I paint dreams and visions too; the dreams and visions of my time. Painting is the effort to produce order; order in yourself. There is much chaos in me, much chaos in our time. Otto Dix As a young man you don't notice at all that you were, after all, badly affected. For years afterwards, at least ten years, I kept getting these dreams, in which I had to crawl through ruined houses, along passages I could hardly get through. Otto Dix Everybody thinks they know what art should be. But very few of them have the sense that is necessary to experience painting, that is the sense of sight, that sees colors and forms as living reality in the picture. Otto Dix I had to experience how someone beside me suddenly falls over and is dead and the bullet has hit him squarely. I had to experience that quite directly. I wanted it. I'm therefore not a pacifist at all - or am I?

The eldest son of an iron foundry worker, like Kollwitz he was exposed to art from an early age; his mother had written poetry in her youth, and he had a cousin who was a painter. In 1910, he entered the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts and supported himself as a portrait painter. As Reinheld Heller observes in his article on Dix in The Grove Dictionary of Art Der Krieg / The War , published in 1924.

Hell and afterwards: prints by Otto Dix and Max Beckmann depicting World War and its aftermath make a powerful, unsettling exhibition at the Neue Galerie in New York
Apollo Sept, 2005 by David Platzer Although Otto Dix and Max Beckmann are sometimes seen as contrasting artists, a small yet powerful one-room exhibition of two print portfolios, Dix's Der Krieg (War) and Beckmann's Die Holle (Hell) at New York's Neue Galerie reveals analogies between the two, for all their differences of style and approach. Both were steeped in the German tradition of Durer and Grunewald and this helped them to portray the horrors of the war with unusual exactitude. Both had an urge to portray reality in all its facets, however unpalatable.

      Otto Dix, Master of Disguise
By David Galloway Published: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1991 STUTTGART: With a characteristic passion for well-rounded numbers, Germans are celebrating the 100th birthday of Otto Dix. They are also re-evaluating this controversial modernist painter, whose achievements were once sliced up like so much ideological Kuchen. East Germany honored Dix,who died in 1969, as a proletarian prodigy who did battle against the evils of fascism, while the West saw him primarily as an ingenious technician and uncompromising chronicler of the excesses of the 1920s.

Amy Winehouse: When self-destruction makes a public appearance Thomas Langmann, a hot young producer, with 3 new films Heath Ledger, actor, dies at 28 Quietly but systematically, over the last decade the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen has acquired 400 paintings, watercolors, drawings and graphics - a number of which were thought to have vanished. The Friedrichshafen collection thus offers an instructive complement to the Dix retrospective in Stuttgart. The house in Gera wherehis parents were renting rooms at the time of his birth is being converted to an Otto Dix Museum - a project inaugurated by East German functionaries and now lagging conspicuously behind schedule. The spacious house in Hemmenhofen, overlooking Lake Constance, where Dix sought refuge after the Nazi takeover, has already opened its doors to the public. The town of Albstadt is now exhibiting works on paper, and Dresden, where Dix taught until his ouster in 1933, plans a birthday retrospective from its extensive holdings.

Tbilissi (Tiflis) In co-operation with Goethe-Institut Tbilissi The direct confrontation with the war at the front lines was so grave for the machine-gunner Otto Dix, so horrific, that this experience in fact marked him for life, and it was a major influence as well on his entire life's work. More than 600 drawings from the years 1914 to 1918 were done at various theatres of war in Belgium, France and Russia, in the course of his military service. These protocols of war, created on the spot and of high artistic value, together with his own memories of the horrors of World War I, also formed the basis of a later grandiose serial work entitled "The War", published in 1924 by Karl Nierendorf in Berlin. The cycle, consisting of fifty separate drawings and often compared to Goya's Desastres de la Guerra, does not only give an authentic and horrifying portrayal of the terrible trench fighting that took place in the great battles of this first world war-it also unmasks the moloch of war for what it truly is. This series of etchings, which ranks particularly highly among the main works of Dix's oeuvre, forms the center of attention of this exhibition.

Add to Wish List More about this title Back to top of page The searing psychological realism of the German painter Otto Dix (1891-1969) embodies the experience of Germany between the wars - its traumatized despair and violent decadence. While Dix is best known for his paintings and etchings from this period, which focus unflinchingly on the reality of war and on the world of prostitutes and their clients, this film looks at his career as a whole, tracing his development from early Impressionist-influenced landscapes to his later phase of religiously inspired works. It explores Dix's debt to the masters of the German Renaissance and his strengths as a draughtsman and printmaker, notably in the great series of etchings 'The War'. As well as being one of the greatest war artists of any age, Dix produced many portraits that also exemplify the striking directness of his vision. As this film shows, Dix's visionary creation of art from ugliness retains both its relevance and its power to shock.

Otto DIX is a major twentieth-century German painter. He is known for his masterpiece of urban genre painting, Metropolis (1928), and the triptych, War (1932), as well as for his portraits. He depicted various aspects of life during and between the two world wars with merciless precision. His early works show the impasto paint application typical of German Expressionism, but after studying the Old Masters of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries he developed a style of precise imagery built up with layers of translucent color, which he used from 1925 to 1944. The vanitas allegory of Western still life painting, DIX obsessively explored the surface textures of objects, making the viewer aware of the interface between the outside world and the inner self. Franz ROH, a photographer and art historian who was a contemporary of DIX, referred to this surface-oriented tendency of European realism after World War I as Magischer Realismus (Magic Realism) in his book, Nachexpressionismus Post-Expressionism List of Works

This is a special exhibition. It is both confronting and emotionally powerful. It will be controversial but it is an exhibition which must be seen.
the scale is vast. It is horrific. It is awful. It is deeply human.
As a contrast World War 1 was characterized by trench warfare, grand offensives across vast trenches and fortifications 600 kilometers long, artillery and machine guns. It was bloody and brutal.
The ugliness of and, the beauty of the ugliness, the thrill of adventure and the curiosity that he captures.
At the outbreak of the Great War in 1914 Otto Dix volunteered for service in the German Army. His service was not inspired by patriotism or honour. Dix is a mysterious man. He has form and attitude mixed with a special insight. His work suggests that even in war he was pursing realism for his art.
Much later in 1963, he explained his need to experience war:

    Review Summary
German Impressionist Otto Dix made lasting images of war that, despite oppression, survive to this day. Portrait of an Artist: Otto Dix- The Painter Is the Eyes of the World examines his controversial and moving work. Dix's own experiences as a soldier during World War I shaped his artistic inspirations. Maltreatment after an injury spurred Dix to create a series of canvases depicting the reality of battle. His paintings became even more political, culminating in the early 1930s with the creation of Trench Warfare and Flanders. By then, the Nazi occupation forced Dix to abandon his art and join the German Army once again. The darkness with which Dix painted his nightmares still serves as a testament to the horror of war. ~ Sarah Ing, All Movie Guide
