Contact us 'The Kelpie' 1913 Herbert James Draper (1864 - 1920) Oil on canvas 135 x 193cm Accession Number LL3619 Kelpies were supposed to haunt rivers and lakes. They would delight in causing the drowning of travellers and sailors. They were a popular theme for artists around the beginning of the 20th century. Many artists, however, seemed unaware of their sinister aspects and portrayed them more as harmless nymphs. Draper's Kelpie, although not overtly malevolent, seems more than a mere nymph. She still retains something of an air of menace as she surveys her river. The painting received a mixed reception when first exhibited. Many critics felt the figure too modern for such a mythical subject. Herbert James Draper Draper's career started at the St John's Wood Art School (we mention this only because of the wonderfully atmospheric class picture in Toll's biography ). He then went on the the RA Schools, followed by various excursions to and studies in both Paris and Rome during the years from to , winning a travelling scholarship in with his first oil exhibited at the RA, 'An episode of the deluge'. At one time he considered settling in Rome but Leighton , who seems to have taken a positive interest in the young artist, advised aginst this departure. During the Draper supplemented his painting career with some book illustration, and with various romantic episodes, including a brief attachment to Richmond's niece. But in he rather sensibly married. Although not especially unconventional in appearance, his wife Ida seems daringly to have modelled topless at least once (see Toll, p.89), and the uxorial pencil makes her look far sexier than either contemporary photographs or her formal portrait, by the same hand, would suggest. With 'The sea maiden' of , Draper began a series of large paintings which he continued to produce until a year or two before he died. The structure of his major pictures is remarkably constant: they are mostly built around a relatively small number of nude or partly clad figures, mainly but not exclusively women, and hung lightly on classical or mythological pegs. There is very little of the elaborate archaeological scaffolding which other painters used to reinforce the antique tone of their pictures, and in many of Draper's paintings this element is replaced by water: fresh or salt providing different flavours.

Herbert James Draper (1864-1920) Herbert James Draper. Herbert James Draper was a late follower of the Pre-Raphaelites and the Classicists whose paintings are often similar to those of John William Waterhouse , featuring beautiful innocent-looking girls with long dark hair. His work also shows the influence of Lord Leighton and Burne-Jones He was born in London and studied science before turning to art, first at St John's Wood School, and then at the RA Schools (from 1884), where he won a prize for decoration of a public building with a scheme which was later carried out at Guys Hospital, London. In 1889 he won a Royal Academy travelling scholarship, and went to Spain, Italy, France, Holland and Belgium. He actually decided to live abroad to paint in the beautiful light of Italy, but wrote to Lord Leighton first to ask his advice. Leighton - no stranger to travel - advised him that there was no light for painting like the light of an English summer, and this was enough to persuade the younger man to abandon the life on the Continent. Draper married a Miss Ida Williams, and they had one daughter. From 1896 they lived in Abbey Road, St John's Wood, London, neighbours of
