Giotto di Bondone is lauded as the Trecento artist responsible for the renewal of Western figurative arts with the ideals of ancient Greece . It is undocumented when Giotto di Bondone first began work. It is known, however, that Giotto di Bondone worked for prominent patrons like the Florentine banking families of the Bardi's and the Peruzzi's. Giotto di Bondone also painted frescoes for the important Christian Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi and the Basilica of San Pietro in Rome . The most well-known of Giotto di Bondone's works though were for the rich Scrovegni family of Padua
Part of Giotto di Bondone's contribution to Italian Renaissance Art was in his depiction of the concept of space, something well known to the ancient Greeks and Roman. Giotto di Bondone is credited with the re-discovery of that knowledge that was lost in the Middle Ages. In 1303-05, Giotto di Bondone decorated the Arena Chapel (Scrovegni) in

Inv. 40120 The triptych (painting in three sections) takes its name from cardinal Jacopo Caetani degli Stefaneschi, who had it painted for the old St Peter's basilica. It is painted on both sides as it was to be seen both by the priest and by the faithful. The front shows Christ enthroned with angels and cardinal Stefaneschi, between the crucifixion of St Peter on the left and the martyrdom of St Paul on the right. The predella below shows the Madonna and Child enthroned between two angels and the twelve apostles. On the back is St Peter enthroned with cardinal Stefaneschi, holding in his hands the model of the triptych, and Pope Celestine I on the central panel, and on the side panels, St James and St Paul on the left, St John the Evangelist and St Andrew on the right. Only one section of the predella remains, and this has three saints. The painting was done by Giotto with the assistance of his pupils, between 1315 and 1320.

(c.1267 - 1337)
Back to Gothic Style Giotto was the most important Italian painter of the 14th century, whose conception of the human figure in broad, rounded terms rather than in the flat, two-dimensional terms of Gothic and Byzantine styles indicated a concern for naturalism that was a milestone in the development of Western art. He was born Giotto di Bondone in Colle di Vespignano, near Florence. Details of his early life are scarce, but he probably served an apprenticeship in Florence before embarking on a career that took him to Rome, Padua (Padova), Arezzo, Rimini, Assisi, and Naples. Giotto's entire output consists of religious works, primarily altarpieces and church frescoes. Few remain in good condition, and most have disappeared entirely or have been almost wholly repainted. Others cannot be securely attributed to him and are more likely to be the work of followers or apprentices. One of his earliest and best-known attributable works is the large fresco cycle illustrating the lives of the Virgin and Christ in the Scrovegni (Arena) Chapel in Padua, which may have been completed as early as 1305 or 1306.

Giotto signed his name to only three of his paintings. His most famous attributed works are the Arena Chapel frescoes (1305-10) in Padua, the Bardi and Peruzzi Chapel frescoes in Santa Croce in Florence, and the magnificent Ognissanti Madonna for the Church of All Saints. The twenty-eight frescoes based on the life of St. Francis and located in the Upper Church of the Franciscans in Assisi are accepted as Giotto's by some art historians and denied him by others. The controversy, which has now raged for a century and a half, fills volumes and has yet to be resolved.

Giotto di Bondone/Egg Paint - from Discovering Great Artists
Giotto's (ZHEE-O-TO) paints were made from egg yolks mixed with clay, minerals, berries, or even ground insects to make colored pigments. Giotto di Bondone When Giotto was a young boy tending sheep in the mountains of northern Italy, he drew pictures to help pass the time. A traveling artist discovered Giotto's drawings and offered him an apprenticeship. There Giotto learned how to make paintbrushes and art tools, which minerals could be used to create different colors of paint, and worked on drawings and small parts of paintings. Eventually Giotto left to find work on his own. He became the chief master of cathedral building and public art in Florence, Italy. Giotto is best known for painting people who appeared three-dimensional rather than flat. Many paintings of Giotto's time were made with egg tempera paint on special panels of wood. There were no art stores, so each artist had to make paint by grinding minerals, clay, berries, or even insects into fine powder and mixing this pigment with egg yolk and water. Egg tempera makes a thin, fast drying coat of bright color. The paint is very strong and long lasting. Giotto's beautiful egg tempera paintings are over 700 years old!
Young artists explore Giotto's technique of painting with egg tempera with a homemade recipe made with crushed chalk.

Giotto Di Bondone Biography Summary: This is a brief bio of Renaissance-era painter, sculptor and architect Giotto di Bondone. Di Bondone worked primarily with religious subjects, but unlike his contemporaries, portrayed them in a more realistic light. Art History Report on Giotto Giotto di Bondone a Florentine painter, sculptor, and architect. Giotto is most famouse mainly in the traditional religious subjects but made his paintings more realistic by showing that Jesus and his followers were more human then other painters showed. Giotto was born in 1267 A.D. in a small village near Florence, Italia and lived in that area until the year of his death (1337 A.D.). Ciambue, a well-known florentine painter was said to be the man that discovered the talent of a young boy named Giotto di Bondone. It took some persueding but finely Ciambue convinced Giotto's father to allow Giotto to become a pupil. Giottos paintings are full of earthly tones and a lot of deatail for what he was working with. People however did not apreciate his paintings because they (his paintings) showed more grusome images of there Lord Jesus. In fact one time when Giotto traveled to Rimini, of which lord was malatesta, and there in the church of st. Francis, did many paintings which were thrown to the ground and destroyed. Over all his paintings were beautiful but not seen as such and this shows that "although how beautiful a artwork may be people may not see it for its beuty but for its meaning" Adam Natoli " New Jersey artist"
