Though he dealt largely with sacred themes, he was the first to depict human emotion, creating scenes of people in crises and making soul-searching decisions with eyes and faces full of fear, hope, rage and love. His techniques gave the stories a naturalism and moral weight rather than focusing on a show of heavenly splendor. Giotto was born into a farming family in the village of Vespignano, near Florence. Among his legends is the story that the master painter Cimabue, walking in the hills, saw the young Giotto sketching sheep on a flat rock, recognized the 10-year-old's precocious talent and gave Giotto a position in his Florentine workshop. Another story tells of the boy's early skills: once, when Cimabue had gone out, Giotto painted a fly on the nose of a figure Cimabue was painting. When the master returned, he tried repeatedly to brush away the amazingly lifelike insect.

Very little is actually known about Giotto’s life. He’s considered the father of western painting, the first in a long line of artists that set the Renaissance rolling. It’s thought that Giotto was born in a small farming community outside the city of Florence around 1267. There’s a legend that the young artist, at around twelve, was seen drawing on a rock by the great Florentine painter Cimabue, who was impressed with the boy’s ability and asked his father if he could take Giotto on as an apprentice. Cimabue took Giotto to Rome, where the young artist learned fresco. Fresco is a technique of painting where the artist paints on freshly laid still wet plaster. Frescoes are extremely cheap to create, even on a large scale. The technique also allows the artist to start over at any time, or to plaster over an area that he wants to re-do. The affordability and flexibility of this medium, combined with Giotto’s excellent drawing skills and vision, led to some of the influential works in the proto-Renaissance period. This was a time in his life when his career was at its height. This painting is 17 ¾ inches tall and 17 ¼ inches wide and uses Tempera paint on wood with a gold ground. Outstanding as a painter, sculptor, and architect, Giotto was recognized as the first genius of art in the Italian Renaissance. Giotto lived and worked at a time when people's minds and talents were first being freed from the shackles of medieval restraint. He dealt largely in the traditional religious subjects, but he gave these subjects an earthly, full-blooded life and force. The artist's full name was Giotto di Bondone. He was born about 1266 in the village of Vespignano, near Florence. His father was a small landed farmer. Giorgio Vasari, one of Giotto's first biographers, tells how Cimabue, a well-known Florentine painter, discovered Giotto's talents. Cimabue supposedly saw the 12-year-old boy sketching one of his father's sheep on a flat rock and was so impressed with his talent that he persuaded the father to let Giotto become his pupil. Another story is that Giotto, while apprenticed to a wool merchant in Florence, frequented Cimabue's studio so much that he was finally allowed to study painting.
