Marcel Duchamp pronounced [maʀsɛl dyˈʃɑ̃] July 28 October 2 ) was a French artist (he became an American citizen in 1955) whose work and ideas had considerable influence on the development of post- World War II Western art, and whose advice to modern art collectors helped shape the tastes of the Western art world. While he is most often associated with the Dada and Surrealism movements, his participation in Surrealism was largely behind the scenes, and after being involved in New York Dada, he barely participated in Paris Dada. Thousands of books and articles attempt to interpret Duchamp's artwork and philosophy, but in interviews and his writing, Duchamp only added to the mystery. The interpretations interested him as creations of their own, and as reflections of the interpreter.

Marcel Duchamp's stature in history of art has grown steadily since the 1930's, largely because several artistic movements have embraced him as their founding father.
But although his influence is comparable only to that of Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp continues to be relatively unknown outside his narrow circle of followers.
    Avant-garde
In fact, Marcel Duchamp was at the center of all of the major artistic debates of his time, and although he came to be associated with a variety of avant-garde art forms, Marcel Duchamp, always retained an inimitable individuality. His two great preoccupations were the nature of scientific truth and a feeling for love with its natural limit, death. Marcel Duchamp's works all speak of eroticism in a way that pushes the socially acceptable to its outer limits.
    Influence of Marcel Duchamp

Interesting Marcel Duchamp had a lifelong passion for chess. He once said "I am still a victim of chess. It has all the beauty of art - and much more. It cannot be commercialized. Chess is much purer than art in its social position."
Marcel Duchamp is one of the most interesting and innovative artists of the 20th century. It became Duchamp's goal to abandon "retinal" art -art that only please to the eye- and wanted to create a new kind of art, one which would engage the mind.

French-born modernist artist and a leader of the Dada movement in New York City who was the first to exhibit commonplace objects as art. His paintings include Nude Descending a Staircase (1912). Individuality The individual, man as a man, man as a brain, if you like, interests me more than what he makes, because I've noticed that most artists only repeat themselves.

Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), French artist. Time (New York, 10 March 1952). Duchamp had given up painting in favor of chess thirty years before. Chess The chess pieces are the block alphabet which shapes thoughts; and these thoughts, although making a visual design on the chess-board, express their beauty abstractly, like a poem. . . . I have come to the personal conclusion that while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists.

    Biography:

Marcel Duchamp studied in Paris, where he acquired the stimulus of Cézanne and the Fauves. He later combined the properties of Cubism and Futurism, to create a revolutionary piece entitled Nude Descending a Staircase. Duchamp was also the creator of the ready-made in 1913 , an everyday object transformed by its context. For example, in Duchamp’s 1917 piece, Fountain, he exhibited a unmodified urinal as his sculpture. In 1915, he moved to New York and became an influential figure in American Dadaism. His later works were intending to be playful and humorous, but also rebellions against the stiff nature of the art world.

See also: Dada/Surrealism Text from Janis Mink, " Marcel Duchamp, 1887-1968: Art as Anti-Art "The Large Glass is something like a department store window in size, and relates to the changing use of glass and metal in the architecture of the time. However, Duchamp uses it as a non-referential surface upon which some of the isolated components, such as the chocolate grinder and the glider, are shown with painstakingly convincing perspective. One is reminded of the disembodied reality reflected in store windows. Indeed, a note dated 1913 from the White Box deals exclusively with shop windows and ends with the comment, "No obstinacy, ad absurdum, of hiding the coition through a glass pane with one or many objects of the shop window. The penalty consists in cutting the pane and in feeling regret as soon as possession is consummated. Q.E.D." And also, "I. Show case with sliding glass panes - place some FRAGILE objects inside. - Inconvenience-narrowness-reduction of space, i.e. way of being able to experiment in 3 dimensions as one operates on planes in plane geometry."

    SELECTED WORKS
Marcel Duchamp, French Dada artist, whose small but controversial output exerted a strong influence on the development of 20th-century avant-garde art. Born on July 28, 1887, in Blainville, brother of the artist Raymond Duchamp-Villon and half brother of the painter Jacques Villon, Duchamp began to paint in 1908. After producing several canvases in the current mode of Fauvism, he turned toward experimentation and the avant-garde, producing his most famous work, Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (Philadelphia Museum of Art) in 1912; portraying continuous movement through a chain of overlapping cubistic figures, the painting caused a furor at New York City's famous Armory Show in 1913. He painted very little after 1915, although he continued until 1923 to work on his masterpiece, The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1923, Philadelphia Museum of Art), an abstract work, also known as The Large Glass, composed in oil and wire on glass, that was enthusiastically received by the surrealists. In sculpture, Duchamp pioneered two of the main innovations of the 20th century
