André Derain
André Derain was French Fauvist painter and sculptor.
Derain was born in 1880 in Chateau, Île-de-France. In 1898, while studying to be an engineer, he began to attend painting classes at the Académie Camillo and studied with Eugène Carrière. In 1900, he met and shared a studio with Maurice de Vlaminck and began to paint his first landscapes. He also met Matisse.
Derain made his first impact on the Paris art scene in 1905, when he and Matisse displayed their highly innovative paintings at the Salon d'Automne. This exhibition led the critic Louis Vauxcelles to dub them les Fauves or the wild beasts. In March 1906, the noted art dealer Ambroise Vollard sent Derain to London to compose a series of paintings with the city as subject. In 30 paintings, Derain put forth a portrait of London that was radically different from anything done by previous painters of the city such as Whistler or Monet. With bold colors and compositions, Derain painted multiple pictures of the Thames and Tower Bridge. These London paintings remain among his most popular work.
In 1907 he experimented with stone sculpture and moved to Montmartre to be near his friend Pablo Picasso and other notable artists. His work increasingly showed the influence of Paul Cézanne and of African art.

Original Prints: Drypoint and Burin Engravings A Derain (1880 - 1954) was to become a major figure of fauvism, with the Salon d'Automne of 1905. His printmaking was sporadic and his technique variable, but turning to a more structured vision under the joint influence of Cezanne and African tribal art, he produced a few works that stand at the very forefront of the avant-garde of the time, such as this fine engraving, shown here in two separate states.
Quatre Baigneuses dans un Paysage
Four Bathers in a Landscape
Gilbert 36 drypoint and burin (?) engraving, circa 1908, the extremely rare 1st state (of two?), signed by the artist in pencil This remarkable working proof of Derain's most famous early engraving foreshadows Picasso's Demoiselles d'Avignon, and is a hardy exercise in the geometrical simplification of space and form.
Quatre Baigneuses dans un Paysage
Four Bathers in a Landscape
Gilbert 36 drypoint and burin (?) engraving, circa 1908, the final state (of two?), signed by the artist in pencil It is worthwhile comparing the two states of this masterful print to appreciate Derain's constructivist approach in building the composition through articulated fields of fine drypoint hatching.

Jane Lee points out in her article The Prints of Derain , Print Quarterly, VII, 1990, 1, that the style of this print is not so much influenced by Cubism as inspired by a late medieval wood carving of the Virgin and Child which Derain kept in his studio. horse called City Affair came as a shock! How did he reach? Did he jump? Posted: August 3rd, 2006 under In Passing
Comments:
The 18th century was good news for toupee manufacturers of Wigtownshire as the act of union between England and Scotland caused nationalist Scots to lose all of their hair. This sacrificial shedding came to be known as The Headland Clearances, celebrity ex-pat Sean Connery being a famous shedder. It led to the invention of the ginger wig, a now-familiar sight on the football terraces whenever Scotland are losing to some country no one has ever heard of and the jovial Scots show their superiorty over the thuggish English by laughing at their own ineptitude, rather than chucking seats around.
