Giotto di Bondone
Giotto di Bondone (c. 1267 - 1337). Florentine painter and architect. Outstanding as a painter, sculptor, and architect, Giotto was recognized as the first genius of art in the Italian Renaissance. Giotto lived and worked at a time when people's minds and talents were first being freed from the shackles of medieval restraint. He dealt largely in the traditional religious subjects, but he gave these subjects an earthly, full-blooded life and force. The artist's full name was Giotto di Bondone. He was born about 1266 in the village of Vespignano, near Florence. His father was a small landed farmer. Giorgio Vasari, one of Giotto's first biographers, tells how Cimabue, a well-known Florentine painter, discovered Giotto's talents. Cimabue supposedly saw the 12-year-old boy sketching one of his father's sheep on a flat rock and was so impressed with his talent that he persuaded the father to let Giotto become his pupil. Another story is that Giotto, while apprenticed to a wool merchant in Florence, frequented Cimabue's studio so much that he was finally allowed to study painting. The earliest of Giotto's known works is a series of frescoes (paintings on fresh, still wet plaster) on the life of St. Francis in the church at Assisi. Each fresco depicts an incident; the human and animal figures are realistic and the scenes expressive of the gentle spirit of this patron saint of animals. In about 1305 and 1306 Giotto painted a notable series of 38 frescoes in the Arena Chapel in Padua. The frescoes illustrate the lives of Jesus Christ and of the Virgin Mary. Over the archway of the choir is a scene of the Court of Heaven, and a Last Judgment scene faces it on the entrance wall. The compositions are simple, the backgrounds are subordinated, and the faces are studies in emotional expression.

Known as the father of modern painting, Giotto di Bondone earned this reputation because he broke away from strictly allegorical interpretations and painted figures that seemed human with emotions, and in execution used a flat surface in a way that suggested three-dimensional space. He treated the human body with dignity and respect. It is interesting that his peers seemed immediately to recognize and encourage this uniqueness. However, it was seventy-five years after st

    Birth Year : 1267
Death Year : 1337 Country : Italy Giotto signed his name to only three of his paintings. His most famous attributed works are the Arena Chapel frescoes (1305-10) in Padua, the Bardi and Peruzzi Chapel frescoes in Santa Croce in Florence, and the magnificent Ognissanti Madonna for the Church of All Saints. The twenty-eight frescoes based on the life of St. Francis and located in the Upper Church of the Franciscans in Assisi are accepted as Giotto's by some art historians and denied him by others. The controversy, which has now raged for a century and a half, fills volumes and has yet to be resolved. Executive summary: Preeminent 14th c. Italian Painter Italian painter, born at Vespignano in the Mugello, a few miles north of Florence, according to one account in 1276, and according to another, which from the few known circumstances of his life seems more likely to be correct, in 1266 or 1267. His father was a landowner at Colle in the commune of Vespignano, described in a contemporary document as vir praeclarus , but by biographers both early and late as a poor peasant; probably therefore a peasant proprietor of no large possessions but of reputable stock and descent. It is impossible to tell whether there is any truth in the legend of Giotto's boyhood which relates how he first showed his disposition for art, and attracted the attention of Cimabue , by being found drawing one of his father's sheep with a sharp stone on the face of a smooth stone or slate. With his father's consent, the story goes on, Cimabue carried off the boy to be his apprentice, and it was under Cimabue's tuition that Giotto took his first steps in the art of which he was afterwards to be the great emancipator and renovator. The place where these early steps can still, according to tradition, be traced, is in the first and second, reckoning downwards, of the three courses of frescoes which adorn the walls of the nave in the Upper Church of St. Francis at Assisi. These frescoes represent subjects of the Old and New Testament, and great labor, too probably futile, has been spent in trying to pick out those in which the youthful handiwork of Giotto can be discerned, as it is imagined, among that of Cimabue and his other pupils. But the truth is that the figure of Cimabue himself, in spite of

