Victorian Art in Britain Sir Frank Dicksee Obituary- The Times - October 18th 1928 Contemporary Comment: 1892 (Royal Academy Pictures) Contemporary Comment 1928 Obituary by Miss Winifred Holliday Contemporary Comment by A G Temple 1897 Francis Bernard Dicksee was born in London on the 27 th Like many other artists of the nineteenth century, his early career was spent in book and magazine illustration, including the Cornhill magazine. In 1877 the painter exhibited his famous picture “Harmony” at the Academy, where it was a great success, and was bought by the Trustees of The Chantrey Bequest for 350 guineas. Frank Dicksee’s artistic home remained the Royal Academy throughout his career, and he became ARA in 1881, and was elected a full RA ten years later. “Startled” was his Diploma work. The painter’s art, and taste were totally in sympathy with that of the public, and his career at this time was one of unbroken success. Dicksee’s pictures were often of historical scenes, involving drama, and sentiment. He was a competent portrait painter of men, and a great portrait painter of attractive women - happy was the fashionable lady who was painted by Dicksee!

Frank Bernard Dicksee From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Frank Dicksee Jump to: navigation search Frank Bernard Dicksee Romeo and Juliet by Sir Frank Dicksee Sir Frank Bernard Dicksee KCVO (b. London November 27 October 17 ) was an English Victorian painter and illustrator , best known for his pictures of dramatic historical and legendary scenes. He also was a noted painter of portraits of fashionable women, which helped to bring him success in his own time. Although not a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood many of Dicksee's paintings can be considered Pre-Raphaelite in style. Dicksee's father, Thomas Dicksee , was a painter who taught Frank as well as his brother Herbert and his sister Margaret from a young age. Dicksee enrolled in the Royal Academy in and achieved early success. He was elected to the Academy in and became its President in . He was knighted in , and named to the Royal Victorian Order by King George V in Dicksee painted the piece 'The Funeral of a Viking' in 1893, which now resides in Manchester City Art Gallery, having been there since 1928 when it was presented by Arthur Burton ESQ in memory of his mother to the Corporation of Manchester. Victorian critics gave it both positive and negative reviews, for its perfection as a showpiece and for its dramatic and somewhat staged setting, respectively. Frank Dicksee Frank Dicksee painted elegant society portraits - The Duchess of Westminster (1906) is a particularly good one - and various romantic and historical pictures, often in a somewhat Pre-Raphaelite manner. Particularly well-known (and often reproduced) is Startled (1891), showing two girls fleeing from their bath in a lake after seeing an approaching boat - this was Dicksee's Diploma painting. Chivalry (1885) shows a knight standing over a fallen opponent, while nearby, a girl tied to a tree looks apprehensively around in order to see her fate. The Magazine of Art singles this picture out for disparaging comment: "His knight has not the martial bearing and virility of the old conception of romance... The lady wants passion and humanity, and is far other than the gallant and fascinating heroines we read of ... she would probably get her to a nunnery when released, or would involve her rescuer in a metaphysical discussion." The Magic Crystal (in the Lady Lever Art Gallery , Port Sunlight) is also rather Pre-Raphaelite in style, with an overdressed girl claustrophobically overfilling the frame of the picture in the manner of
