was erected at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1969. Built to be viewed by only one person at a time, it was produced in secret in the last years of Duchamp's life. Lewis Jacobs approaches the artist through a visual style that reflects Duchamp's energy and humor. Using extensive collage, documentation of his work, photographs, and film footage of the artist, he creates a visual complement to Duchamp's fascinating dialog. `... Duchamp's narration provides a feeling of intimacy; the viewer is treated to his views on various periods in early twentieth-century art ... commands the viewer to pay attention and watch carefully so as not to miss anything ... an excellent and very important addition for any art library. Just to hear Duchamp's comments alone is worth its purchase. Highly recommended'.

banner: portrait Marcel Duchamp [Photo Richard Avedon]. Born on July 28, 1887, the grandson of a painter, Marcel Duchamp had two brothers, Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Jacques Villon and a sister, Suzanne Duchamp, who were also artists; but unlike his relatives, he turned his ironic scepticism about art into an extraordinary career built on a remarkeble small amount of work. Abandoning painting for three dimensional art, Duchamp offered such everyday objects as 'Roue de bicyclette' [=Bicycle Wheel] and 'Egouttoir (or Porte-bouteilles)' [=Bottle Rack] as "ready-mades". In 1915 he went to New York for the first time and became the center of the circle of painters around the 'Stieglitz' Gallery. The group adapted an "anti-art" attitude and was thus a movement parallel to European dada. During these years he worked on 'La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même' [=The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass)], which is often regarded as his single most important piece. With courage based upon self-confidence, he submitted a urinal titled 'Fountain' and signed "R. Mutt" to the 1917 exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, which he had co-founded. When the exhibition orgainzers refused to accept it, he resigned. Similarly, to a Dada exhibition in Paris in 1920 Duchamp submitted a full-color reproduction of Leonardo's 'La Gioconda' [=Mona Lisa] to which he added a beard and a mustache; he named it 'L.H.O.O.Q.' (Elle a chaud au cul). Together with Katherina Dreier he founded the "Société anonyme" for the propagation of modern art in America; preference was given to anti-traditional, cubist, futurist and dadaist works.
