The eldest son of an iron foundry worker, he was exposed to art from an early age; his mother had written poetry in her youth, and he had a cousin who was a painter. In , he entered the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts and supported himself as a portrait painter When the First World War erupted, Dix enthusiastically volunteered for the German Army. He was taken to a field artillery regiment in Dresden . In the fall of he was assigned as a non-commissioned officer of a machine-gun unit in the Western front and took part of the Battle of the Somme . He was seriously wounded several times. De Groux's vision can be placed half-way between realism and the fantastic. That of Dix sometimes verges on the nightmarish. Seen head on, close up, throwing their grenades among the barbed wire and tree roots, the masked soldiers appear inhuman, just like the surroundings which appear unreal, the No Man's Land of the trenches. It is noteworthy that Dix chose to depict not enemy, but German soldiers. In 1924, which was one of a set of 50 plates entitled War , this engraving shocked public opinion in that Dix shows a complete lack of respect for his old comrades in the fighting forces. In place of the exaltation of heroism, he prefers to denounce the savagery of the destruction.

WEIMAR'S RUTHLESS PORTRAITIST
New Show Celebrates Otto Dix
Otto Dix was one of Weimar Germany's most important artists, ruthlessly depicting both bourgeois society and the seedy underclass. Now a musuem in Stuttgart will show a comprehensive exhibition of his portraits alongside those of other important artists. The seedy underworld of Berlin in the 1920s may have been brought to the big screen with the Oscar-winning movie "Cabaret," but the blueprint for its depiction of Weimar Germany's red-light underbelly was first created by German painter Otto Dix.

His merciless pictures depicted war, bourgeois society and the bleaker side of urban life, including sexual violence and prostitution. Dix's experiences in World War I made him a ruthless realist. But he was best known for his impressionist portraits, which attempted to get under the skin of the sitter rather than merely reproduce an exact likeness. He was influenced by Dada and became a leading member of the Neue Sachlichkeit, or New Objectivity movement, along with Georg Grosz and Max Beckmann.

Otto Dix was born in Unternhaus, Germany in 1891. After attending elementary school he worked at various jobs until he was nineteen when he became a student at the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts. To help fund his education, he accepted commissions and painted portraits of the local people. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Dix volunteered for the German army and in the autumn of 1915 was sent to the Western Front where he served as a non-commissioned officer with a machine gun unit. He was at the Somme during the major allied offensive during the summer of 1916. Dix was wounded several times during the war and on one occasion nearly died when a shrapnel splinter hit him in the neck.
In 1924 Dix joined with other artists who had fought in the First World War to put on a travelling exhibition of paintings called ‘No More War’, he also produced a book of etchings, that was later described by one critic as "perhaps the most powerful as well as the most anti-war statement in modern art". In 1933 Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. Hitler and his Nazi government disliked Dix's anti-military paintings and arranged for him to be relieved from his post as art teacher at the Dresden Academy. Dix's dismissal letter said that his work "threatened to sap the will of the German people to defend themselves."

Otto Dix
(Otto Dix) Born in Unterhaus in 1891, Otto Dix lived through Germany’s most turbulent and exciting times of the early twentieth century and depicted the harsh realities of these times in his work. Some of his most famous work originated from his World War One experiences (after beginning his art studies at the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts in 1910) where he fought on various fronts in France and Russia. He once said, “…I have to experience all of life’s depths. That’s why I volunteered for war.”(The Tate Gallery 1992, p.77) Abnormally Dix concentrated on portraying the energy and spectacle of war and only represented the true horrors of war in the post-war years, when he returned to Dresden. As well as grotesquely and starkly depicting the realities of post-war German society, he also began working with portraiture, which as his career developed, became famous for its “evil eye” as he always emphasised the weaknesses and worse characteristics of his sitters from whatever class of society they came from, friends or strangers. In these early years, Dix’s style was predominantly realist in keeping with the rise of the “Neue Sachlichkeit” movement in Germany at the time. Although Dix became well known within the Dresden arts society, it was only when he moved to Düsseldorf and began two of the most significant relationships of his life, that he started to become publicly well known.

Severe economic hardship and a widespread sense of social dislocation led many German artists in the years between the wars to create images of contemporary disillusionment and decadence. Otto Dix and George Grosz became known as the leading figures in the movement called Neue Sachlichkeit (New Realism). Distinct from the preceding generation of German Expressionists, these artists emphasized urban activity and collective, rather than personal, beliefs. Neue Sachlichkeit artists often attacked the society that they felt perpetuated inequalities, but they also delighted in presenting its attractions on occasion. In this painting, Dix depicts the actress Vera Simailova, whose fashionable androgyny, feline stare, and animal crouch create an odd fusion of repulsion and seduction, opulence and vulgarity.
Woman Lying on a Leopard Skin is one in a number of penetrating portraits Dix made during the 1920s, the decade of his best
