Dr. and Mrs. Milton Lurie Kramer, Class of 1936, Collection; bequest of Helen Kroll Kramer. 77.62.2 A Cornell alumnus (Class of 1903), Arthur Dove began his career as a successful illustrator for popular magazines of the time: Harper's Saturday Evening Post, Life , and Collier's . After he had saved enough money, he traveled to Paris in 1908, where he was influenced by the Fauves. He returned to New York City in 1909 and in 1910 was included in a group exhibition entitled "Younger American Painters" at Gallery 291, owned and operated by the famous art dealer and photographer Alfred Stieglitz. By 1912, Dove had had his first one-man show at 291 called "Abstractions"; with Kandinsky and Kupka, Dove can claim to have created the first completely nonrepresentational painting. More typical, however, are the canvases Dove created in the 1920s when he started to introduce a series of symbols for, most notably, the sun, moon, and sea. His various odd jobs as farmer and lobsterman, along with the several years he lived on a boat, connected him intimately with these elemental aspects of nature.
Alfie's Delight was named for the pleasure that his close friend and fellow painter Alfred Maurer found in the work.

    Abstract
Arthur Dove created a series of intimate yet vivid color landscape sketches late in his career, between 1942 and 1944, while living in a one-room cottage in Centerport, Long Island, as he recovered from heart surgery and illness. More than one hundred ninety of these sketches now reside in collections throughout the United States, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. Given the complexities of Dove's paint mixtures, media identification based solely on visual characteristics and microscopic examination has proven unreliable and often inaccurate. To better understand Dove's working methods and more securely identify the design materials in the 1942-44 sketches, four of the twenty-seven held by the Philadelphia Museum of Art were examined using instrumental analysis. Techniques utilized in this study included Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (MFTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), polarizing light microscopy (PLM), stereomicroscopy, and visual examination by normal and ultraviolet illumination. var addthis_pub = 'CurrierMuseum'; Interpretive text from Exploring American Art: An Online Resource for the American Collections An important figure in the history of modern art in the United States, Arthur Garfield Dove was among the first to paint in an entirely abstract mode. Born to upper-middle-class parents in Canandaigua, New York, the artist spent much of his childhood in nearby Geneva. After graduating from Cornell University in 1903, Dove went to New York City, where he hoped to work as a freelance illustrator. His talents found a ready market among magazine publishers and until about 1930, Dove relied on illustration as his principal means of support. Typical of Dove's compositions, Snow and Water is an abstract image that hovers on the edge of representation. In much of his art, Dove began with his observations of nature, transforming them into a personal language of symbols and poetically suggestive forms. Here, rounded, domelike shapes suggest storm clouds while a wavy band of blue along the lower edge of the panel evokes a wind-whipped sea. More open to interpretation are the rectilinear and triangular forms that cluster around the ostensible "horizon." Rocks, buildings, or perhaps boats, their indeterminate quality allows the viewer free rein in determining the ultimate meaning of the painting.

    Andrew Wyeth: Unknown Terrain

The Whitney Museum of American Art has a problem. I mean its name: it is stuck with all this American art. How provincial! Right now, the Whitney does not seem to mind a bit. In fact, it wallows in provincialism, or at least the original provinces. This spring it showed Arthur Dove , an early modernist who left for New England as if to hide from Cubism. And now its summer extravaganza features Andrew Wyeth's landscapes , along with a rehanging of the permanent collection so conservative that even Wyeth might like it. Has American art no way out of the back woods? Maybe, I shall argue, the Whitney can use a better sense of time and place. I might as well start with the present: what could be tricky about showcasing American art?
    Bunkering down
America definitely does not face a shortage of artists. Try to support yourself painting, assuming you can find affordable studio space even in Brooklyn. New York has not lost its global influence either. Minimalism and Pop Art sell better abroad, and the Guggenheim Museum has paved over more of the world than Dow Chemical during the Vietnam War. Besides, Postmodernism really makes creative sense only as the perpetual death knoll of good old American Modernism and the American century Nothing fails like success, though, including American culture. It walks like world art and talks like world art, so maybe it is a duck, and the embarrassing rubber kind, too. That leaves the Whitney with a tough choice.

Biography: Don't let his real name fool you; Arthur Lake wasn't Jewish. In fact, Corbin, Kentucky has been chastized for years and years for being an extremely racist town. No black person has ever lived in Corbin and some people say there are reasons. Lots of stories float around about Corbin, Kentucky. I've actually been to Corbin several times in my travels and personally did not see anything racist about the town or its people. If you really want to know, you'll have to actually go there yourself and be your own judge. The long-running part of Dagwood Bumstead played from 1938-1950 in the Blondie movies continued this pattern into adult life. He and Penny Singleton also appeared in the half-hour Blondie radio program from CBS (and later ABC and NBC) from 1939-1946. After Penny Singleton quit the radio show, she was replaced by Arthur's real-life wife Patricia Van Cleve for the rest of its run to 1950.