Painting. Italy. Individual Artists, A-Z. Giotto di Bondone (1267?-1337) Italian painter and architect Giotto [JAH toh] was born in a village near Florence, Italy, the son of a poor shepherd. Little is known about his early life or his beginnings as an artist, but it is known that at some point he became a student of famous Italian painter Giovanni Cimabue. It is also known that he introduced an entirely new style of painting to Italy. Prior to Giotto, Italian painters portrayed subjects in a flat, unrealistic manner. Giotto, on the other hand, painted solid, natural-looking forms. For example, to show how light shines on an object in nature, he illuminated one side of the object while painting the other side of it in shadow. Giotto produced a great number of works during his lifetime, but very few survive. It is believed, but not proven, that he first participated in the decoration of the Upper Church at Assisi. He is generally considered the first in a line of great artists who contributed to and developed the Italian Renaissance Giotto was born in poverty in the countryside near Florence , the son of Bondone, a peasant, and was himself a shepherd. Most authors believe that Giotto was his real name, and not an abbreviation of Ambrogio ( Ambrogiotto ) or Angelo ( Angelotto The legend (as reported by Giorgio Vasari in his Lives of the Artists , derived from Ghiberti 's Commentari ) holds that at the age of 12, while his father was tending the sheep, Giotto was drawing on rocks with chalk. The artist Cimabue happened along and saw young Giotto drawing a sheep, so natural and so perfect that Cimabue immediately asked Giotto's father if the boy could come with him as an apprentice to study art. His father agreed, and thus Giotto's career would have started in Cimabue's bottega . Another story in Vasari's Lives depicts Giotto as a playful apprentice, painting a fly on the nose of a figure with such skill that his teacher Cimabue made numerous attempts to brush the fly away. This legend foreshadows the life-like painted figures that would come to characterize Giotto's work.

Our first artist from the *Early Renaissance is Giotto , who is credited with "Translating painting from Greek into Latin" ... a new outward vision of the world that would replace the Medieval inward vision that stressed not the realities of this world, but a mystical/spirtual world.
The Arena Chapel is located in Padua and was commissioned by Enrico Scrovegni, Padua's wealthiest citizen. The Chapel illustrates the lives of Mary, her parents Anna and Joachim, and Christ.
The combination of Classical restraint and psychological insight in Giotto's frescos may be related to the contemporary revival of Classical drama (Roman theater), and the leisure time to go to them, as well a the traditional Christian mystery plays performed in front of churches. The combination of the two might explain Giotto's psychological depiction of pose and gesture. Regardless of the influences, Giotto's painting in the Arena Chapel will change the course of Italian painting forever.

Giotto di Bondone: Dem Bones!!!!! Giotto's bones (according to some folks) are going to be ceremonially re-interred under the Duomo on January 8, 2001. See these Internet sites: http://www.cnn.com/2000/STYLE/arts/11/20/italy.giottoremains.ap/index.html and Giotto was born in the northern village of Vespignano near Florence, most probably in 1266. An old legend (articulated by the 16th century artist/biographer Giorgio Vasari) says that the great Florentine painter, Giovanni Cimabue, discovered the young shepherd boy, Giotto, drawing pictures from nature on a flat rock. Recognizing talent when he saw it, Cimabue took Giotto to Florence as an apprentice and soon, Most art historians think Vasari dreamed up the shepherd/discovery part of the story. Some dispute whether Giotto was ever really Cimabue's student. What is clear is that, if Giotto was the student, he eventually surpassed the teacher. There is, however, no doubt that they both worked on the church of St. Francis in Assisi, regardless of whether there was a student-teacher relationship. The "rude manner of the Greeks", to which Vasari refers, is, of course, the brightly colored but expressionless, emotionless, perspectiveless Byzantine style of paintings and mosaics that had dominated art for at least the preceding seven hundred years. People in Giotto's works were clearly alive, able to move and to angle their heads and bodies from the characteristic straight up and full faced Byzantine pose. Most importantly, they lived in a three dimensional world: Giotto is generally credited with the re-discovery of perspective and convergence.

A Florentine painter , and founder of the Italian school of painting , b. most probably, in 1266 (not 1276), in the village of Vespignano near Florence , in the valley of the Mugello; d. at Milan , 8 Jan., 1337. Very little is known of his early history. Vasari relates that Cimabue , rambling one day in the neighborhood of Colle, saw a young shepherd lad drawing one of his sheep on a piece of smooth slate with a pointed stone, and that Cimabue thereupon took the lad with him and instructed him. The story is a pretty bit of fancy. There is no reason for believing that Giotto was ever a shepherd. It is possible that his father was a peasant; if so, he was in easy circumstances and certainly a freeholder. A document dated 1320 styles him such an epithet would not be applied to a man in straitened circumstances. As a matter of fact nothing is known of Giotto until he was thirty years old. This unfortunate gap in his personal history robs us of a story which would be of intense interest as showing the growth of his genius, and reduces us to the merest conjectures. However, without in any way detracting from
