The Doyle diary: The last great Conan Doyle mystery : with a Holmesian investigation into the strange and curious case of Charles Altamont Doyle Charles Altamont Doyle
. A diary written by Arthur Conan Doyle's father in 1889 at the Montrose Royal Lunatic Asylum, where he was committed for a combination of alcoholism, depression, fatigue, and epilepsy. The diary was bought as part of a lot in the dispersal of household goods at the Doyle family country retreat in 1955, and stored thereafter in a children's playroom until 1977, when it was shown to a dealer who realized it was a major find. Profusely illustrated with Charles Doyle's sketches and watercolors.

Tabes Dorsalis While a medical student, Conan Doyle was deeply impressed by the skill of his professor, Dr. Joseph Bell, in observing the most minute detail regarding a patient's condition. This master of diagnostic deduction became the model for Conan Doyle's literary creation, Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared in "A Study in Scarlet" in Beeton's Christmas Annual of 1887. Dr. Kittle and Dr. Doyle—
Kinsmen Through Medicine
and Belle Letters
By Robert Cotner Caxtonian March 1997 here is a kinship between Caxtonian Fred Kittle and English litterateur, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that transcends the usual relationship of collector and the one collected. It is safe to say that few know Dr. Doyle as Dr. Kittle does. Both were trained as physicians, both cultivated broad interests from their earliest years, and both surrounded themselves with the legacies of literary and artistic accomplishment. Kittle's Doyle collection began in the mid-1950s, when he acquired the original manuscript of Doyle's, The Romance of Medicine , a 19-page, handwritten medical lecture that Doyle gave on October 3, 1910, at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, London. Kittle himself is currently working on his own manuscript of a book that will delineate all of the particulars about The Romance of Medicine and that will include in its context a reprinting of Doyle's own hand-written text. The study will be published by the Arthur Conan Doyle Society this spring. Between the acquisition of his first manuscript and his most recent, Kittle has become, while assembling what is recognized as one of the world's finest Doyle collections, a late-20th-Century comrade of Doyle, a scholar in his own right on the life, times, and work of the world's greatest detective-writer and his family.

Author Biography: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
" In 1855, Charles Altamont and Mary Foley Doyle were married. Four years later, on May 22, 1859, Mary gave birth to Arthur Conan Doyle in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was one of ten children, of which seven survived to adulthood. The Doyle family were Catholic with roots in Ireland. Arthur's father was a civil servant most of his life, working for the Edinburgh Office of Works. Arthur's mother ran a boarding house. Arthur entered Hodder Prep, a Jesuit-run school, in 1868. Two years later, he moved to Stonyhurst public school, another Jesuit-run educational institution. At Stonyhurst, he was noted for his untidiness and his determination to go his own way. His nature responded to kindness and rebelled against threats. Arthur spent a good portion of his time in the headmaster's office. The only suggestion of a literary nature during this time was a year spent as editor of the Stonyhurst school magazine. [Continued]

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Can a writer be too successful? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle might have asked himself this question when his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes, became more powerful than his creator. Like Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, Conan Doyle could not control the force he'd unleashed upon the world. Readers believed in the fictional detective's existence so ardently that they wrote to him about real cases and mourned his sudden death a ploy by Conan Doyle to free himself for more lofty literary pursuits. But Holmes would not die; the public would not let him. Conan Doyle revived him for his reading public, but forbade mention of his name within earshot. He spent his last years marginalized and misunderstood while his famous creation grew ever more beloved.
A Born Storyteller
Born on May 22, 1859, to Mary and Charles Altamont Doyle, Conan Doyle was one of 10 children, seven of whom would survive into adulthood (and two of whom were given the compound surname Conan Doyle in honor of a paternal uncle). The youngest son of renowned caricaturist John Doyle, Charles was outshone by his brothers James, Henry, and Richard in professional achievement. While Charles worked as an Edinburgh civil servant, brother James was the author of

Arthur Conan Doyle was born at Picardy Place, Edinburgh in 1859. Both his parents Charles Altamont Doyle and Mary (Foley) Doyle were Roman Catholics.
Doyle married Louise Hawkins in 1884.
Doyle studied medicine at Edinburgh University and he graduated as a doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practiced medicine at Southsea near Portsmouth in Hampshire until 1891 when he started writing full time. Doyle's published his first story about Sherlock Holmes, “A Study in Scarlet” in 1887. He wrote the novel in three weeks in 1886. The second Sherlock Holmes story, “The Sign of the Four” followed and The Strand Magazine started to publish 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' in July 1891. The Sherlock Holmes stories became very popular, and Doyle decided to discontinue the series about the famous detective. The author killed his legendary detective Sherlock Holmes in “The Final Problem”, which was published at the end of 1893. During the South African War (1899-1902) Arthur Conan Doyle served as a doctor in a field hospital. During this period he wrote “The Great Boer War”. Doyle returned to England in 1902 and was knighted. He published another Sherlock Holmes story “The Hound of the Baskervilles” in 1902. He continued to write stories about Holmes and Watson.

"... In every high profession - be it law, medicine, the Army, or literature - there are certain unwritten laws - a gentlemanly etiquette which is binding upon all, but most binding upon those who have a claim to stand among the leaders of the profession. If those who are successful advertise their own wares, and use the machinery of the Press in order to whet curiosity about their own book before it has come into the hands of the critics, the young aspirant naturally comes to imagine this is the cause of the success, and by his imitating the same tactics the whole tone of the profession becomes lowered."

Books by Arthur Conan Doyle Shop used books at Biblio.com British writer, creator of Sherlock Holmes, the best-known detective in literature and the embodiment of scientific thinking. Doyle himself was not a good example of a rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world. 'This is indeed a mystery,' I remarked. 'What do you imagine that it means?'

Arthur Conan Doyle and family
In 1890 Arthur left Portsmouth to pursue a practice in Upper Wimpole Street as an eye specialist. It was not successful, however, and it is rumoured that not a single patient called on his services. Fortunately by this time his writing was becoming more profitable and in 1891 he decided to give up medicine to concentrate on writing. His eldest son, Arthur Alleyne Kingsley, was born in 1892. Louise was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1893 and, although she was only initially given a few months to live, Arthur took great care of her welfare until her death in 1906. He built a substantial new house, Undershaw, at Hindhead in Surrey for the family, as he believed that the air there would be beneficial. Arthur was devastated by the death of his eldest son, known as Kingsley, in 1918. Although badly wounded on the first day of the battle of the Somme, Kingsley was in relatively good health when he was stuck down by the Spanish influenza epidemic. Arthur remained very active throughout the 1920s, particularly promoting his spiritualist beliefs, before suffering from heart disease from which he died on the 7th July 1930. He was buried initially at Windlesham before being moved to Minstead in the New Forest to lie with his second wife, Jean. She died in 1940. Arthur Conan Doyle 1859-1930: Biography
Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was institutionalised. He died in an asylum in 1893. Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Doyle was educated in Jesuit schools and later studied at Edinburgh University, qualifying as a doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practiced medicine until 1891, when he became a full time writer. Creativity was apparent in Doyle's ancestry: his grandfather was a famous caricaturist and his uncle was a well-known illustrator. Doyle's father was an architect, designer and book illustrator. Doyle himself was an admirer of Edgar Allan Poe and Emile Gaboriau. In developing his own literary character, Doyle based Sherlock Holmes on Doctor Joseph Bell, a surgeon and teacher he had studied with while attending Edinburgh University. Dr. Bell had the uncanny ability to reveal a patient's symptoms, diagnose patients and report on their origins before they would speak a word to him about their afflictions. Sir Henry Littlejohn, who taught forensic medicine to Doyle also made a large impression and contributed to the development of Holmes' character. As far as Holmes' name, his last name may have been based on American jurist and fellow doctor Oliver Wendell Holmes and his first name may have come from Alfred Sherlock, a prominent violinist of his time. Dr. John Watson, a fellow Southsea doctor and Portsmouth Literary and Scientific Society member who served time in Manchuria, received the honour of having Holmes' partner named for him.
